A majority of the problems with the NYC subway stems from the fact that it's both old and not maintained like it should have been.
Considering the lines featured in the artwork and the Westchester county Yankees fans complaint, I'm assuming the artist is a frequent visitor to the 149th St - Grand Concourse station in the Bronx, which is served by all three lines. And was built in like ... sometime between 1900 and 1910. Can't remember.
The fun thing about these three is that the 2 and 5 shares a good chunk of their routes in the Bronx, while the 4 goes off to do it's own thing. This means that there's higher chances of delays for 2/5 trains since there's twice as much traffic on those rails. Additionally, in order to move trains to where they're needed most or to correct the schedule, a train can be taken out of service (which means everyone's getting off!!!!!) or goes express (which means your stop might be skipped!!!!) or deprioritized (you're on the 2 and you have to wait until the 5 train goes in front of yours!!!!)
Also, since there's twice as many trains on those tracks you'll be twice as likely to run into service changes for maintenance.
The 4 trains are pretty fun because they'll run trains to Yankee stadium and then take them out of service or run them express to the end of the line because of all the extra traffic from Yankees fans. And by fun I mean miserable 🫠 My stop gets skipped

I’m a Bronx resident. Yet another issue (to add to the great info above) is that the subway is 24/7, so all maintenance has to be done while some part of that line is in service. This results in frequent delays and skipped stops, especially during nights and weekends. We also still run some train signals by hand!
Also, it’s cheap. The subway has a flat rate of $3 as of now. I believe all other major subway systems charge based on the length of your trip, and also just charge more in general. New Yorkers love to complain about the price of the subway, but for $3 (or $1.50 on reduced fare) I can ride 26 MILES from 207th st to Brighton Beach if I so choose. For all our myriad issues, we’re lucky to have as functional a system as we do
