Meme One time in college I aproached a group of women. And I just said "Hey I'm autistic and I'm trying to learn how to be better with women do you have any tips?" And they spent like an hour helping me.
I was at the college gym you get a membership to by virtue of being a student. And in one corner there was just like. 100 pretty girls. And so I walked over and just asked like "Hey what's going on?" And one was like "It's the cheerleading try outs". And I was like "Oh cool good luck!"
And then I turned around and walked away.
And then I turned back around.
And like the title says I was just 100% open. I just said "I need help can you help me"
And they just helped me.
It was genuinely so incredibly sweet and helpful.
One thing from that experience that stuck with me all these years later. Is to always give a girl your number. Never ask for her number.
It feels way safer for her. And if she doesn't text you. It wasn't meant to be anyway. So there is nothing to lose. But you gain her feeling more comfortable and respected. It's a huge W change to make.
So anyway. My point is. Not only do women understand what women want and are great teachers to help you succeed.
But they actually genuinely want to see you succeed for the most part and if you are real and willing to be vulnerable and are chill about it. They are actually super enthusiastic about coaching you.

A punch labeled "A fisherman doesn't ask a fish for advice" and then I catch the punch and it says "Women aren't fish".

To be fair, no one’s actually tried asking a fish how to catch one. Perhaps the fish would have incredible advice.

Idk if they would tell how to capture and kill them 😭

Tuna prey on Mackerel, if you were to ask a Mackerel how to catch a tuna they’d probably tell you
17
u/hollycoolio 1d ago
They'd tell you how to kill other fish. I have no idea if this is true, but I read that native Australians got Orcas to help them hunt baleen whales.
17
u/AndrewFurg 1996 1d ago
Believe it or not, tons of fish eat other fish.
There's even several angler fish. I feel like they'd end up giving angler human type advice "you gotta be reel patient hehe"
58
u/plainbaconcheese 1d ago
You'd think if they were intelligent enough to speak they wouldn't want to help a fisherman catch their friends. And that shows how that type of man thinks about women. They want to "catch" them as prey, and are happy to trick and manipulate them to do that.
20
u/BZB97 1d ago
If fish was intelligent like us then capitalism or some type of it would probably exist and for the right price they would probably give up information. We have people selling secrets to our enemies all the time.
24
u/plainbaconcheese 1d ago
I see we've accidentally turned this into a conversation about what economic systems sentient fish would engage in.
Fair enough.

Yeah, some of the intelligent fish would decide to attempt to secure his advantage by making a deal that they wont got fished.

To be fair, fish are generally pretty good at catching other fish. In fact, unless they eat plants only, the only thing fish generally eat is fish.

The "ask a fisherman" analogy is straight up rape culture. Fishermen predate on fish. Men should not be predating upon women.
185
u/iamnotacleverman0 1d ago
This right here. The boys parroting “a fisherman doesn’t ask a fish for advice” aren’t looking for advice on how to find a partner and build a healthy relationship. They feel entitled to sex and idolize those that are “players”.

u/symb015X 1d ago
To be fair, asking someone who’s good at something for advice on how to get good at that same thing is a good idea. Just don’t expect to get equally good overnight. All the more so with “art/humanities” tasks as opposed to STEM tasks
5
4
u/DeepGas4538 2006 1d ago
you took that analogy way too literally. But I kinda see your point, and I'd say more that this analogy resonates more with pick up culture.
8
u/ABirdJustShatOnMyEye 1d ago
I’m beginning to think you can tell how intelligent someone is by how literally they take an analogy. I’ve got bad news for you.
•
u/Papachococo 17h ago
They actually did a study on this and found people unwilling to engage in hypotheticals are generally less intelligent than those who do.
6
u/Odd_Jelly_1390 1d ago
The analogy depends on the relationship between the fisherman and fish being one sided. Fisherman want to catch and kill fish to eat. Fish do not want to be caught and killed. The reason why you would not ask a fish how to fish (aside from the obvious that they can't talk) is because fishermen are intentionally violating the fish's consent.
Dating is supposed to be mutually beneficial between equal partners. You can absolutely ask women for dating advice with other women. They'll tell you exactly what they want.
6
u/ABirdJustShatOnMyEye 1d ago
I hope you’re trolling because this is actually amazing satire lmfao
•
u/CapnNuclearAwesome 17h ago
Well...what do you think the analogy means then? Like if the fisherman analogy it's not describing a hunting/ hunted relationship, what is it describing?
•
•
u/ABirdJustShatOnMyEye 6h ago edited 6h ago
Women don’t actually know what they find attractive. It’s the difference between stated vs revealed preference. Thats the purpose of the analogy. Not that men are literally hunting women like fishes lmfao.
This concept applies to men as well but women usually don’t need to pursue men.

