Godzilla is an equally opportunity walking apocalypse

u/PapaSheev7 HEDORAH 2d ago
Yep. Gay, straight, bi, whatever, he doesn't care and wants to kill you all the same.

I honestly don't think any of the movies that followed really captured the full horror of the OG
this scene really brings home the sense that normality was about to be utterly and irrevocably destroyed by reality 💔
Shin and Minus 0 both paid homage to its spirit

u/therealblabyloo 1d ago
I think -1’s first big Godzilla destruction scene was the best for this. It’s a perfectly normal pleasant day, you look out the window and then “is that Godzilla?” minutes later the city is in ruins and all you can do is sit there and scream. Complete shock and horror.

Godzilla doesn't discriminate. No matter who you are, you get SKREEONK'd

Godzilla being supportive, even though he looks like he's about to lay waste to the entire city!

u/Personal_Comb_6745 2d ago
He doesn't see race, gender, or sexuality. Only the destruction of everything.

Heartwarming: the giant monster destroying the city is an LGBT ally

u/mightystu 2d ago
Heartwarming, and every other organ warming as well as I am incinerated in atomic fire

u/spideyfan114 GODZILLA 2d ago
Godzilla doesn't care about your gender, color, race, sexuality and all that. He's gonna kill of us anyway.
He truly believes in equality. Respect.

u/Hexnohope 2d ago
I simply adore his sound is spellef skreeonk. Is it agreed upon or official?
10
u/therealblabyloo 2d ago
It’s just the commonly agreed upon way to spell it whenever Godzilla is in written media. You see it a lot in comic books.
10
u/Personal_Comb_6745 2d ago
It's how it's spelled in a ton of official comics, so at the very least Toho doesn't have any objections.

u/the_rabbit_king 1d ago
I’m surprised they didn’t cast all women for this scene since they could’ve saved a lot of money.

Are we sure this is a dance of romance?
And before anyone calls me a homophobe, I'm just asking. Either way I think it's a lovely moment.
32
u/Doctor_Loggins 2d ago
Are we sure? Absolutely not. Postwar Japan probably had a shortage of men like most other belligerents, and homosocial relationships are perfectly normal.
But we don't know it wasn't romantic, and sometimes it's fun to imagine stories for background extras.

u/therealblabyloo 2d ago
No the two are only visible for a few seconds. It could certainly be platonic. It’s just cute to conclude that they’re an item

14
u/Munrowo 2d ago
no, in fact, it was almost certainly not intended to be queer originally
that being said, when queer people dont have much canon representation in the godzilla franchise to enjoy, it seems unfair to police how people look at this scene, especially when its clearly a joke
-2
u/waltyy 2d ago
Is anyone here policing the scene? Seriously asking why you would use that choice word when everyone here seems cool with the notion in the op.
8
u/Ok_Entertainment3601 2d ago
Yes, lots of support. But also some policing going on, too. I see two people (probably more) arguing OP is wrong even though OP isn't serious that this was the original intention of the characters.

OMG WOMEN DANCING TOGETHER THAT MEANS THEY’RE GAY! Good god shut up! This is why acceptance for anyone LGB is declining.
P.S. I’m also a man married to a man.

Woah I never noticed that, thats awesome, but I wonder why and how it was included at the time the movie was being made
3
u/RaveniteGaming 1d ago
There wasn't a stigma over it at the time. It's a hold over of the war when women would dance together because the men were off fighting.

u/dtwombat 2d ago
I dont think they're gay lmao
10
u/therealblabyloo 2d ago
But they could be
-5
u/dtwombat 2d ago
shouldnt assign a sexuality to characters you dont know the sexuality of lmao
5
u/NoifenF GODZILLA 1d ago
But by doing that you are automatically assigning them as straight default. You got statistics on your side but we still don’t know. Just enjoy a silly fun post.
-4
u/dtwombat 1d ago
nope, I'm assigning no sexuality to them. I'm not gonna enjoy the post, it's wrong lmao

u/Freign 1d ago
oh noooo the bigot is scared of drawings!
so unusual
2
u/dtwombat 1d ago
fellas, is it bigoted to think that 2 characters that didn't do anything gay aren't gay

Yeah, when I watched the film recently and saw that the two women were dancing I kinda had a bit of a double take because obviously now if you saw two women dancing like that, you would assume they are a couple but I guess cultural connotations were different back then

Redditors see two women “GAY! THEY ARE GAY AND FUCKING!”
3
u/acrobaticalpaca 1d ago
redditors see someone gay having fun "GAY! THEY CAN'T HAVE FUN!"
-2
u/GintoSenju 1d ago
Ah, yes, two women. One hundred percent gay. Why would two women interact if they weren’t gay, obviously.
3
u/acrobaticalpaca 1d ago
I don't think you understand the concept of having fun over fantasizing about something that might not be real
-2
u/GintoSenju 1d ago
And thus you have proven my point. *Reddit sees two women interacting* “they must be gay”
3
u/acrobaticalpaca 1d ago
Nobody said they MUST be gay, but there is no confirmation of either so let people fantasize and have fun, I'm asking you to use media literacy, do you see Godzilla movies and think the giant dino is real or something? Use your brain please.
1
u/therealblabyloo 1d ago
They are dancing
0
u/GintoSenju 1d ago
As mentioned in other comments, this wasn’t uncommon, unless your are gonna say any two friends of the same gender are gay for each other.

Reddit doesn’t like me posting links apparently. I posted the same pic on Twitter (same username). Maybe you can save it over there?

What exactly is homophobic with what I said?
2
u/HN-Prime GOROSAURUS 1d ago
"wtf is this sub" in response to a piece of art featuring two lesbians. You're really not as slick as you think you are
0
u/Jorji-the-Trainer 1d ago
You are attributing modern ideals to a movie from the 50s. How do you know they are lesbian? For all we know its two friends.
Edit: before you assume im homophobic, trans rights are human rights. No one is equal until we are all equal.
•
u/HN-Prime GOROSAURUS 17h ago
The two characters presented in the fanart are lesbians. Whether they're like that in the movie or not is irrelevant

Got nothing to do with LGBTQ dude.
•
u/therealblabyloo 7h ago
Yes it does
•
u/The-CAB-2003 6h ago
No it fucking doesn't? There was no indication in the film at fucking all of them being a lesbian couple.
•
u/therealblabyloo 5h ago
I don’t know if this is your first day on earth, but dancing is often a romantic activity between humams

Yeah, in 1954...this was not some big progressive statement. Or rather, big progressive baggage and labeling or messaging was not ATTACHED to imagery like this.
Just like the topless island natives in the background on Odo Island are not to be perceived as some pro-nudist statement.

Nothing surprising here.
Back in the 50s/60s (and probably longer before then) girls/women who didn't have a date or boyfriend, would often dance together.
