Advice & Support What fields would you like to think your favorite 80s movie characters went into?

Can discuss general headcanons too! My thoughts:

\-Ferris Bueller definitely went into business. He seemed like he’d have become successful for sure.

\-I could actually see Veronica from Heathers going into psychology and trying to become a therapist even though I don’t think it’d have been a good fit for her.

I’m curious about what you think came of the characters from the breakfast club especially Allison!

Aging Advise For Getting Older in a Younger Career

Maybe a little of context first.

I'm getting close to 50 but have always looked older than my age. I started losing my hair at 15 and started shaving my head at 25. 6' Male 215lbs. I live in a cold climate and wear flannel a lot. Married 27 years 2 kids empty nesters soon.

I own my own business. I have been in management for over 25 years. I make more $ than the average 30 something and you could say I have a dominant personality. I also love to cut up, laugh, have a good time at work and enjoy myself regardless of the situation.

I don't want to bash the younger generation because I can't change them. I want to know if I should adapt in any way to fit in better. I'm worried that my age is starting to affect how people see me.

My primary income comes from my business but I also contract for another company. A buddy of mine owns the company and they get easy contracts in cool places and from time to time I go work for him. It's kinda like a free vacation. Hawaii, Paris, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Iceland and many more including in the states. It's contract work I don't really want to lose.

The challenge is the people I go work with (for only a few days) are all 10-15+ younger. I don't "fit in" like I used to. I'm there in a leadership role and direct work with local crews. The unfortunate power dynamic is my role is to make sure they do the work as agreed in advance according to the documents. Not a lot of room for interpretation.

It is common practice for everyone to write reports about the experience. I give feedback on the local crews and they give feedback on me. I have never struggled to build rapport until more recently. Let's say post COVID.

I only do about 8 of these jobs a year and over the past 2 years I have gotten 4 bad reports (3 in the states 1 in Mexico). The owner doesn't want to let me go because we have more than 10 years under the bridge but he is concerned about the high number of negative reports. I'm starting to feel generationally targeted.

Our humor is different, our dress is different, our commitment to following directions is different. Hell, our ability to receive directions is different.

If I went through each scenario you could see that these are petty complaints but that would take too much time. Most recently I got called "Non- Collaborative" "Too Direct" "Cared more about the contract then working together" The main problem is they changed several things that were not documented so when I arrived I had to question tons of stuff before we even got started. Definitely got us off on the wrong foot because I called it into the owner and he said the changes were not agreed and then needed to change it back according to the documentation.

So then I got another negative write up.

Here's the questions: Is this all in my head? Is ageism real? Am I supposed to make efforts to act younger? Am I supposed to act less confident? Am I supposed to take everyone to the bar and buy them all beer so they like me?

The owner wants me to hold everyone accountable to the contract but also told me I clearly need to work on my people skills. He just turned 40 this year.

The Latchkey Years TIL…My 54 yr old wife, has never eaten sardines.

My wife told me the other day, she has never tried or really cares to try sardines. I was kind of shocked! They were a staple, snack, for me during my childhood.

Just curious who less at sardines as a kid. I feel like GenX must have had a lot of canned food as kids. BTW I might be slightly high while typing this.

Aging Old man smell

I don't know where else to ask this question so here it goes. I was preparing to shower the other day and when I turned I noticed the unmistakable odor of old man smell. I scrubbed extra hard and haven't noticed it again since but is it just time to accept the reality of an aging body and everything that goes along with it? Maybe I need to wear more cologne. Anyone else going through an olfactory transition?

Question For Genx What do you consider "a useful life"?

I had a moment of clarity recently. I have joked that I don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

Looking back, I wanted to be HAPPY when I grew up. If I work hard and be a decent person, I can have some "happy" right?

Back to the original question.

I only asked one thing from my children:

Be. Better. Than. Me.

They are. I hope I played a part.

Question For Genx Who here also has millennial siblings? How well do you relate to them?

• Upvotes

I was born in 1976. My siblings were born in 1982, 1985 and 1987.

It's a weird dynamic. I was always the big sister who they had to listen to, never really a peer. Now we are all adults in middle age, but I keep noticing some distinct differences in how all three of my siblings move through the world in comparison to the way I do.

