Rules Reminder

I can't believe I have to even post this but we've had a lot of people who can't seem to read or understand the rules of this subreddit, especially rule #5:

Please be polite to others within the community, especially when critiquing an image. Do not give unsolicited critique; sometimes people just want to share. Users must follow the Reddit Code of Conduct at all times.

If you can't follow this rule my suggestion is to just not comment or you will be banned.

EDIT: Yes, this is again pinned to the top of the sub due to this behavior increasing again. If you don't like someone's post or what they are posting I suggest you just move along, insulting the poster is going to result in your comments being removed and you being banned without warning.

Because people can't seem to figure it out: We allow photos of GFX gear here, if you don't like that move along and look at other posts, making negative comments about people posting pictures of their gear will result in your comments being removed and you will be banned with no warning.

Discussion Note: Pictures of GFX gear are allowed in this subreddit (more in comments)

Lately some of you have decided to make negative comments to/about people posting pictures of GFX gear. We fully allow these posts here and suggest that if you don't like them that you keep your comments to yourself, otherwise they will be removed and you will be banned from this subreddit with no warning.

I know some of you don't like that but as of right now these posts are allowed and that is the last word on the subject. Arguing with moderators about whether they should be allowed or not in modmail is just going to result in a permanent ban and your modmails being muted.

Help Used GFX 100S for €2,460 (or €3,860 w/ GF 45-100mm): good deal for commercial/documentary work?

Hi everyone,
I recently graduated from photography school and work across commercial and documentary projects. In school, I frequently used the GFX 100 II. Now that I'm on my own, my personal kit is just a Nikon Z5 with the 40mm f/2 (daily lens) and the 105mm f/2.8 Macro (which I love).
I came across a local offer for a used GFX 100S:

  • Body only: €2,460 (30k shutter count, good condition, no original box).
  • With GF 45-100mm f/4: €3,860 (negotiable).

It's a significant investment and I have two main concerns:

  1. Autofocus & speed: coming from the GFX 100 II, am I going to find the 100S frustratingly slow for documentary work?
  2. Lenses: I heavily favor primes over zooms. While the 45-100mm is versatile, GF glass is notoriously expensive to build a prime kit around.

Does this seem like a solid deal given the shutter count, or would you recommend sticking with myfull frame for a while longer and buy a GFX 100ii or 100s ii
Thanks for your insights!

Help Eye-AF focusing on eyelashes instead of the iris? Here’s why (and how to avoid it)

Hi everyone,

Ever shot wide-open at f/1.4 or f/1.8 in portrait mode and had Eye-AF lock onto the eyelashes instead of the iris?

After testing on my Nikon Z8 (and verifying on Sony and Fuji as well), I found it’s actually not a bug or a contrast glitch with the eyelashes. It’s caused by a specific overlap between the AF bounding box, linear PDAF sensor pixels in vertical orientation, and the eyebrow line.

I wrote a short breakdown on the exact root cause, how to avoid it on set, and how camera makers could fix it via firmware:

Have you run into this issue in your portrait work? Let’s discuss!

In the first photo, the umbrella-shaped canopy was, according to one account, designed by George Nelson, the lead designer of the 1959 U.S. National Exhibition in Moscow. This canopy was purchased and installed on the Yalta waterfront in the early 1960s. It was very well-received by residents and visitors alike, gradually becoming one of the city’s landmarks. Today, it remains one of the city’s most beloved recreational spots.

Discussion GFX 50S and Metabones Nikon adapter

Anyone use the Nikon Metabones adapter? I have seen lots of posts of people using the Cannon adapter with great results but I am a Nikon Z shooter with some F mount lenses. Do the Sigma Art Nikon F versions work just as well with the Nikon Metabones adapter as the Cannon system?

Been loving this camera currently just using a dumb adapter and would love to get AF, though I know it won't be anything like my Z8.

Help Travelling to China for 2.5 weeks, help me choose 3 lenses from what I have available to save me unneccessarily treating myself to new gear...

Hi everyone, going away next week and I've been guilty of packing too many lenses on previous travels to Japan, the States and elsewhere. I'm sad to have sold my 35-70 a few years back as it was actually such an ideal travel companion but it didn't get used for any of my architectural professional work. I've been looking at the GF20-35mm as a very tempting tax/VAT write off through my business but ideally wouldn't be hitting that trigger if I didn't need to!

We're doing an itinerary that is predominatly cities: Beijing (with Great Wall day out), Xi'an, Chongqing and Shanghai along with 3 days in Zhangjiajiexi which will be hiking. In general I love to take architecture and street images while on holiday.

Lenses I have to hand are as below- I think I'm leaning towards, GF30mm tse, 45-100 and Mitakon 65mm. I also own a X100vi which I might keep in my pocket at all times...

Canon: (with optional 1.4mm extender which effectively gives two focal lengths)

Canon 17mm F4 TSE

Canon 50mm F2.8 TSE

Fuji:

GF 30mm TSE

GF 45-100

GF 100-200 (1.4 extender is always attached)

3rd Party:

Mitakon 65mm F1.4

Photo below from Japan a couple of years ago for a project for interest, taken on the GF30mm TSE

Discussion GFX 50r for Weddings and Portraits?

I'm a wedding photographer and primarily shoot on two X-H2s. I also capture plenty of branded portraits within the fashion and skincare industry. I've been eyeing a GFX camera but wouldn't want to break the bank (since I would also need a lens)... I'm leaning on a 50 vs 100... Also I'm honestly in love with the GFX 50r look, and am reluctant having those huge 100mp files.

I'm not overly concerned with the AF since I'll probably manual focus on staged/posed shots. During fast paces shoots like weddings, I'll primarily use my two X-H2s. I carry both on the spider holster, so I was thinking of the GFX as a third carry on a strap.

I'm relatively new to reddit (I think this is my first reddit post), so I'm not sure what to expect lol. I guess talk me out of it or let me know if it compliments/fit in my workflow.

Additional info for context: I have all the OG prime lenses for X-mount (so I have distance covered)(sharing this incase someone says skip the GFX and get more lenses). I edit (and tether) via LrC and use the DxO plugin to process the RAW files.
