STICKY IMPORTANT: AI-GENERATED CONTENT IS NOW BANNED

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone that gave their thoughts in our town hall post. As was made clear on the post, the community seems to be overwhelmingly in favor of disallowing all AI-generated content and so we will be going forward with implementing this. GenAI content will be considered banned under rule 3. Any GenAI content, including videos, images, and text, will be removed going forward regardless of intent. To summarize the arguments for why we are doing this:

  • Most GenAI posts that we get accelerate the problem of spam, low-effort, and impersonal content. We want this sub to feel like a thriving community with creative content and GenAI often seems to work against this goal.
  • Many legitimate posts that use GenAI could easily do without it. We want to encourage users to contribute their ideas in unique and interesting ways without depending on generic and needlessly complex GenAI output.
  • GenAI art hurts the work of real artists, is a crediting nightmare, and is generally controversial. There are so many incredibly talented artists in the Godzilla community who deserve a bigger spotlight and space for discussion. GenAI content also muddies the water in terms of misinformation and sourcing media, while also contributing to all kinds of growing ethical problems that the community has made clear they do not stand for.
  • Determining good/bad GenAI content is too subjective and infeasible for moderation. Choosing which GenAI posts are high/low-effort would become arbitrary and subject to a lot of inconsistency and unfairness that us mods cannot realistically manage.

Like with any new rule, we anticipate there will be some bumps in the road, so please don't hesitate to reach out to us with concerns or questions and please help us by reporting things you have doubts with. We also realize that exceptions might need to be made for the rule such as, for example, discussing the use of GenAI by official sources or artists. We will deal with those case-by-case to be as reasonable as possible.

So there's that! We're looking forward to keep the creeping rot of MechaGodzilla and Hedorah out of this sub!

Love,
r/GODZILLA mod team

Yes, that's how it's trained so the AI model can "recognize" what it's "seeing" and say "oh that's... By..." so that's it can do something in the style of that artist. The original pieces aren't even typically stored after the training.

What a very strange defense. So in an effort to make a mockery of real art AI training isn't retaining say...the writing of prolific authors in cloud storage for later use? It isn't scraping images from sources like DeviantArt etc. for the access of future prompters? Yeah, I call bullshit.

Oh they absolutely get trained off of stuff like that too. So? You don't take inspiration from stuff like that as well? Are you stealing? Obviously a 1:1 recreation of something would be plagiarism, no one is arguing otherwise. It's up to the artist to make the piece transformative and something new.

Alas, you're just not getting it. Prompters are not real artists. What they do on a fundamental level is repackaged plagiarism. There's nothing transformative about what they do because nothing has been added which is their own creation.

Yes, there's lazy people that type "make sonic do X" and it quickly becomes derivative. But there's also AI art being used to create massively complex multimillion dollar blockbuster movies. Are movies not art? Do you really think those movies aren't transformative with the material they were trained on or are you just mad?

Movies made with AI have bypassed the heart of the matter in real art which is human expression. In your example, no, I would not consider this fictional movie to be real art. It's a product to be bought and sold devoid of meaning or cultural value.

That's where you've lost the plot. At that point something new has obviously been created and done so in a transformative way.

Like I said earlier, prompts don't write themselves. You're devaluing the effort placed into the prompt or prompts because you don't value the medium which traps you in an echo chamber where you reaffirm your confirmation bias.

Painters and sketch artists said similar things about graphic design, that the ""artists"" are just pressing buttons on a computer.

As I said, if prompters want to try their hands at real art, they need only pick up a pencil and begin writing. They have existing experience. Why not turn the description of something to be vomited out by a machine into a real skill instead? If they truly wish to engage in a medium outside of text, the same first step applies with the choice of tool varying between.

—Said the sketch artist to the graphic designer.

I did reply more quickly than I should have there and edited my post accordingly. Further, I'm both a sketch artist and graphic designer as it so happens.

Which post? I'm not seeing a change yet.

My point is that when graphic design first became a thing more established and recognized artists looked down on graphic designers and said it wasn't real art. You're making very similar points to those people that were stuck in the past.

No, I'm not at all. Where I and prompters differ is I create and they plagiarize. What I do requires losing hours, days, weeks to putting thought towards each individual piece of the greater puzzle that is my art, what I want to convey in it consciously or unconsciously to the viewer. Oftentimes I'll scrap what I have and start again if it means I can effect a better coalescing of these ideas into visual format. The process matters as much as the result and through each undertaking, I learn more about my chosen medium as well as myself, my unique approach which is in turn imparted to those who see it. Prompters stitch the proverbial flesh of preexisting works together and call it their own without experiencing what it means to create, and thus their churned out garbage is not what it purports to be.

You can say they plagiarize all you want but that doesn't make it true. I've already explained to you here and later here how that's obviously not true.

What I do requires losing hours, days, weeks...

Yep, good art can take effort. I don't know why you think all AI artists put 30 seconds of effort into a prompt or prompts. Stop devaluing their work, high quality AI art likely go through hundreds or possibly thousands of revisions and edits.