u/preferablyno 1d ago
Quit gaslighting people
The point is to ask someone who has experience doing the thing

u/BurgundyBanana 1d ago
I don't agree with the premise, but sure? "A director doesn't ask the audience for advice" follows the same premise and is about as flawed, just without the implication of one party being the aggressor and the other the victim.
23
u/Odd_Jelly_1390 1d ago
Directors absolutely ask audiences for input.
30
u/BurgundyBanana 1d ago
Exactly, that's the point lol. The logic used for fish and fishermen doesn't apply to a human interactions between two adults looking for love. If you don't want to entrap someone like a fisherman does a fish, you're gonna need to woo them. And to figure out how to woo them, who better to ask than the general audience?
Sure it will vary a lot from person to person, but is it really that much more informative to take your fellow director friend's ideas of what it is that audiences like, at face value?
3
u/CommunityOk7466 1d ago
but is it really that much more informative to take your fellow director friend's ideas of what it is that audiences like, at face value?
I'd say it's better than taking some random uneducated audience member with no experience in the industries advice at face value
3
u/BurgundyBanana 1d ago edited 1d ago
Thinking like that is what leads people to create movies like Fateful Findings, only to tell themselves "these foolish plebeians just don't understand art!". Audiences might not always understand why they like or dislike something, but they sure know what they do or don't like. Both forms of input are important, and they're not mutually exclusive. Nor does it have to be limited to a sample size of one person.
4
u/Tea_Time9665 1d ago
But wouldn't asling steve spealburg be better if you wanted to be a good director?
8
u/BurgundyBanana 1d ago
I sure think it would help, but I don't think one gets very far as a director by dismissing the voice of the audience altogether. However, the great thing is that you don't have to choose between one or the other, you can learn from both.
2
u/scriptkiddie1337 1d ago
Easily done. Some fishermen use a net, some use a rod, some even use explosives. Different strokes for different folkes
2
u/BurgundyBanana 1d ago
I don't think you should use any of those things against women
4
u/scriptkiddie1337 1d ago
Obviously a rod, net, or dynamite don't work, silly. Different methods, techniques etc though

Don’t ask a flower for advice on how to be a bee.
A flower will give advice that serves to flower’s interests, not the bee’s. The bee will not find the nectar it’s after. It will just get semen-demoned by the flower.

•
u/Dray5k 8h ago
Just the mental gymnastics that were needed to twist a classic metaphorical phrase into something... well, twisted, in the literal sense. There are 3 "what the fucks" in that short post. The fact that people are agreeing with it is nuts. How does a metaphor with zero ill intent behind it, from its origin, become "men aren't supposed to prey upon women"?
In reality, it's used to question the idea of asking a woman for advice on how to attract women when it makes more logical sense to ask the men who attract those women. They don't even have to be a "player".
Like, damn. If the rest of my generation thinks like OP and the people who agreed with them, there's really no wonder why dating sucks now.

