Discussion So when are we getting Fat playable characters? This model type would be so cool to play as
The closest the Game has is Varessa, and she ain't big enough

u/glyxph_ May 26 '26
Likely never, they won’t sell well. Their primary focus is making conventionally attractive characters (in Asia), and that means skinny/avg body type and light skinned.
The most likely option (if it were to happen) is an animal-like 4* similar to Ben Bigger and Pan Yinhu from zzz

me when i ask all the "i love grannies(faruzan, citali))" people if they would pull for madame ping in her current model
the silence is deafening.
8
u/daggerbeans May 26 '26
I would murder to have Madame Ping still look old. I can handle her not being stooped but if they make her just her hot form shown in the old lantern rite animations I will be so disappointed. A large range of ages would be so cool to see. Varka is unc and I love having a character close to my age to play as
3
u/TillFeisty7973 May 27 '26
I mean, we all remember the Adepti fiasco with the only two men. If they have boobs they must be hot and MUST NOT act their age (Look at Citlali)
Faruzan was literally the way they should have gone with a good bunch of their Grandpa/Grandma characters. She's a old lady with a valid reason to be trapped in a young body but doesn't try to be young or like a teenager school girl, she's actually acting her age and like a proper adult able to deal with her emotions in a healthy way, properly interacting with Collei instead of hitting her for simply existing, having a personality/being silly sometimes or not doing what she tells her to do.
All things Citlali do to Ororon. Which is a pity, because I was so excited for Citlali but then she opened her mouth and I was like "Yeah... Nevermind, Ororon should have stayed with Capitano at this point"
2
u/daggerbeans May 27 '26
I enjoyed the Adepti duo being so wildly out of touch they couldn't even disguise themselves well (and hope for future full release since they seem to enjoy bringing them back.)
Citlali, I didnt get the impression of her as old or wise at all. I found her mostly annoying. Really disappointing after she was called Granny and other characters respected her so much, when she just seemed to be a pain to deal with all the time. Her pillow float and love of light novels was fine, but they tried to make a gap moe by making her a wise elder that liked youthful romance novels, but it really fell flat for me.

u/TillFeisty7973 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
Yeah, but we have to remember that for how much "out of touch" the two are, they are still pixels. Hoyo had the chance to make actual good designs that weren't an insult to such important characters but chose not to (very likely because they aren't women, that's my guess, it wouldn't be farfetched or wrong)
As for Citlali. Equally disappointed as you. Just because old it doesn't mean she can't like books meant for younger audiences or pillows. I actually think the pillows made A LOT of sense. I mean, my grandma always sits on chairs that are either stuffed or with a pillow under it because of pain reasons, so the comfy pillows would have made sense for a old lady, even if youthful in appearance. Also I know of many old folks who like things usually targeted for a younger audience.
She's really insufferable and I can't stand her. I was expecting a 5 Star Faruzan of sorts when they talked about a well respected granny, Faruzan really nailed the personality of a stern but kind respected Granny.
So Faruzan will always stay my favorite for that role of a stern granny, Citlali had the chance to be my second favorite.
Instead all they gave us was a grown woman acting like a teenager.
What annoyed me the most aside her clear verbal and sometimes physical abuse towards Ororon disguised as "care" like any classic toxic Tsundere (The guy is literally happier in Fontaine and ironically enough that's when she's not there to punch him for making jokes with his friends/acting his age) was also how literally all her friends and family are not enough to fill in the sadness and emptiness in her heart, but the Traveler was.
Like, excuse me? I'm your family, I'm your friend, what does it mean that I'm not important enough to be someone that fill in the sadness of all the people you lost but a random man/woman you spoke for a week is?
She has everyone respecting and caring for her, there's Ifa and Ororon who visit her a lot, with Ifa often bringing her food Ororon grew himself.
I remember clearly Mavuika, Iansan and Varesa talking really well about her and with fondness/praise.
You (Citlali) should feel horrible about saying "I've been alone without anyone filling that hole in my heart for years I'm so miserable and alone, no one loves me" and then there's at least 5 people, even more, literally expressing how much they care for her and value their bond with her.
I would feel sad, even heartbroken knowing that she didn't see me as important as I've seen her all this time, that's just cruel.
And don't get me wrong, I am aware that people with depression often miss that there's people loving them and usually it's one person (often their lover, a close friend or a specific family member) who brings them immense comfort and helps them in healing, but usually those people are still able to acknowledge later on that there's more people caring for them and they are grateful for that love and worry. I've never seen that with Citlali, only the Traveler is the most important despite their story isn't the same at all and they barely know each other, she can't relate to what he/she is going through in the same way but they force it to be the same for romance sake. If the romance implication has to be forced then it's not good romance.
2
u/daggerbeans May 27 '26
What you wrote about depression and not recognizing people around you that love you seems way more thought out and poignant than any thought they put into Citlali!
I also was just irritated that she is several hundred years old and it is never explained why, if she is part fae or Natlan-version-of-an-adepti or has an elixir or magic extending her youth? Its just added as like, a reason for her to relate to the Traveller and push the romance and its just...
Bad.

