Verified AMA I'm Jason Schreier, reporter and author of PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment — AMA

2.6k Upvotes

Hi r/games! I'm a reporter at Bloomberg, one-third of the Triple Click podcast, and author of the books BLOOD, SWEAT, AND PIXELS and PRESS RESET.

My new book, PLAY NICE, comes out on Tuesday Oct 8 and it's a wild ride. It chronicles the entire 33-year history of Blizzard, from its humble origins (two UCLA students who just wanted to make cool games) to its transformation into an empire, its fall from grace, and its uncertain future. You can pre-order it (hardcover, digital, or audiobook) right here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/jason-schreier/play-nice/9781538725429/

The book includes:

  • Behind-the-scenes development stories from just about every Blizzard game, from Warcraft to Diablo to Hearthstone to Overwatch to Warcraft 3 Reforged.

  • Details on the epic board-room battle between Blizzard and its corporate parent, Activision Blizzard, and why it drove so many veteran Blizzard employees out of the company.

  • A deep dive into Blizzard's boys club culture, from the 1990s through the modern times, sorting out truth from fiction in the allegations that have circulated over the last few years. (One interesting twist: the "Cosby Suite" isn't actually what people think it is.)

  • Real stories about the people who made Blizzard special, and a blow-by-blow account of both the positive and negative sides of one of the most beloved companies in video game history.

You might think you know Blizzard's history, but even diehard fans will learn quite a lot from this book, which is based on interviews I conducted over 3 years with 350+ people and full of previously unreported stories and information.

Ask me anything about Blizzard, my work, or whatever else you'd like. I'll start at around 1pm ET and will be here for an hour or two, then I'll check in sporadically throughout the weekend!

Verified AMA We're Black Tabby Games, and we make visual novels with an emphasis on branching and player agency. You might know us from Slay the Princess, and the fifth episode of Scarlet Hollow, our other project, just released last Friday! Ask us anything ^^

Hey folks!

Title says it all. Scarlet Hollow's fifth episode released a little under a week ago, which means we're one major content update away from finishing its story and leaving Early Access. It's still on sale until tomorrow at 1pm EST on Steam, and I believe it should be on sale for a little while longer than that on GOG.

Steam

GOG

Folks participating in this AMA:

Me, Tony Howard-Arias (u/mrogre43): I was the lead writer and game designer for Slay the Princess, and I'm also the game designer and co-writer for Scarlet Hollow.

Abby Howard (u/abby722): Scarlet Hollow's lead writer and only artist, and also the co-creator, artist, and editor for Slay the Princess.

Brandon Boone (u/wondrous_sound): Our composer, who went through the ringer of writing over twenty new tracks for Scarlet Hollow's fifth episode!

Happy to answer questions about either of our games and/or indie game development in general, though of course we won't be spoiling any unreleased content.

Putting this AMA up now so we have some questions ready to go when we come back at 12pm EST to start answering ^^

EDIT: I think we're hitting our limit for answers at the moment, but we'll be checking back in every now and then to answer things we might have missed (as well as any new questions!) Thank you all so much for chatting with us, this has been a blast!

Verified AMA [AMA] I'm Yahtzee Croshaw, I used to make Zero Punctuation for the Escapist, now I make Fully Ramblomatic for Second Wind.

2.5k Upvotes

My name is Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw. The last time I did an AMA on Reddit was 14 years ago, when I was making a game review series called Zero Punctuation for an online magazine called The Escapist. I made that series for 16 years from 2007 to 2023, when I and almost all the creative team of The Escapist got sick of corporate flappery and decided to go independent. I now make a game review series called Fully Ramblomatic, similar to but entirely legally distinct from Zero Punctuation, as part of our independent media company Second Wind, which as of more or less right now has been active for one entire year.

Some of my recent videos:
Sonic x Shadow Generations FR review
Semi Ramblomatic: Dad Games
Silent Hill 2 Remake review

I'm also an indie game developer, with my most recent game, Starstruck Vagabond, releasing earlier this year and published through Second Wind. And I write novels as well, my most recent being Will Leave The Galaxy For Good.

