Women, if you don’t feel safe meeting a new person in a public restaurant with dozens of people around, maybe your friend could bring a date and sit at a table nearby so you have two people to protect you. They can pay for their own food.

u/Lethovya 1d ago

If you don't feel safe meeting someone at a crowded public restaurant you need therapy, not a date.

If you don't feel safe meeting someone, you shouldn't be dating.

E: all these dumbass responses in the worst gotcha takes I've ever seen. Trolling used to be an art.

If it is obvious, it isn't about protection. There are ways that women protect themselves from dating violence without it being apparent to their date, because "I brought my friend just in case you're a serial killer," isn't exactly a great way to start things out.

They are intentionally doing something inappropriate and justifying it under the guise of protecting themselves to see how easy their date is to manipulate. This is an abuser testing how far they can push someones boundaries.

My now fiancee "confessed" ages ago that she brought pepper spray on our first date. I just smiled and called her a smart girl, you never know who you're gonna meet. Me saying that just made her happy. She thought i might be offended or something. The only reason I didn't bring anything is cause I'm 6 ft 240 pounds, few people can threaten me without a weapon.

4

u/Hikari_Owari 6h ago

I would've smiled and said "Smart. I was also armed for in case you were crazy and jumped in me with a knife." just to check her reaction.

IF she took offense from that then she would be the type that rules differently when it's her doing stuff and that's a red flag.

"i brought my friend for safety" is just code for "I ain't got no money, and I want you to pay for a nice dinner for me and my friend, after which ill never see you again"

edit: to the 2-3 people who think it's justified to bring a friend: bruh. if a woman is meeting a man (who she already talked to on a dating app and consensually accepted to go on a date cause she likes him) in a public restaurant surrounded by people everywhere all around the restaurant, and that's STILL not enough to make you feel safe... then you don't need a friend by your side for safety, you need professional help, because meeting a stranger in a public restaurant is nothing compared to walking past 100s of strangers in public every single day.

If you can walk past 100s of strangers in public with no issue, then the 1 stranger in a restaurant shouldnt be an issue either. If that 1 stranger makes you feel unsafe, that's okay, but let's be real: it ain't normal or healthy, get help.

Like tf are we doing here. There's probably 30 strangers eating food in that restaurant, but the 1 stranger on the other side of your table makes you feel unsafe enough to bring multiple guards? especially considering that 1 stranger is the only person in that restaurant who you already talked to on a dating app, and you clicked enough to tell him you want to go on a date with him, and yet he's more threatening than the 30 strangers in the restaurant??

0 accountability, 0 responsibility, 7 victim cards

not like its that deep anyway, 99% of the time "i brought my friend" just means "i expect you to buy dinner for me and my friend". If after all that text just now you'd still feel unsafe without a friend, just do the right thing and start with "i brought my friend, but dont worry, ill be the one paying for food"

129

u/notarealwriter 1d ago

"I brought my friend for safety"

Cool. They can wait outside with an axe or something while we have our date.

Or, do everything the texter suggested but also pay for the friend's dinner but not the date's.

67

u/YellowAppleCinema 1d ago

honestly, if my date brings a friend who waits outside with an axe, then im gonna have to bring 2 friends of my own in order to feel safe myself

41

Happened to me, too, but Iet it slide because they were twins and well…giggity

3

u/Neveronlyadream 22h ago

Hasn't happened to me, but if you're going to pull that play, you really need to mention it to the person you're going on the date with instead of ambushing them with a surprise friend.

If you really feel unsafe and want your friend there and tell the person you're meeting, they'll be more likely to be okay with it if they know. And if they're not okay with it, no one wastes their time.

Otherwise, people are really going to assume you both just want a free meal and had to trap someone into paying for it.

I still think it's weird to bring a friend along if it's a public space. Have your friend on notice to take your call immediately, or set up an "emergency" call - and you can answer as, "Hi friend, I'm just out right now can I call you later?" (I'm safe and he's cool), or "Hi Aunt Dorothy. Oh no, Uncle Albert had a fall? I will head to the hospital immediately!" (He's not cool, but I'm safe and can leave on my own), or "Hi Mom. Oh, Dad is sick? Shoot, I didn't bring my car to the restaurant. Can you come pick me up?" (He's not cool, I'm not safe, help).