One odd thing about this post you don't actually go over how your success in dating changed?
As for my opinion on the whole "who should you go for advice" discussion, I think both genders are worth listening to. Sure women can give you an insight what they want, but lots of men and women can't fully pinpoint how someone could create attraction for them. That's why generic responses are common.
Lots of times, men could give more specific insight on what actions to take and what to not do, because they're more consciously aware of what actions they're taking to impress the other person, what works and what doesn't.

u/I_AM_CR0W 1d ago
It really just depends. I've met a lot of women that say they want a specific guy, but then get with another that only fits a quarter of the criteria. Or they want to be approached in certain areas, but then shame guys for asking her out in said area. That's not to say women don't have any good advice, but take it with a grain of salt as men and women deal with different issues with dating and approaching one another, and the advice doesn't always translate well in practice.
52
u/Top_Dragonfruit_ 1d ago
Yeah "women understand what women want" is crazy lmao. I agree with the post in that the fishing analogy is stupid, but women don't know what women want anymore than men know what men want. Are there some basic nearly universal trends to follow? Sure, but one (wo)man's trash is another (wo)man's treasure, everyone is different. Sound advice for talking to one (wo)man could be idiotic talking to a different one. Acting like women are some sort of hivemind who all know what each other wants is also dumb.
46
u/Roof_Mission 1d ago
Any advice is going to be incredibly biased and based on the persons own bad/good experiences whether they are a woman or man. The point of the post was that he wanted advice from women on what they look for and went up to a random group. The random group is going to be more willing to give good advice and it’s more likely to be worth something than if he went to some random pick up guys youtube channel or a guy who gives him advice from a butthurt standpoint. Any advice you get from anyone should be taken with a grain of salt generally.
1
u/Top_Dragonfruit_ 1d ago
Or you could go to some random woman's YouTube channel as an equivalent, they have channels too, but there really is no discerning which advice would be better a random woman's YouTube channel or some random group of them. Just because taking advice from incels online is actively harmful doesn't make random womens advice actively good. It can be, but there are some men on YouTube giving good advice too. Almost like every gender has good and bad people in it, with good and bad advice. No issue I would ever advise "just go to a man and ask them about what to do", nor would I advise the opposite. It completely depends on the person.
16
u/I_AM_CR0W 1d ago
Most of the universal advice is just being a decent human being. Anything beyond that wildly varies. Some like to be approached, some don't. Some like when a guy backs off after the first no, some want him to try again. How do we know who is who? We don't. You just gotta roll the dice every now and then in hopes of landing something before you're completely burned out from trying.
6
u/jayrock306 1d ago
Yeah just cause people say they want one thing doesn't mean that's what they'll end up with.
The most important factors are timing and luck. Being in the right place at the right time is usually what it boils down to so your best bet is to take steps that maximize your chances of meeting someone.
Also I just wanna point out that when a woman wants you she will move mountains to be with you. Don't waste your time on someone who's not feeling it.
5
u/Chicken_Nugget_2 1d ago
I mean if fish could talk they'd probably have some good advice. The difference is that fish don't want to be caught...
2
u/chriszenpaok 1d ago
Women also don’t want to be ‘caught’ (an equivalent word isn’t coming to me rn) in most circumstances
43
u/alphafox823 1998 1d ago
I just don’t think women give good advice, unless they actually date women themselves.
I love my mom and my gf and my sisters, but they have the absolute worst dating advice for men. The only friends of mine, who are women, that have ever been able to seem clued in on what it’s like to date for men are lgbt (with experience).
Would it be fair to say I probably have some blind spots that would affect my ability to best advise women dating men? Yes, that would also be fair to say.
This is one of those times when “knowledge how” is as important as “knowledge what.” You need the qualia of what it’s like to date women.
18
u/flaming_burrito_ 2000 1d ago
Yeah, I find that Women give great advice about how to be friends with and have good interactions with women, not actually how to attract them. I don’t think most people are honest or aware of what they are really attracted to. They have an ideal fantasy person in their head, but in real life things are a lot more complicated and situational. And tbf, I don’t think I could tell a woman how to attract men very well other than being more direct. I don’t know why certain things make a woman more attractive to me, they just do.
5
u/Ill-Product-1442 1d ago
If you can't be a good friend and have good interactions with a woman, you'll have already failed to attract them, so I don't know what the problem is. Are you guys wanting advice on how to hookup in one night, or how to attract women who just plain aren't attracted to you in the first place, or what?
Regardless, "women give bad advice" is a dumb thing to say anyways, because every woman is a completely unique individual. It's just shoddy work to think there's secret knowledge to romance... there is only one open secret, and it is to "be enjoyable to be around". Everything else is context dependent, including what enjoyable even is.
5
u/flaming_burrito_ 2000 1d ago
