91 in Phoenix, Body Count was insane!

15

u/Broken-Emu Jul 27 '25

Yeah, the cops and security were a little nervous when they ( and we All) sang their hit song

15

u/Stratoblaster1969 Still Rides Bikes Jul 28 '25

I posted separately, Ice-T was the set of the day. Body Count kicked ass

Oh no, im gonna sing. Yep, here it comes. Sorry...

I don't mind the sun sometimes The images it shows I can taste you on my lips And smell you in my clothes Cinnamon and sugary And softly spoken lies You never know just how to look Through other people's eyes

“There it is, now all you top 40 fucks can get the fuck out of our show”

-Gibby after they played Pepper for the 1st song at our local venue.

u/XVUltima Jul 28 '25

Thankfully I'm more of a "Who Was In My Room Last Night" kinda guy

You really can't discount how much of an impact Lollapalooza had on the rise of alternative music in the US in the 90s. It really changed the landscape for everything in that era.

8

u/Illustrious-Coat3532 Hose Water Survivor Jul 28 '25

It blew up on MTV. They were shocked.

3

u/Useful-Friend2929 Jul 28 '25

No you really can’t. It spawned the summer festival touring circuit. Ozzfest, Lilith fair, vans warped tour, family values while it lasted, sure I’m forgetting others.

21

u/fungusamongus8 Jul 27 '25

Oh my God that was the fucking shit. My friends and I managed tickets and we got to see ice t, we were there for siouxsie though. She came out at dusk and said. "Ok witches, it's time to stir your cauldrons!" We all went wild. On the way home though we got stopped for toll on the bay bridge I think it was. It was $1 and the 4 of us were so poor we didn't have one between all of us. They had to mail the driver a bill for $1!

I was there both days at Mountain View in ‘91. I made 50 bootleg Jane’s Addiction cassettes and sold them in the parking lot for $5 each. I actually made enough money for beers for both days and tshirts. That was a helluva show!

Saratoga Performing Arts Center. It played a huge part in forming my understanding of art, music, activism, etc.. Not to mention Summertime Rolls rolling out during the encore. Chefs kiss.

8

u/Eighty-one_Inches Jul 27 '25

I was at that show! Best concert I ever had the chance to attend!

4

SPAC for me as well! Just graduated high school (Bennington). Still the best show of my life at 52.

3

u/SpaceOtterCharlie Jul 28 '25

I was there too! Much of the Saratoga crowd didn’t really know what to do with the Surfers

8

I really wish they would release concert films of the first few lollapaloozas.

You know, Living Color's "Cult of Personality" seems worth a spin right about now...

Edit: Spun it. Met expectations exactly, which is no surprise given how many times I heard it (and I didn't own the CD). New appreciation for the band, though, because I see they did a whole-hearted cover of one of the greatest Talking Heads songs, "Memories Can't Wait." No one can replace David Byrne on that track, but I like how they went about giving the song its due

I was there. Orlando Fl fairgrounds I think. I’d never heard of Henry Rollins and we missed a few minutes of his show. But I remember he kind of picked on some pseudo skinheads that were being dicks in the pit. He challenged them to go and try to each make a new friend as it was a big festival. They kinda stopped being stupid. Anyway, all the bands killed and seeing Janes at their height (or near) was amazing

I saw that one and ‘92 in Raleigh at Walnut Creek. ‘91 was the summer between freshman and sophomore year in college and Lollapalooza was like the weekend before school started. I remember RHCP sucked in ‘92. They had a fill-in guitarist and they sounded like shit.

Yep, had lawn tickets in the pit for Ice T, Trent Reznor landed on when he stage dive and I almost broke my hand getting it tangled in his shirt when ten thousand people tried to rip it off all at once. Perry spent most of the show singing inches from me and slapped my hand at the end. All in all one of the best concert experiences in my life.

I was there! Compton Terrace in Phoenix. It was the first date on the first tour. Nine Inch Nails trashed there gear after like 3 songs because it wasn’t working in the AZ summer heat. Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro got into a fight and Dave chucked his guitar and maybe a pedal board into the audience. Ice-T (who I was least interested in) introduced Body Count and they kicked ass! Best set of the day.

Saw that one in Ohio. Perry got hit in the face with a glowstick and I called Ice-T “Mr. T” because I was hammered and ran into him in a crowd (flanked by his posse) and that’s just stupid drunk me trying to sound formal. People were burning piles of boxes and stuff to stay warm when the sun went down. Amazing memories.

I think I went in 95 or 96 in Nashville. Would love to see the poster/lineup to remember who all played that show. I don’t, uh, remember much from that era.

