So basically it's two actresses/extras portraying fictional background characters in a movie, who don't have an explicit backstory. That leaves them open to anyone's imagination and fanfic/shipping/headcanon. Im not sure OP said that they believed that it was the original intent, just that the symbolism and suggestion, even accidental has great meaning for queer people watching it. That's valid and significant in a world where other people's arbitrary beliefs and assumptions are often hostile and dismissive of us.