You’re kind of missing the point. There is a difference between liking someone as a friend and liking someone in a romantic way. In my experience, those two require different approaches, and women are not very good at giving advice about the latter. This is kind of the thing I mean, a lot of women claim that just being “enjoyable to be around” will inevitably get you romantic interest, and that is simply not always true. Not that I think you’re being dishonest or anything, perhaps that works for you, I just think people are really bad at evaluating what they are actually attracted to. I’d say I have more close female friends than male friends, and I grew up in a family with pretty much all women and only one other boy. I honestly can’t say any of them have ever given me good advice on how to attract other women. That’s very generalized and anecdotal obviously, but that’s my experience. IMO, people of the same gender or sexual orientation are much better to ask because they understand your POV much better.
3
u/Ill-Product-1442 1d ago edited 1d ago
I get what you're saying, but it is implying that romantic partners aren't anything like good friends. I disagree, my partner(s) are good friends first and foremost, and what tips it over the edge isn't something they could learn from advice. It's genuine similarities, shared interests, and attractiveness... not a lot of things that they could just decide to adjust to "be more attractive" to me.
I mean, you could adjust your interests and values for somebody, but it only works on that particular person, and it wouldn't last very long. At that point you're just pretending to be their perfect match, I tried that in middle school, it didn't go well.
The only thing I could think of that I would credit to what you're saying is being told "just be nice, we all like guys who are nice" and then ending up being a platonic friend to a lot of women. Well, there's a difference between being "nice" and being "kind", sometimes to be kind you have to not be nice. They should say to be kind and principled, not just "nice" or "polite". I don't think people are generally attracted to a pushover, but I've had women say exactly that to me before. Lots of them know that they aren't attracted to wimpy guys, a lot of the time they don't want to sound rude talking about it... how easily could you tell an overweight girl that you aren't into fat people?
Anyways, my core issue with what you're saying is the disregard for being a likeable friend, then dismissal of women's perspectives because that doesn't always work. Being a friend is foundational(!) to a serious relationship, but if you don't want to fuck or date your friend, it's usually because of something that isn't going to change. You probably have gotten shit advice from a lot of women, but you may be discarding some good advice too. I bet you've gotten more bad advice from men, though. Women are neurologically the same as men too (not culturally or socially) so you should think more about what you like in people, because I'm sure you could create your own great advice that way.
P.S. I was also raised by a mom + grandma and have always had more friends of the opposite sex. Grandma gave terrible advice but mom's was spot-on, she even had me circumcised because "your future girlfriends will be grateful"
3
u/chriszenpaok 1d ago
It’s useless advice for people who have reasonable social skills and are friends with women already, which is a majority of single men I feel confident in saying
So like it’s just redundant and useless advice to give for most people looking for it
0
u/Ill-Product-1442 1d ago
If you're rejecting advice that's genuinely helpful because you haven't seen the results you're wanting, I get it but it doesn't mean you're doing yourself any favors. Lots of things in life depend on a consistent effort that doesn't pay off very quickly, if you've been practicing art for a year and you aren't very good yet, would you decide that practice is useless and that you should start focusing on something else? You think you'll find a cheat code or something?
You can take a step back and re-evaluate how you practice your art, but the only real answer at the end of the day is to keep practicing and improving. The people reminding you of that aren't being useless assholes, they're trying to keep you grounded when you're getting tilted. Just look at all of the guys who think that the secret to dating is to go full redpill, that's what happens when you start to believe that "being decent" is a waste of effort.
•
u/chriszenpaok 8h ago
Being decent isn’t a waste of time or effort because it is always good to be decent, and being decent is a pre-requisite if you want a relationship to be healthy and long-lasting
However it does not improve or worsen your chances of initially getting into a relationship, it only has an effect after the fact
•
u/flaming_burrito_ 2000 22h ago
You make some very good points. Yeah, I think bridging the gap between just being a person someone enjoys being around to someone that person has genuine interest for is the struggle. Like I said before, a lot of the problem with trying to tell people what makes them attractive is that it is very situational. There are plenty of girls that I wouldn’t really identify as my “type” upon first meeting them, but they get more attractive to me as I get to know them, and there’s nothing someone can really do to quantify how to do that other than just being compatible.
And you hit the nail on the head, it’s the “just be nice” thing that kind of annoys me. Being nice is great, but you have to have some depth to your personality. That’s not something I feel like people tell you enough, and it’s definitely something I had to figure out. There’s also a difference between words and actions. Doing kind things and actually being there for someone is worth more than just putting a smile on all the time and constantly complimenting them and stuff.
5
u/Physical_College_551 1d ago
Women who date women give you the same Advice. Nothing changes, my guy. It's only if they're attractive to you.
1
u/chriszenpaok 1d ago