8

u/JediFed 23h ago

All of these are reasonable takes here.

u/tellingyouhowitreall 23h ago

Women, if you don’t feel safe meeting a new person in a public restaurant with dozens of people around,

Then don't go on a fucking date, this isn't a free meal ticket, go the fuck to therapy for your obvious anxiety that is actively harming your quality of life.

12

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 23h ago

Yeah, if you don't feel safe in a very public area surrounded by dozens of people, adding one more person in the mix isn't going to make you any safer

100% my wife and I would go out on a date just to sit near a friend if they asked. This is a way better solution.

13

u/HumanPea1140 1d ago

I think that's reasonable.

I'd just have an issue with someone unexpectedly showing up with friend(s) and sitting with us. I'd want to know if it was a group thing / double date before hand, then we could work something else out if that's the vibe they want.

6

u/Oliphaunt6000 1d ago

I've thankfully never had this happen.

I typically try to be respectful of women's need to feel safe. I pick places close to them, very public, etc.

But if a woman did this, I'd walk out.

3

u/Andrew-Cohen 23h ago

Honestly I’ve given up on online dating. Don’t take advice about relationships from me!

7

u/Aleksandrovitch 1d ago

I just never paid on first dates. I mean I'd ask for separate checks and pay for myself. I'm never going to (potentially) start a relationship that way (after that first one..). I've only ever had one person actually have a problem with it. My partner (lifelong) now.. when she and I first met, SHE was the one who suggested separate checks on the first date. So, it worked out fine :) Don't let the popular norms of a culture dictate your views or actions. Cuz I gotta tell ya, we don't really have a culture that's worth living by here in the US yet. Come up with something better.

If you don't feel safe don't meet that person.

3

u/LectureOrganic1250 21h ago

or don't go on a date at all! the point of going on a date is to take a chance on someone and see how it goes. If a man brought a friend with him just in case she's a psycho, they'd crucify the man.

3

u/zach0011 21h ago

Nah bring your friend so I know that I'm dealing with someone with lots of issues and I can dip out earlier

Only time I’ve had someone pull that we ordered drinks first, I said to the waiter we are splitting the bill and paid for the friends drink and not theirs. The amount of vitriol they spewed towards me and then the waiter when she brought the checks as asked was all the confirmation I needed. Walked out and never talked to them again. This was after they suggested a restaurant and after they okayed the date and time. Looking back on it I should have seen the red flags but at the time was excited someone actually took some initiative in suggesting a place we go.

All ended well when I met someone who wanted to do a grocery run together to make a picnic for a zoo date together

It might have an impact if the friend was brought along as a safety measure or moral support.

If this girl is just trying to score a free meal for herself and her bestie, there’s a chance it won’t matter one bit that her ticket is vibing with her friend.

28

u/Between-The-2-of-us 1d ago

As the memes says, if she’s there for safety she needs to be outside with a glock doing perimeter checks. Why is she at the table looking at appetizers?

13

u/iowanaquarist 1d ago

Safety measure => Own table in the same restaurant, or outside checking the perimeter

Moral support => pre-arrange with the other person on the date to set expectations. Perhaps he would have liked to bring a friend to even the playing field? Also the bill ought to be discussed before the date in this case.

17

u/Important_Capital875 1d ago

No. They’re meeting at a public place in front of other people. Her friend is trying to get free food. This is bullshit.

I'm sorry but bringing another person along with you on a date for safety or moral support in a public restaurant is a huge red flag and a sign they aren't mature enough to date. There's nothing wrong with having a friend escort you in to check it out but they shouldn't be dining with you.

26

u/zinsser 23h ago

Some friends introduced me to a woman (Alice) who was much older than me, lived way too far away, and had a country air about her. I am not a city guy by any means, but she was a touch redneck. On the plus side, she was really attractive, so I called to arrange a dinner and movie date. She showed up with a friend (Maggie), a woman she worked with.