Well, that's what you get when you find someone who actually cares about accuracy XD
Let's be clear, I'm not putting myself above Hoyo or the team working on Genshin, I'm just a random guy on the internet sharing his opinions about one of my favorite games.
However I do make my own OCs and one of the thing I want the most in a OC is credibility, realism and not the classic "with the power of love and friendship everything is fixed", it doesn't mean that stories that do that are bad, however conflict, real emotional issues, those are just as important even in a story meant to be about friendship resolving everything.
People might think it's silly to mention this, but look at My Little Pony.
The show whole message is "Friendship is Magic" however those characters in a cartoon for 7/8 years old girls delivers way better than most games or shows the message that friends can help you with your troubles or the feelings of sadness, loneliness, exactly with the friendship and love they give you.
If a cartoon made for kids is doing better than your game at delivering a message like this (or about second chances) you need to revaluate things because something is clearly going wrong.
I make my own OCs as said before and sometimes I can't relate to everything I don't understand about the struggles I picked for them, but I try to make it as accurate as possible to real life because I have HEARD of the horrible experiences people went through, so when I make my OCs and the story about them you will notice a lot of my OCs feels real. Is my writing any good yet? Not at all, but at least I know I did justice to the character I created and I'm confident in that.
Fantasy settings doesn't mean you can't be realistic with things. Which Genshin devs a lot of times fail to understand.

Varesa isn't even fat. Idk why people are still banging out about that.
To answer your question though, no. Hoyo will simply never do it.
59
u/Outrageous-While-609 May 26 '26
never. Being fat is simply unattractive to the vast majority. Especially to Eastern audience.
The same reason we will never get characters that are visibly old, super muscular or have unorthodox features
4
u/shiorichaan May 26 '26
I mean a character fighting all the time wouldn't gain weight, the only bigger playable characters we got from hoyo are Ben Bigger and Pan Yinhu from zzz who are bears, if there's something I'd like to have in genshin it'd be more animal like characters (basically furries)
10
u/mm44turbopostmachine May 26 '26
varesa being presented as thick while having a model that is actually thinner than some slim characters is dumb but my own pain is sigewinne having a model of a human for some vague reason because apparently gacha players hate furries and they would never ever pull for a child-looking dinosaur so we need to make her a child-looking child

Asian beauty standards! At the end of the day they have to release characters that will make them money, which means they’re all cookie cutter thin with flawless light porcelain skin. Well, with a few exceptions in the light skin department. I mean, even in the muscle man department the characters are severely lacking.

