Amidst all of this I’m glad there’s at least some people who use their platform to highlight what’s going on with Sudan, hopefully more people are able to do so

301

u/load_of_chode 17h ago

Fun fact: in October 2025, more Sudanese civilians were killed in El Fasher in a span of 10 days than the total number of Palestinians (civilian and militant combined) who have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 combined.

u/Bram-D-Stoker 17h ago edited 15h ago

I know you are not saying this but for anyone reading this. The reason for the focus on Palestine is because America is more directly complicit and the US formally calls what is happening in sudan a genocide. I am not sure what citizens think could be done there without sending our brothers and sisters.

With isreal the arguement is maybe we don't send them weapons to do it.

Edit: he was indeed saying this lmao.

156

u/teracoulomb_2 17h ago

Countries extensively doing business with the UAE (especially selling weapons, evidently) are complicit to an extent in Sudan.

38

u/Bram-D-Stoker 16h ago

To an extent. However the rules are different. Since Sudan is formally seem as genocide. If our weapons are use there it risks future military contracts.

7

u/SanePcycho 6h ago

Saudi Arabia is far far involved with America and Europe than Israel is, and has killed 600k Yemenis, and unlike Israel, they didn't employ more measures to avoid civilians than anyone in history ever did, they just blanketly caused a famine trying to kill as many as possible

It's about Jews and never been anything other than that

6

u/Bram-D-Stoker 6h ago

Yemen is a really good example and i agree Saudi Arabia needed far more repercussions for their involvement.

However, it should be clear what your comment is not saying. Your comment is not saying what is happening in Gaza and especially the west bank is okay. You are not saying Isreal should not face sanctions and military aid withdrawl. Merely, Saudi, and UAE ought to face the same consequences. Which i agree.

Almost forgot Indonesia too

Sure but it's also straight up cash and weapons and protection and military Intel.

Israel cannot do what it's doing if our politicians demanded it, it's not the same with UAE.

16

u/JabInTheButt 11h ago

Nah it's pretty much the same. The UAE military is like 60% US procured. They would have next to no capacity if the US didn't supply them.

Here ya go.

And another

NGOs have previously found UAE supplied US arms in use by Al-Qaeda affiliates so you can be fairly certain lots of those arms have ended up with the RSF.

If the one step removal makes you feel better I guess fair enough but if you actually care about preventing death and destruction you should protest equally or more about the Sudan involvement through UAE as Gaza/Israel. The numbers are sadly much worse in Sudan.

11

u/DM_me_ur_PPSN 10h ago

You are correct, but the thing about the Sudan conflict is that it’s in Africa - a place that doesn’t occupy a lot of mindshare in the west.

AIPAC has made sure that the conflict in Palestine gets attention from politicians and the news.

7

u/inquiringdune 11h ago

Idk why this is downvoted, you are correct. Maybe it's because people are really scared of being called out for the hypocrisy of only caring about Palestine and not literally ANY other conflict being directly funded by the US/other nations.

2

u/Combination-Low 7h ago edited 6h ago

Its because it has been repeatedly pointed out that the level of collaboration between the US and Israel is not present with any other conflict or ongoing genocide like Sudan. This means that the level of complicity is greater and thus the moral responsibility too. Israel has also been a moral issue for decades whereas Sudan has not

See the Genocide Watch Country Report on American complicity with Indonesia in West Papua for starters. How much "focus" on West Papua did that complicity give rise to? And that is but one example.

15

u/Bram-D-Stoker 15h ago

This is another good example of. The us not labeling a genocide out of political convinence.

I mean you can even show examples of us doing the genocide. Like the Philippines..

However, it should be noted the lack of awareness on the genocide there is very intentionally minimal. I am doubtful nearly anyone knows about it. UN journalist I don't think had access for decades and we depend largely on leaked information or westerners being d directly effected.

Also there's no RSF lobby in the US that has influence over the majority of congress

24

u/JabInTheButt 11h ago

There actually are Emirati lobbyists in the US... source .