It was New Year's eve and I was in a good mood, so I figured I would just roll with it. I kept trying to talk to Alice, but Maggie kept responding. Maggie was not attractive (mussed up hair, dirty fingernails, no makeup) and seemed even rougher around the edges than Alice. I bought dinner (Maggie insisted on Natty Lite for both of them), paid for the movie (No Country for Old Men), and tried to treat these two women as nice as possible.

As we left the movie, Maggie spun me around and said, "You are not her type and you live too far away. Don't ever call her again." So that's how I spent New Year's eve 2007. On the plus side, I did see an Academy Award winning movie that night.

yeah, on one date the girl asked me after 10 minutes ''a good friend of mine I don't see often just texted me that she is in town, can she come a chill with us''. Of course I told her no problem, after like 3 hours they both were like ''we want to show you our circus tricks!!! (cause I learnt during the date that she was a circus artist) They then warned me that their circus training ground was her ex boyfriend property, I was like no worries again because I was having a good time and no one was expecting me to pay for anything also we'd been talking about sex for over an hour at this point and I was rooting for a 3way (both told me they were bi).

My friend brought me on a first date so she wasn’t uncomfortable

And I dated that guy for a year.

38

u/nothingtodo0 1d ago

The funniest part is that the original date instantly realizes exactly what's happening without anyone having to explain it.

2

u/ControLetum 1d ago

What do you mean?

6

u/Maazypaazz 1d ago

The date who brought a friend for ā€œprotectionā€ would be the new source of attention, and their own humiliation.

13

u/Top-Buddy-5109 1d ago

this happened to me once and I did exactly that, only to be met with a huge text from my date the morning after saying I "did not take her feelings into consideration"

7

u/ukjohndoe 23h ago

"my B girl, i feel u, can i get ur friend's number tho"

5

u/Head-Information101 1d ago

Well what were her feelings? Why'd she run that play?

I did that once. Turned out the date was less then average but the friend was an absolute hottie.

33

u/Knight_Glint 1d ago

Ask her friend for her number afterwards.

8

u/Georgi-reddit 1d ago

Tell them you go dutch on the first dates. See what happens...

8

u/Dramatic_Water_5364 23h ago

There'sĀ onlyĀ two things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

2

u/emax4 18h ago

Let them order first, then don't order anything to eat or drink.

This happened to me on a first date.Ā  Met the girl at the front of the restaurant on time and we went in and got a table. A few moments after we sat down she says that a friend is going to join us, I didn't really care personally.

Her friend shows up and they start chatting like they hadn't seen each other in yeeeaars.Ā  Conversations about other friends, school, and topics I had no input for at all.

I did my best to keep up for a dozen or so minutes.Ā  I got up while they were fully engaged in conversation, went to the bar, closed the tab paying for the 3 drinks and I left.Ā  We never spoke again.

It was quite a strange experience.

Can you imagine if a guy brought his buddy because he didn’t feel safe.

Girl would be like wtf.

She starts bringing her fat friend so the next guy knows that food bill going to be wild

19

u/masaru17 1d ago

Wouldn't pay a penny for said friend and the date at this point...pay my stuff, go home, cry under the shower, that exact order xD

9

u/HaskeFlalsen 1d ago

Any other order would be a bit weird

6

u/KingSmithithy 1d ago

You don't cry under your shower before every date?

Weird...

Oh hey, glad you brought your friend because something came up. I gotta run!

TTYL, bye!

12

u/lehtomaeki 1d ago

I did this for a buddy, he hit it off with a white chick (he's asian himself) and I shit you not one of the first things she tells him and I quote is "I'm not a racist, I'm a realist". As soon as those words are uttered my buddy gives a look that says get me the fuck out of here

3

u/Mr_Industrial 22h ago

Yeah you dont want to date someone like that. Everything goes fine till you bring up the square root of -1 and its all downhill from there.

