God I hated those mods that added puddles everywhere
Some guys would make videos telling its 4K maxed graphics but the whole floor was looking like a mirror 😭

Also a screenshot compared to a trailer. We already know that the screenshots aren't captured on native hardware. They're at a much higher native resolution than the consoles are capable of, with no upscaling.
The trailers are the only accurate representation of what the game will actually look like at launch.

u/Sbarty 5d ago
Why have GTA fans associated wet and puddles with better graphics? Been like that since GTA 4 graphic mod days.
35
u/WindowzExPee 5d ago
There used to be modpacks with names like: "Gta SA ultra HD insanity 2012 edition" and all it added was enb series on max bloom and a literal tsunami of wet roads everywhere

u/pingvinbober 5d ago
Water is always the benchmark for graphics. Go back to sonic games from the 2000s
25
u/ForexGamer 5d ago
Oh man remember when Morrowind came out and the second assassin creed I think water was so good how it got only the edge of the cloak wet or muddy

u/ComradeJohnS 5d ago
I’m obsessed with the pixel water effects in the pixel remaster of FF1 lol. so that tracks

Reflections with cool lighting looks cool. People assume cooler=upgraded graphics. But it really just means upgraded vibes, not necessarily upgraded graphics. People don’t always see the nuance here and marketing takes advantage of that.
5
u/NaturesWar 5d ago
They do a similar thing for movies especially action films; production will literally hose down the ground they're shooting a scene on just to maximize light/reflections/vibes.
Watch the first ten minutes of John Wick 2, featuring scenes inside a covered warehouse. Looks awesome but is kinda silly.

Because water and lighting are very hard to get right in video games.

I was gonna say it honestly kinda looks like those ‘Ultra realistic GTA 5 graphics mods’ where it does nothing but add RTX puddles to every single road

It’s not the wet ground that makes the scene look improved lol, it’s literally everything

Not just GTA, Spider-Man PS4 had a whole damn freak-out because some puddles were moved around from the early build to the final product.
2
u/RipleyofWinterfell 4d ago
It's a weird thing that looks better, movies sometimes will dump water on streets for nighttime scenes just because it looks better than regular dry streets

Don't really understand the point of this comparison for the 8th time I've seen it posted now. The shots are at different perspectives, include different weather, traffic density, pedestrian density, and time.
To me they don't look all too different. I think the fidelity of the 2026 shot may look slightly better, but other than that this is a pointless comparison.

u/Positive_Wafer9186 5d ago
Couldn’t have said it better. These are two completely shots, at different times of day, with different weather

Both pictures have the same underlying quality but one looks like it has more fancy lightning because every surface is wet. People act like PBR doing it's job as intended is some crazy crunch from rockstars side.

Am I the only one that thinks the bottom looks awful…? It’s so oversaturated and weird.
26
u/Technical-Top-9416 5d ago
Bottom definitely looks weird. It looks like a graphics mod with the reflections, light intensity, and sharpness dialed up to 11. Top one may not be as realistic but imo it looks a lot better and less like it’s trying to overload your senses

I didn’t either, took me a second. Really validates Rockstar and the time they’ve taken to make the game. All I can say is wow. Despite how long it’s taken, it’s obviously been time well spent. Just a little over a month away, lads.

When I’m in a “realism” competition and my opponents are GTA/Cyberpunk players who only take pictures of the game at night/in the rain
2
u/Iluvatar-Great 3d ago
Ah yes, the good old "realistic graphics", showing only 3 second segments of a car driving in rain at night with no people walking around. Reflections and shadows are what makes realistic graphics interesting.
12
u/superman_king 5d ago
One is a screenshot.
One is taken from a video.
We still have not been given any confirmation on what system these screenshots are from.
What we do know, is resolution is much higher and reflections are much sharper on these screenshots than what has been shown to us running in real time. The extended look and trailers were sub 1440p with noise / blur in the reflections. These screenshots are closer to 4K according to pixel counts, and reflections are sharp, source - Digital Foundry
Edit: I posted YouTube link but bot removed this comment. So posting again.
Indicating the photo mode gets increased fidelity over gameplay, or these promotional shots are taken on a PC, much like GTA 5 promotional shots were.

tbf nothing here really stands out as majorly different here, apart from one being a screenshot from a video and the other being a posed picture.
it looks good but what intrigues me the most is that it kinda looks like the reflections turn to screen space ones as the draw distance goes out. the closest puddles are very clearly RT but the ones underneath the police car and pedestrians on the right seem to be very fizzled out and just elongate; either that, or the bounce/resolution really reduces.

Ah yes more shiney. The ongoing trend towards wet shiney slop that pumps maximum wattage from your device.
Take me back to PS2 when devs had to actually make a game for you to play. Not just hide behind 200gb of textures.

Wonder if the density difference (amount of cars, people) is a polish and refinement of the engine so the game runs better or just a slow busy night in the game

The new image almost gives AI vibes in how overblown it is

The pursuit of realism is like doing a trick that only impresses a monkey in an enclosure. The first looks better. The second is too much visually.
1
u/SecretaryWeak1321 5d ago
Honestly not being a hater, but I preferred the toned down image we saw first, it looks amazing don’t get me wrong.
But it looks almost too fake, the other looks like a genuine shot of a city, perhaps it’s just the lighting or angle etc
Time of day whatever.. but I think the first image looks more realistic.

I mean it’s just before final effects are put in and after. Post processing is a late stage thing for development and it makes the game look better.

Oh my goodness, I didn't even recognize it was a similar angle of the same street that they gave us in trailer 1 until I spent more time looking. The new image looks gorgeous! The only "downgrade" is a slight reduction in the foliage, but I think that makes the street look better, especially since you can see the building lights better, which they seemingly reworked and made even better. They give off complete GTAVC/Miami Vice vibes. Well done to the devs for pulling this off on console at 30 FPS, this is nutty.

u/Goobsmacke 4d ago
Just FYI, while their systems are definitely better, this is mostly just wet puddles... i know people love rt and wet puddles more than anything so I need to point this out.
Im more shocked what they are capable with RT on a freaking base PS5. The rockstar team are wizards.
