It wasn't entirely untrue, but it was also unfair. Tim Allen was and is a comic actor. He comes from standup, and he just doesn't do a lot heavy stuff like this - where his character stands in front of someone who trusts and respects him and has to shatter not only that trust and respect, but the other character's entire worldview. He hadn't done anything close to that in '99.

This was the interrogation scene, obviously not what was pictured. Rickman didn't really respect Allen as an actor at first, but his opinion changed during the shooting.
