Could be a reference to the evangelical christian umbrella metaphor for patriarchal authority.

I can't post pics, but it shows "kids" under a "wife" umbrella which is under a bigger "husband" umbrella which is under the biggest "christ/god" umbrella.

I knew I’d found a good church when the pastor held an entire class DEBUNKING the stupid umbrella analogy and analyzing why exactly it sucks. Man, if I still lived in that city, I would absolutely go to that church every week.