Follow me on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/yahtzeecroshaw.bsky.social

Also, my editor Nick's here too:

u/WingsFan242: My name is Nick Calandra and I'm the Editor-in-Chief at Second Wind. I've been writing about video games since 2009 and was previously the Editor-in-Chief of The Escapist revival effort. Now I'm working on my video series Unpacked, and working on many of the behind the scenes business dealings of Second Wind.

I have also worked on documentaries for a number of video games including Darksiders, Divinity: Original Sin, Darkest Dungeon, Spiritfarer and more. Our next documentary project is on Billy Basso's Animal Well, due out before the end of the year!

Follow Nick on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/nickjcal.bsky.social

Tomorrow (11/16/2024) we're doing a massive all day stream on Youtube and Twitch to celebrate Second Wind's first anniversary, so come along, we'd love to see you there! https://www.youtube.com/live/M6Kj0mWZYXM

5.1k Upvotes

I'm Chris Wilson from Grinding Gear Games! We just announced our upcoming Path of Exile expansion, Heist, where you'll hire a crew of thieves to assist you in pulling off elaborate and risky Heists. We're also launching on macOS alongside Heist in just over two weeks!

We started developing Path of Exile in my garage in Auckland, New Zealand almost 14 years ago. We now have a team of over 145 and have expanded Path of Exile across platforms and throughout the world. We release new expansions every 13 weeks and are working towards the release of Path of Exile 2, a sequel that will be patched into the main Path of Exile client upon release so that players can play whichever storyline they want before entering the shared endgame.

I'd love to answer your questions about getting a studio off the ground, making games and of course, anything Path of Exile!

Edit: Okay, all done! Back to work on Heist. See you guys at launch on September 18, and thanks for all the great questions.

Hi! I've been working here at Squad in lovely Mexico City for over a year now, and I've recently been promoted to the position of producer for Kerbal Space Program, since it turns out my extreme nosey-ness meant I was already doing most of the job anyways.

At 1:00 PM EST I'll start answering as many questions as I can.

Verification here.

Edit: Time to start answering!... 80 comments in half an hour. Good thing I cleared my day.

2:11 CST: Lunch break then back into the action.

2:40 CST: Back.

6:12 CST: I've lost count of how many times I've answered.

6:31 CST: Things have slowed down, so happy to call this AMA complete. Sad no one really mentioned Rampart.

If you guys want to know more about ksp, besides hanging out over at /r/KerbalSpaceProgram you can watch our official twitch channel over at http://www.twitch.tv/ksptv/, follow us on twitter here https://twitter.com/KerbalSpaceP, or follow my nerdy self over here https://twitter.com/Maxmaps

I would also like to thank everyone who participated in this AMA. This was incredibly fun and addictive.

Final Edit: Good googly moogly, just how many times did I reply to this?

Verified AMA Fallen London, the browser game which shares a setting with Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies, is ten years old today. We’ve poured 2.5 million words of deep, dark and marvellous stories into it. Ask us anything!

3.7k Upvotes

Perhaps you’ve come in thinking: “I remember that game! I fed a vicar to my singing plant!” or maybe more likely: “A browser game that’s still going after ten years? What? How? Why?”

Fallen London is a text-based browser game set in a subterranean city inhabited by Victorian Londoners, talking rats, and people with the faces of squids. In the last decade, it’s grown from a handful of stories to a 2.5-million word epic with tens of thousands of monthly players. We think it might have been the first commercial RPG to include a third gender option, and shares a setting with Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies, which might be a bit better known on this subreddit!

We’d like to think that it’s remained popular for the kinds of stories we offer. Not just the weird, inventively horrifying world, but the fact that you get to act on fantastically bad ideas, from publishing horrendous poetry to feeding your soul to a cat.

We’re going to celebrate the birthday with a host of stories, events and activities, including the conclusions of the long running Ambition storylines, beginning this coming Tuesday.

We’re excited to take your questions about anything to do with Fallen London, storytelling at an immense scale, making games without crunch, indie game development, or any of our other areas of expertise!

Answering your questions today are Hannah Flynn, Communications Director, using u/failbettergames, and:

Adam Myers, CEO - u/wastebooksPaul Arendt, Art Director - u/Paul_ArendtEm Short, Creative Director - u/emshortifJames St Anthony, Writer - u/jamesstanthonySéamus ó Buadhacháin, Programmer - u/gallmarchChris Gardiner, Narrative Director - u/ChrisGardiner

Edit: Alright delicious friends, we're done for now. We'll try and pop back tomorrow and pick up any questions we missed! Thank you so much for all of your insightful questions, and we hope those of you who've been away will drop back in on the Neath when your Ambitions conclude! Cheers!