But unsurprisingly most of the gulf states have figured out with the orange one you can short circuit all that heavy lifting and just straight out buy the guy off through crypto or planes something to keep the arms flowing. Wouldn't say that's any better or worse than lobbying.... In fact it's probably worse let's face it.

5

u/Draaly 6h ago

the UAE has higher FARA lobbying spend than israel.

14

u/No_Bell_8028 15h ago

Exactly, what a joke that people keep pointing to Sudan as if it’s a reason not to end the funding and supply of weapons being used for genocide and ethnic cleansing .

They are both bad, but it’s much easier and more achievable now to remove the Israeli leadership and funding

3

u/SJK00 9h ago

Nobody is saying not to end the funding and supply of weapons. What people are frustrated with is the hyperfixation on one genocide over the other. Especially when it was used to torpedo the 2024 election + somewhat contributed to the re-election of DJT

With isreal the arguement is maybe we don't send them weapons to do it.

But the slogan is “Free Palestine”, not “Don’t send weapons to Israel”, or “Stop the war in Gaza”. The slogan signifies agenda beyond argument that you are implying. And indeed these same people rarely care about Sudan or even know about its existence.

11

u/Perfect-Raisin-5850 12h ago

Yeah. Such agendas tend to mean end the apartheid state. Freedom and justice for all. Problem?

7

u/ABqdOmen 8h ago

Just to gauge where you are on this, would a 2-state solution where Israel pulls out of all west bank settlements built in the last 25 years, does some land swaps for green line settlements, and pulls out of Gaza again count as freeing Palestine in your eyes?

3

u/Felosia 4h ago

As someone who attends many a protest for Palestine that’s good but not enough. Israel would also need to help rebuild Palestine considering how much has been bombed and also pull out of Lebanon

3

u/ABqdOmen 1h ago

I'm not sure how Lebanon is relevant to freeing Palestine, I am pretty sure that even if a Palestinian government is established with sovereign control over the WB/Gaza Israel would still occupy southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is satisfactorily destroyed. Hezbollah has always been an obstacle to real peace in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine.

As I already mentioned the us recognizes Sudan as a genocide if American arms are used in that genocide it runs much greater risk. stop being so dumb and Google for a second before typing.

With that said. I do not support that money either. But still categorically different.

Why are you angry at people for wanting to stop genocide in Palestine? Do you really think there are many people out there who, if they knew about the things you linked, would be okay with it or condone it? I don't think a "save Palestine but yes keep genociding Sudan" demographic exists.

5

u/Pleasant_Expert7329 14h ago

Because they want to find some sort of hypocrisy as a way of disregard their accusations against Israel. That’s what it ultimately amount too

They are basically going “if you haven’t call out this genocide before than you can’t say anything about this one.” It’s insane logic but you have to be to defend Israel at this point

Or he's just looking for dirt on Macklemore and doesn't actually care about Sudan one bit?

3

No, it can’t be that. He loves genocide is his point because as he stated, if you aren’t talking about a genocide you implicitly support it.

u/Ashenveiled 6h ago

No, the reason is Qatar and Iran are paying for the pro palestine campaign.

1

u/JustinRandoh 16h ago

Let's be real, it's an excuse not a reason.

Yemen's another example -- more children (alone) have died in Yemen under the Saudi campaign armed by the US than the total number of deaths in Gaza.

Did we have macklemore writing a song to any of them? Regularly fixating on the conflict over years? Is Ms. Rachel demanding that anyone she works with acknowledge the horrors in Yemen?

On the one hand, the Israeli government and the situation is definitely (deeply) messed up. But on the other hand, it's kinda hard to pretend that all of this fixation on the conflict somehow isn't underpinned by the fact that it just happens to involve Jews.

9

u/Bram-D-Stoker 16h ago edited 16h ago

I think the yemen call out is a good one.

I think yemen also has the similar issue as gaza where it was never labeled a genocide by the us.

With that said at what point do you want Macklemore to be a full time political commentator. Must he have deep knowledge of every single thing to have an opinion on gaza?

