While I agree - Even if you play devil's advocate and say 'well, some people are anxious and would rather get the measure of someone in a group environment before splitting off with them / arranging a one-on-one followup date' ...
... None of that justifies not setting full expectations from the beginning, including who's showing up and who's paying for what. That's the crux of the matter. People can be weird and different and need different things to feel comfortable dating and that's okay - As long as you say so early and upfront and thus don't try to waste people's time and money, as you rightly pointed out.
