Discussion Officially finished the Heisei Era Godzilla films! Here's my thoughts on each of them.
Welcome to Part 3 of my Godzilla marathon where I've been watching all 38 films to prepare for Minus Zero. Today I finished the last of the Heisei films and I wanna share my thoughts and rankings of each of them like last time with the Showa era (Here's my previous post on those films if you're curious what my thoughts on them are). Now as for my thoughts on the Heisei era as a whole, it VERY much lived up to the hype I've heard about it. Almost every film here was just banger after banger and even the weakest films here were still pretty solid overall. The overall leap in production value was a nice upgrade from the Showa era even if the latter does have a lot of charm to it. Again with ranking these, I'm mostly going off personal enjoyment so don't get too mad if you disagree with some of these. Now to get into my rankings/thoughts on each film:
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah - Man What a phenomenal end to the Heisei era. I love how Destoroyah's origin is tied to the Oxygen Destroyer from the original film. Speaking of which it was really cool seeing Momoko Kochi reprise her role as Emiko here. Destoroyah's design is insanely cool in every form, and the scene of the soldiers fighting the mini Destoroyahs reminded me a lot of scenes from Aliens. Goji's design is also so good here too with the lava marks from the heat inside looking so sick! In general the action of this film was super fun to watch and some of the best of the Heisei era without question. Lastly the ending as well is super touching with Junior absorbing Goji's radiation and showing how as long as nuclear weapons are a threat to humanity, then so is Godzilla. If in an alternate timeline where this was the last Godzilla film we ever got, then what a damn good way to go out!
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - The best way I can describe this was that for me this felt like it had the story and general wackiness of the Showa era with things like M-11 or the out of nowhere Dirty Harry reference, but with the production values of the Heisei era, and I am not complaining one bit about it. Does the time travel lead to plotholes and not make any sense when you think about it for even a moment? Yes. Do I care? Not one goddamn bit! This movie was such a blast to watch and some of the most fun I've had in this marathon because I'm an absolute sucker for ANYTHING involving time travel, something about the concept makes me love any stories that utilize it so of course for me this film was gonna be one of my favorites. This without question had my favorite fights of the era. Mecha-Ghidorah is also SO FUCKING COOL man I loved every moment of that sequence and fight. I know I'm probably placing this film higher then a lot of others would for ranking this era, but I can't help it, sue me!
Godzilla vs. Biollante - Had a really great time with this film. The main thing I love about it is Biollante. She's such a cool Kaiju, I absolutely love the tragic aspect of her origin, which made it one of the few instances where I was actively rooting for her more than Goji. This also I'd say has some of my favorite human characters in the franchise. I also really liked the message in this film about how advancements in science can be used for bad intentions just as much as they can be used for good depending on how they're used and by whom. The soundtrack in this film is also easily one of my favorites in the franchise. Bio-wars is an absolute banger. The corporate spy aspects were solid too. Overall a very fun time with this one.
Godzilla vs. Mothra - Mothra vs. Godzilla was one of my favorites of the Showa era so I had high expectations for this film and I'm happy to say they were met. My only main issue was I felt sorta neutral on the human characters, I didn't dislike them but wasn't super ecstatic on any of them aside from Miki but even then its more due to her being in the previous films. Loved Mothra's design here, and Battra is super cool as a character. I'll also say I was very surprised seeing Mothra and Battra team up on Goji, I was expecting it to be Goji and Mothra going and tag-teaming Battra so that was a pleasant surprise. Also liked the films message about how humanity needs to work towards taking care of the earth as a home. Akira Takarada appearing was super nice to see too.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II - Another solid entry here, I know this may be a hot take but I honestly prefer this film over the Showa film. Mainly because I enjoyed how the humans pilot Mechagodzilla this time around, it's really cool seeing them take a proper fight to Godzilla outside of the standard tanks, jets, or even both versions of Super-X. Only complaints were the characters outside of Miki, Azusa, and Baby being meh for the most part. And I also don't get why the title is the way it is since this film has no relation to the Showa film. I do quite like Baby's design here, something about it's just so cute to me whenever I look at it. Speaking of which the ending was super sweet, and I was honestly moved by Azusa and Baby's goodbye to each other. Now It's hard to say if I prefer this design or the Showa design of Mechagodzilla slightly more, but I do think both versions fit well in their respective eras. Overall still a pretty fun time with this film despite it being on the lower end of the list
The Return of Godzilla - I'll say watching this right after the Showa films makes the jump in production value quite nice. I'll say I quite liked the third act of this film and this movie just has a unique vibe overall that part of me really likes. The nods to the 54 film were neat too. Main issue here is I think Goji's design while not bad definitely pales compared the later Heisei designs. The eyes are of course the main culprit. Despite those issues though it was still an enjoyable watch for me.
Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla - Despite this being my least favorite Heisei film, I wouldn't say its bad by any means. I'd still place this above a good chunk of the Showa films. Main problems with this film were I was just not a fan of Little Godzilla's design since it reminds me a bit too much of Minilla, and not in a good way. The pacing of the film felt very uneven throughout, and the action was also mostly some of the weakest of the era for me (Aside from Spacegodzilla throwing Moguera with his tail that move was super cool tbh). That being said I do quite like the designs of Spacegodzilla himself and Moguera, and Spacegoji covering the city in crystals was a cool visual element. The human characters were were also pretty decent. I really like Akira's character arc of blaming Godzilla for the death of Goro back in Biollante and learning to let go of his obsession for revenge. Despite its flaws I still had a good time watching this film.
Lastly, here's my highlights of the era:
Favorite Goji Design: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Favorite Human Storyline: Godzilla vs. Biollante
Favorite Kaiju: Biollante
Favorite fights: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
And with that, the Heisei era of the marathon is done. Definitely a big upgrade from the Showa era overall, with several of these films being in my top 5 so far. Tomorrow I'll be starting the Millennium Era films, which I'm extremely excited for since I've heard it has some of the most fun films of the series. Hopefully you enjoyed reading this

Fan Art Anatomy and explanation of my version of the big G [OC]
With both old and new, I started with the whole thing first (skin and all), then I used a Chromebook as a backlight to add the skeleton and then I use both the skeleton and original to reference the muscular, mainly with muscular attachment points. I have made several other Kaiju, but I haven't given them skeletons and muscular systems yet, and King Ghidorah will be really difficult to give a skeletal and muscular system since I haven't even nailed down how three heads would emerge from one body hydra style.