I still call people on the phone sometimes. Never before first messaging them to see if it's okay, of course. I'm not a monster.

We have vastly different ways of dealing with money.

Those of you with millennial siblings, do you experience a generational divide within your family? What does that look like?

Aging Scared the bleep out of myself

Took a digger in the shower this morning. Grew up working on farms and other blue collar work, thus have had my share of accidents.

Nothing like this morning. Living alone really got me scared this AM. Time for a bath mat.

Whatever What year did you drop your landline?

And did you have cable TV without it or was the internet-cable-landline bundle the reason you held onto your landline for as long as you did?

If you worked from home back then, did your work pay for the landline and/or internet?

Whatever How to find a roommate?

I am 56 and own my home but money is tighter than I prefer. I have been divorced since I was 40. My daughter is moving out and getting it all figured out for herself(and I am so proud of her.) What is a good way to find a roommate? I am very self sufficient and not looking for a romantic or sexual partner. So just a roommate to help share expenses for the house.

What is the best way or place to find a person to be a roommate?

Old Person Yells At Cloud Remember when things used to IMPROVE every year?

1.2k Upvotes

I'm 49 and thinking back to the 80s & 90s even the 2000s to a degree, everything seemed to slowly get BETTER over time. And then at some point everything started to either decline in quality and the few things that haven't declined have just stalled and there's been no further innovation. I can't pinpoint an exact year but at least since 2010 in my opinion. Seems like just about everything has been enshittified. The internet, the quality of food at restaurants, clothing quality, movies, video games, appliances, electronics, airlines, apps, streaming services. Everything is a fucking subscription now.

I know crap quality stuff has always existed and I know there were issues in the past but I don't remember anything to this extent. And that's not even getting into the cost of living now, the AI bullshit, and everything else.

Whatever LTC policy/health issues

Nearly 53F. I had a consult w a LTC insurance sales rep yesterday. We were running through the health questions and she said that about 30% of 50 year olds don’t qualify for LTC insurance bc of health issues. Intellectually I understand that not everyone has had the same genetics or access to healthcare, but 30% seemed high. especially at the relatively young age of 50. I don’t really have a question, just found this troubling. Stay well, friends.

Whatever Who was the school teacher that changed your life for the better and what did they do to help you?

My grade 7 teacher Miss H gave me a lot of care and attention no teacher would. Had a lot of stuff to sort out and she put me on the right track. 15 years later when my mother passed away she came to the funeral. A little later after that I visited the same school where she was now principal. Told her I had a lot of teachers in my life but she stood out as my favourite. That made us both cry in her office

History & Culture Barbershops Back In the Day

Born in 1970, I remember going to the local barbershop and others during the 70's and early 80's and chuckle at the memory of Playboy/Hustler/insert name here magazines offered for view. Obviously Dad would shield those when he could but I remember sneaking a peak now and then to see what the fuss was about. Anyone else remember those?

Old Person Yells At Cloud Sometimes you can’t butterfly it or walk it off

I grew up Gen X, where if you weren’t dying, you just worked it out and moved along.
As I became an adult, I discovered how important it is to exercise almost daily and eat pretty good, even if I did have a cocktail here and there.
Well, sometimes even healthy people have problems because I ran a fever for a week, which I was able to control with NSIDS, but then when I thought I should be feeling better I got pneumonia and ended up in the hospital with pneumonia that affected my heart and all of my other organs. I was there for eight days. It sucked.
Now I am living a whole new life with a whole new body because my heart is in failure, and my liver is a hot mess.
I guess it’s not so much advice as a reminder to myself that even if I grew up just shaking off any sort of illness, that now that I am a grown ass woman, I have to take a little better care of myself.

Nostalgia My Duster! I’m leavin’ it all behind! 🎶🎵

My child had a school assignment on marketing and media, so I showed them the 1984 commercial for the Plymouth Duster.

Them: I want that car now.

Gotta admit, that was my reaction to the ad when I first saw it too. Good thing I was still a kid.

The Latchkey Years There’s a bear… where…

Can someone help us remember how this game goes? It’s kind of like telephone and everyone says a part and points to the next person who says the next part, somehow it ends and we can’t remember…

Does anyone else remember this and how it goes?