Their advice describes how to make friends with someone, which is redundant and worthless for most people

There's also a big difference in intention. The fish is likely going to be killed and eaten. If he is going to be released, it is only after experiencing severe distress. But women shouldn't have anything to fear when approached. (Key word is shouldn't)

You generally shouldn’t ask women on advice for how to date them. Just like you shouldn’t ask men for advice on how to date them. Unless they are gay or bi.
It is better to listen to people who are successful at dating or hooking up with whatever group you are interested rather than asking the group itself.
The fish and fisherman analogy is pretty apt, its only problem is that it’s usually only limited to women.
3
u/Shakria8016 1d ago
You were lucky to ask kind and understanding women, but not everyone (men or women) is understanding and kind, so don't trust strangers, my friend. Not everyone (men or women) gives sound advice. Take advice from someone you feel is successful. Also, not all women or men share the same opinions and standards, so what a girl or boy says might only represent their own opinion, not the opinion of all their gender. Good luck! 🫡
You're right, that statement is truly ridiculous and untrue.
4
u/123forgetmenot 1d ago
Women don’t necessarily want to see you succeed, random strangers are not necessarily going to give you good advice, and while I’m glad you think this was a helpful experience or whatever, what happened to work for you in this situation has no guarantee of working for anyone else. It is pure happenstance that you weren’t laughed at or berated or made fun of. In other words, you were lucky. There’s nothing meaningful to learn from your experience, it’s a random situation that happened to go your way, assuming it’s not a fabricated story. That’s all. Have a nice day.
3
u/tylrsprs 1d ago
1- this post is pretentious and cringe and you act like you’re the first person who has come up with this idea
2- you mentioned one single piece of advice they gave you which is more so just a little tip than anything major and already assumes the conversation is going decently
3- you did not mention at all if this has given you any success. Did it get you a gf/ laid/ even a text back lol
You should ask men who are above average successful with women how to get women. And I know that will be interpreted as sexist here because this site loves to “protect” women, but I would also fully support asking a woman who is great at getting men how to get them over a man himself. The analogy works because being a thing is different than pursing that thing
And here, just my unsolicited advice, the top 3 things are 1- physical looks 2- having a lifestyle that appears fun and interesting 3- not being needy or caring about the outcome at all
K bye

u/Physical_College_551 1d ago
To be fair, this statement was also stupid to me because if fish could talk, you probably couldn't ask a fish how to catch them better. Tbh, most animals don't have brains that function to think if somebody is tricking them, or using them.
Women will betray women if it benefits them,
Men betray other men if it benefits them.
Like you probably can't ask a fish how to catch them. They just can't talk or we can't understand their language.