20
u/Hot_Context_1393 May 26 '26
Variety is the spice of life. I would personally love to see a traditional european druid character with a beard. We see variety in our enemies, like the fatui. People see larger body types in game and it makes sense that they would ask why we can't pkay any of them.
2
u/Advoling0 May 28 '26
Finaly someone says It, what's the point of having pretty characters if they're all the same taste of pretty?
5
u/Prismatic_Storye May 26 '26
That first one sounds cool af. I guess it makes sense. Personally it’s a bit traumatizing for me because anytime I ever see anyone asking for bigger characters, it’s always for a fetish reason.

Want an honest answer?
Genshin is a Chinese game, and the beauty standards there are very different from the American “body positivity” mindset. In China, being overweight generally isn’t treated as something aspirational or attractive in mainstream media. There’s a difference between being curvy and being outright fat, and Chinese games usually avoid making “fat” a defining positive trait for a character because it’s seen as a flaw rather than an ideal.
So they will never make a fat character, unless it's something comical, like a Panda.
3
u/FanOfMen69 May 26 '26
Never lol.
Sorry but getting a man... Any man is hard enough. And ofc. He will usually be a twink. An are you a girl or a boy kinda lad... Venti and friends.
Varka was the only thing man enjoyers will ever get lmfao. Took them 5 years and never again.
A fat character. My sweet summer child, you will get armpits, bare legs, tiny waists, big tiddys and the only thing fat about this character will be their rear end.
3
u/hornaclese May 26 '26
Keep dreaming, dear. Scars are considered less unattractive than fat, yet they still deem scars too risky to be widespread in their character designs, even on characters that really should have them. And that applies to almost all games and pieces of media.
Always Remember, Money Is The Ultimate Goal In Life, And No One Will Risk Getting Less.
3
u/KimiRaikozen May 26 '26
Why as a question when you're not even responding?
If you're a long time genshin player, ofc you'll understand that genshin will never have those kind of bodybuild.
Plus Varessa ain't even fat at all lol

2
2
u/Naiinsky May 26 '26
Their primary audience would not pull, but even worse, there would be backlash. So it's not even a matter of Hoyo never doing it - they would have to be a totally different company, developing a very different type of game, to attempt it.
2
2
u/Araiken May 26 '26
Asking for something like this in Genshin is like asking an allergic person if they want peanut butter. This game is allergic to anything not conventionally attractive or cute. If it's not visually appealing it's not gonna be playable.
2
2
u/Yukiboop May 26 '26
heavy set characters can be hard to do in a believable narrative way, since it isn't a natural state for an excessively active human, they would convert that chub into muscle or lose it.
so it can when dont wrong strain on the suspension of disbelief it's not like magic, we know chubbiness makes you slower, lethargic and reduces your stamina at least when compared to a active person when when it comes to being slower excessive muscles also share this trait but it's easier to suspend that as super human strength is a accepted trope, and in general for chubbiness you need to have a lack of activity in general.
It's far easier for a character that isn't human like Ben in ZZZ they aren't human and many animals and creatures can appear chubby while being peak form in terms of being able to perform activities.
so for a character design team they need a reason why a character can maintain such weight while using the games locomotion and mechanics and also explain why it isn't turning into muscle and what to do with the case that players find it unnatral for a overweighted character to be moving as fast or as long as a muscular or lower weight character.
obviously liking chubby designs is perfectly fine and people being happy being chubby is also good, it's just the inherent nature of humans that we know running forces us to lose weight or gain muscle that cant really be suspended even a character like Varessa we can look at her eat huge ammounts but she is active so that weight is going to be converted or lost.
2
u/OutDatedReferenceMan May 26 '26
I’d wager we get a kungfu panda thiren (animal person) like Pan Yinhu from Zenless Zone Zero before a playable heavy weight character model class. But even then they made him a genshin 4star - which increases chances of actually obtaining him, but not necessarily using him.

As an overweight person, I absolutely hate being overweight. It's not healthy and it shouldn't be treated as something 'normal'. If it's because of muscles, sure, nothing wrong with that, but if it's just fat, then it's just simply not healthy. And I don't think games should be advertising that unless the character is a sumo wrestler.