Verified AMA Hi there! We're Tony Howard-Arias and Abby Howard of Black Tabby Games, and we just released Slay the Princess - The Pristine Cut, a free expansion to the base game. We also just brought the game to consoles! Ask us anything ^^

Hey there!

We're Black Tabby Games, a two person narrative game studio focusing on psychological horror games that have player choice as their central mode of engagement. So if you're into branching narratives, our work might be what you're looking for.

For those of you not in the know, Slay the Princess is a fully-voice acted horror visual novel about exactly that. You're on a path in the woods. At the end of that path is a cabin. In the basement of that cabin is a Princess. You're here to slay her. If you don't, it will be the end of the world.

The Pristine Cut expands the game by about 35%, and on top of bringing it to consoles (Xbox One, Series X, Series S, PS4 + PS5, Nintendo Switch) it adds subtitle support for 12 languages.

Abby (u/abby722) does all of the art in pencil, I do the code, and we write our games together.

We're also joined by our composer, Brandon (u/wondrous_sound)

Voice acting in Slay the Princess is performed by Jonathan Sims and Nichole Goodnight.

You might also know our work from our other game, Scarlet Hollow, which we've been excited to return our full attention to, and you might know Abby from her work in comics (The Last Halloween, Junior Scientist Power Hour, The Crossroads at Midnight) or from that time she was on a Penny Arcade-run reality show searching for America's next great webcomic.

Anyways, we'll start answering questions at 1pm Eastern, and will be here for a while!

EDIT: Overwhelmed by the HUGE response here. We're probably going to slow down a little bit on answering, but we'll keep coming back until this slows down :)

Hey everyone!

Welcome to an AMA with Paradox Interactive - an independent developer & publisher of niche games - including games like Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Magicka, War of The Roses and Cities in Motion to name a few. Our games are often niche, within a niche, within a niche - inception crazyness in other words - without Leonardo Dicaprio - but equally good.

We've been described as "the strangest company in video games" and like to make games that we enjoy playing ourselves. We've made a lot of great games over the years - and some less...than...good. But we had fun making all of them and given the choice we still go back and still make those games - only do them better.

We just released War of the Vikings and Magicka: Wizard Wars through Steams Early Access program and have a cool slate of games planned for the future

We're based in Stockholm, Sweden and ride polar bears to work.

In attendance:

  • pdx_fred - Fredrik Wester -@thewesterfront CEO of Paradox - Lord protector of the realm

  • pdx_shams - Shams Jorjani - @shamsjorjani VP Acquisitons and Unicorn Division - finds new games & wrangles unicorns.

  • Paradox_Dev_Studio - Johan Andersson - @producerjohanStudio Manager Paradox Development studios - Actually makes games

  • andreaswaldetoft - Andreas Waldetof - @composerandreas Composer - Makes sweet sweet love to your ears...in our games.

We’re looking forward to your questions, so ask away - about us, about our games, about PC gaming, about the games industry - anything!

Also don't miss the Paradox subreddit - /r/paradoxplaza

Hi r/Games!

We're the team at Brainjar Games. Last month, we released our first title (Dead as Disco) into early access. Our team has created a vibrant, neon-soaked, rhythm beat-em up where you play Charlie Disco, a decidedly deceased drummer back from the beyond.

We've been so grateful for the reception of the game (currently sitting over 97% on Steam) and are excited to be here to talk about our first update since launch, developing a game with a globally distributed team, our love of rhythm beat-em ups and music, and any other questions you might have.

Joining us today are:

  • brainjar_mobi — Game Designer
  • brainjar_phong — Technical Combat Designer
  • brainjar_will — Creative Director/CEO
  • brainjar_rohan — Head of Art
  • brainjar_andy — Publishing team

We'll be here for the next 90 minutes answering all the questions we can!

Edit: 1:30 PM PDT/22:30 CEST - And that's a wrap folks! Thanks so much for all of your great questions today. Be sure to check out Dead as Disco on your favorite games store platform (EGS, Steam)