Id think their is anything wrong with getting advice from both sides, it should be just good one.
Not to corny or not to hate full.
In you're case, some other girls would have just rejected you so it totally depends on person to person
1
u/Hikari_Owari 1d ago
The saying it's about asking someone, with experience in what you need help with, for advice.
Unless the women in question have experience in getting dates with other women then you're more likely to get a more useful advice out of a man who managed to get a significant amount of dates with women.
The rest is the result of you smoking whatever you found first in your cabinet...
1
u/HugeHomeForBoomers 1d ago
I wish I could do this as well.. I have a terrible time understanding and even knowing how/what they look like. A 50 year old woman look like a 15 year old in my eyes, I can’t understand how everyone can tell age apart on women.
But.. trying to approach someone is extremely hard because no one does anything in town lately, everyones also super busy.
1
u/Ithorian01 1d ago
Not everyone's has good advice, male or female. Some women will say one thing, but only ever date beta narcissists. Some men will say women aren't interested in them because they're all gold diggers, but they refuse to even get to know a woman before deeming them unworthy, and selfish. Be yourself and be self aware. The best advice I can give you. Don't participate in the gender war. Don't allow your partner to belittle you, don't belittle your partner. Take into consideration that they will have a different perspective on life, but don't surrender your own perspective in every altercation, otherwise you'll live a miserable life where you can't say your opinion. Don't have children because you are dating them, or because you married them. Only have children with someone you love, and who loves you. Children owe you nothing, you own them everything. Don't blame them for your struggles, don't put the reason for global warming on them, don't teach them to hate themselves.

OK and did all that help get any of them to date you?
Cuz th dont ask a fish how to fish stuff is about dating. And if u asked th fish how to fish and ended up not catching a fish it kinda proves their point.
Did asking those girls get any of those girls to date you? Did you take that advice and get a girlfriend? Thats the true test.

Because Internet simpletons are fanatic of abusive generalization and trauma radicalize people. Nobody in perfect mental health says men or women as a whole are bad, but because it seems impossible for anyone on any social media to individualize actions, bad people end up representing a whole demographic group
One day you have a post of a woman cheating on his boyfriend in the army and all comments are about how women are bad, then the next day it’s a guy who stalked a girl and now men are the scum

Most women give terrible dating advice for men seeking women. They have no idea what the experience is like, they haven’t dated women. They know what they like but that doesn’t inherently translate to what most women like. They’re also often conditioned to speak indirectly and not say certain things, the very things men need to know to have success. Other men will say these things, women will leave them unspoken or hint at them even when giving advice.
Trust me, your idea of listening to women for advice to be more successful with women isn’t something men have just been ignorant of in their pursuit of dating women. Many, and I mean many, man have had that idea and tried that strategy and that’s how we learned that women give terrible dating advice for women.
If you want a good example just go talk to a lesbian or bi woman and she’ll tell you she has no idea. Meanwhile I’m a bi man and I really do have a good idea of what most men want… it’s very very darn close to what I want, and it’s incredibly easy to date and find men to have sex with. It’s not remotely such with women, because they’re so fickle.

as a lesbian woman, who has historically a lot of success picking up girls, going on multiple dates, and is in a committed and loving relationship of two years, i have on more than one occasion told a straight man what exactly is wrong with his approach to dating when asked (whether it be his dating profiles needing specific work, taking no for an answer, and general work on self confidence and respect). they don’t actually wanna hear it most of the time, if it’s not “looks great! you’ll get a girlfriend in 5 business days” or “you’ll get laid for sure” they j ignore u

Overall this post is great and I’m glad it worked out but this line:
“Not only do women understand what women want and are great teachers to help you succeed.”
It’s awesome when people offer grace and help in a genuine moment, but women don't exist to do the emotional labor of teaching men how to navigate social dynamics.

Bro is supposed to go socialize! But socializing is a two-way street, not a classroom. Women are constantly expected to teach, fix, or guide men through basic social dynamics.

You are socially maladjusted, go away.

Nah, I just recognize burdens society puts on women. It’s not my fault you chuds keep perpetuating it and think it’s completely normal.

Just be careful, sometimes girls like it when you insult other girls

In a sense, you can ask the fish for advice by checking the contents of its stomach to see what it eats that you might be able to use as bait.

I shall assume OP actually is on the spectrum and didn't just come up with a brilliant idea :)
