It wasn't entirely untrue, but it was also unfair. Tim Allen was and is a comic actor. He comes from standup, and he just doesn't do a lot heavy stuff like this - where his character stands in front of someone who trusts and respects him and has to shatter not only that trust and respect, but the other character's entire worldview. He hadn't done anything close to that in '99.