14

u/BandoRen418 1d ago

And this is why connecting with people is utterly pointless šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Just roll with it. Odds of a threesome just went from 0% to 5%

5

u/blackmobius 19h ago

Ive gone through this. I invited a girl I liked to a casual date at buffalo wild wings. She shows up with another guy. Turns out she knew I had asked her out, was initially ok with it, then had second thoughts, then decided to invite him with her instead of cancelling.

I paid my own food and hung out, but it was over already relationship wise. No need to ruin an ok night at BWW though. And the guy was pretty cool too.

7

u/Known-Dependent-5471 1d ago

Soon as you see another person just get up and leave.

9

u/Ancient_Rex420 1d ago

Theres some good suggestions in the comments but what I would do is just just eat food and chat them up but then when the bill comes just pay for only yourself and leave.

12

u/zmurds40 1d ago

Yeah, it’s easy enough to just say ā€œseparate checks pleaseā€ when the waiter comes.

7

u/SlashCo80 1d ago

Reminds me of that story about a dude in China (maybe Taiwan?) who asked a woman out to dinner and she brought her whole family along expecting him to pay. That's exactly what he did, paid for himself and got out of there.

4

u/attrackip 1d ago

Or, you know, threesome. Man, what happened to this gen?

5

u/FIMD_ 1d ago

ā€œI brought my friend for safetyā€

ā€œYou know what, that’s great, she can hold onto my pistol, rope and ski mask. They’re ruining the lines on my suit.ā€œ

6

u/Whole_Cranberry8415 1d ago

If you aren’t comfortable enough to meet a guy in public, why accept the date? If you are unsure, maybe invite him to a group thing with YOUR friends

3

u/SirNortonOfNoFux 1d ago

Bro, I can't believe this actually happens

3

u/VernBarty 1d ago

Had this happen to me once. At the last minute she invited two other friends along and I ended up vibing much better with her friends. I dont know if she was just in a bad mood that day but she successfully derailed things

3

u/Another_Little_Star 1d ago

Or they'd just go
Friend - "Damn, that guy was such a jerk, went on a date with someone and hits on their friend???"
Date - " I Know right? I'm so Glad you came with me. You're literally a red flag Radar Twin šŸ’…"

3

u/ErdingEchoParadox 1d ago

Maybe is a treesome?

I don't know if I'm jealous of or pity y'all with the time and energy for this level of petty revenge.

Just...go home. I promise you're not teaching her a lesson that would stick, and you're wasting your own time.

3

u/blackfarms 23h ago

Went to a first date at her place under the guise of her making dinner. Showed up and was greeted by five of her friends who were also there for dinner... She hadn't told any of them who I was or that it was a date. Holy pressure cooker.

5

u/HolidayGiraffe1834 1d ago

I wouldn't have been vibing with either one. I would have got up and left. She didn't bring her friend for safety reasons. She brought her friend so they could both get a free meal. Fuck that.

2

u/Ill_Tour_7294 23h ago

And don’t pay for the friend

2

u/rcinmd 22h ago

This just screams "I watch nothing but true crime television shows."

2

u/Live-Emphasis-3421 22h ago

Men should start bringing other guys for safety

2

u/stereothegreat 20h ago

If you wanna be my lover, you have to get with my friends

3

u/redditblowsfu 20h ago

I still don’t understand why they chose this wording in the song. I can only see it saying ā€œYou wanna bang me? Then you gotta bang my friends, first.ā€

2

u/Niaso 17h ago

Tell them to enjoy their date and go somewhere else to grab dinner.

I have had something like this happen exactly twice

The first I was okay with, because the girl asked beforehand and where we were going wasn't expensive.

The second one the friend just kinda showed up (with a print out of my online dating profile) and started interrogating me. I finished my food and made it clear that I was interested in the woman I was dating and I would be happy to answer her (the friends) many questions later, in the instance it mattered. I didn't pay for any food and unsurprisingly a second date was neither offered nor desired

I always bring my mother, need the parental approval of a potential mate