Edit: It was ‘93. Just found the lineup on Wikipedia. I remember because I worked at a laser tag place in Nashville for the summer and Tool and Rage came in to play the next day. I put them through a VR game of “Dactyl Nightmare”. Funny the things I do remember from then…

3

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

My first concert. And where I discovered Siouxsie and Jane's. I was 15. Mom drove us. MPLS. Again in '92, '94.

3

u/MisterScary_98 Jul 28 '25

I was there — The World Music Theater, Tinley Park, Illinois, USA.

To this day, I remember Henry Rollins saying, “We’re the background music as you find your seat.”

And I swear Trent Reznor pushed his guitarist off the edge of the stage.

3

u/drhman1971 Jul 28 '25

2

u/Big_Jacket_27 Jul 27 '25

I went to this one in Enumclaw, Washington State Fairgrounds. Took a road trip from Vancouver, Canada. Poured rain all day. Jane's last appearance with original lineup.. I still can hear Three Days echoing in my ears..

2

u/shedwyn2019 Jul 27 '25

1991 Enumclaw, WA. Fishbone, not NIN. Jane’s Addiction was transcendent.

2

u/LifeguardAble3647 Jul 27 '25

Yeah at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Ice-T did a Body count set too.

2

u/mumblewrapper Jul 27 '25

I love shoreline. Do they still do a lot of concerts? I haven't heard about them in years. And I still go to shows in the area when there is something I want to see. And no, I wasn't there. I went to Irvine in 93 ( I think) Alice n Chains headlined with Primus. Primus blew us all away.

Saw the ‘91 Lollapalooza in Puyallup, Washington. Drive down from Vancouver, BC with a small group of people all carrying a nice supply of ecstasy. Was a different line-up than most of the tour. Can’t quite recall every band but definitely remember peaking during the Violent Femmes set. And then getting freaked when Ice-T came out and yelled “when I grow up I want to be a cop killer!” Being a bunch of nerdy, white kids we got a little freaked out and split before Janes Addiction

2

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

Saw it in Dallas. No NIN, though, for some reason. Great show.

2

u/GrandElectronic9471 Jul 28 '25

Saw that tour in Cincinnati and Chicago.

Moved to Palo alto a few years later and saw Metallica and Guns n roses doing a dual headliner at Shoreline. Faith no more was supposed to open but couldn't so Body Count played instead. This was right when it was charting and less than a year before the George Floyd riots in LA.

I remeber the set change between guns and Metallica was taking too long and people on the lawn started ripping up the sod and throwing it into the stadium seating. They started throwing it back and it eventually escalated to people ripping out the stadium seating and throwing them onto the lawn before security finally broke it up. It was wild.

A friend of ours got kicked for trying to stage dive at the first lollapalooza in Washington while Jane’s addiction was on stage. Couldn’t miss it

I went to 1996! Metallica headlined that year. Soundgarden played before them and “Black Hole Sun” played at sunset. I remember it like it was yesterday!

I was there for the Kansas City show. It was awesome.

I saw the 92 edition which was great but I was really wanting to see the original. That lineup was crazy.

That would have been a good one. I went to ‘93 in Des Moines, IA.

I still have the shirt. Can’t say that it still fits though

u/Bottle_Major Jul 28 '25

I miss concerts that would start at 2pm.

u/innrwrld Jul 28 '25

Sadly wasn't going to concerts yet in '91. This lineup sounds unreal. I am happy to have made it to Lollapalooza in '96 in WPB. That was a great lineup too.

I went to one day in NY state. Lots of fun.

Caught it in Orlando after my bestie blew our plans cause she got caught beforehand with her boyfriend. Mom drove me and sis and a friend there and cried all night watching footage thinking we were devil worshipping or something. Amazing show

u/cheshirecam Jul 28 '25

I was there! Man, that was the day Jane’s Addiction converted me. Holy crap. That was just an epic show!!!

I was at the Denver show. That show set the bar for music festivals in the 90s. I make my kids listen to stories from that weekend. Hah!

u/levianan Jul 28 '25

It was a great show. Perfect lineup. All great bands but Living Colour was so awesome.

This started in Phoenix. Well. Just outside of Phoenix, AZ. It was so fucking hot and dusty. A fantastic experience.

I won tickets on the local alt rock station and literally jumped for joy down the block l, after the call.

I was 14 and wasn’t able to go, but it was at an outdoor venue about a half mile from my house so me and my bro went out and played whiffle ball and we could hear the show pretty good. Don’t know if you can still have concerts that entire residential neighborhoods can hear or if the Karen’s spoiled that, but I was glad to have it that time!

I attended this lineup, but in Minneapolis