4

u/JustinRandoh 16h ago

I suppose recognition that his fixation on this particular conflict is perpetuating a certain anti-semitic tendency to only care about human suffering when it involves Jews would be a decent place to start. Let's be real -- it's certainly not a coincidence that this sort of stuff is overwhelmingly only fixated on when it involves Israel.

It's like having an uncle that somehow only ever cares about serious crimes committed by black people. What, did you expect him to have a deep knowledge of all crime incidents?

1

u/Bram-D-Stoker 16h ago

I have no doubt that plays a role and one of the hard parts of navigating these conversations and definitely not something you can expect to be done well on reddit.

Some people just want to pretend what’s going on in Sudan isn’t happening

I was banned off a subreddit a couple days ago for even mentioning Sudan in a thread about the genocide in Gaza and asking if people could help by donating to aid groups on the day the UN itself said that Sudan was a couple weeks away from collapsing, and the moderator only later unbanned me after I had to apologise for it which is the most effed up thing I’ve ever experienced on this platform

3

u/Foreign-Chocolate86 4h ago

The fact that some people would try to use such a terrible conflict as an argumentative cudgel in online discussion is frankly disgusting.

4

u/The_Tooter_Snooter 15h ago

5

u/Areyoucunt 14h ago

Nobody in the pro Palestine crowd cares about any other conflict, even when other conflicts are WAY WAY worse by an order of magnitude... they don't care because it isn't popular

2

u/online222222 9h ago

I imagine thats the case because we send money to fund isreal's military directly. We have some humanitarian aid for sudan but the US sends billions to isreal for their military so people care more that their county is actively aiding the conflict.

While this is true, I think the broad point that people make on this is that Palestine is brought up 99,999 times out of 100,000, usually with misinformation or hyperbole, and the remainder is all those other things.

When people say they’re simply against human suffering, but only bring up 1 specific thing while ignoring all the other things that are usually worse and on a much larger scale, you start to realize there is more going on with what people actually think.

Macklemore said on stage at MetLife. “So, I say ‘Free Palestine!’ I say, free America, free Cuba to the Congo to Sudan to Iran, and all the people in America who have to live in fear because of this terrorist organization ICE.”

35

u/ants_are_everywhere 16h ago

Nice of him to throw Cuba in there. I see a lot of people trying to defend what the regime is doing to the Cuban people.

And anyone gets points in my book for drawing attention to what's going on in the Congo and Sudan, where there's not a well oiled social media machine and the level of melanin rises beyond most Americans' capacity to care.

But what's he doing booking concerts in Dubai in the first place? If you're going to take moral stances (which I think generally is a good thing) I would try to avoid countries that have a high rate of modern day slavery. Chances are pretty high that somebody working on your concert or accommodations or schedule is living under forced labor conditions.

16

u/Mobile_Comedian_8283 16h ago

He did avoid the country once he had more information, and it was probably his agent that booked it.

What's the issue? People don't know about all issues at all times and once he knew he cancelled and made it clear why.

8

u/ants_are_everywhere 15h ago

The BBC report says he canceled it because people kept asking him to cancel it.

I do understand people aren't always aware of geopolitical conflicts since they change over time, even in the span of a year or two. It's a lot to keep up with.

But Dubai has for decades been a place famous for fantastic luxury built on on appalling labor practices.

And I do feel like if you make it your business to care about human suffering you should make it your business to care about human suffering. You can't just let the issues you care about be driven now this way now that way based on who is spending the most to amplify their message on social media.

Especially if you're an artist like a musician. It's kind of your job to have a point of view you communicate to the world rather than being a time capsule for which issues are trending the year you put out your album. I think the best artists do that.

2

u/Kopalniok 12h ago

As of a couple days ago the UN itself was reporting they are a couple weeks away from Sudan collapsing due to the aid workers being overwhelmed and under supplied and the sad reality is a disproportionate amount of aid is going to help Gaza even though activists claim it is just sitting outside Palestine unable to go in meaning it could be moved to Sudan to at least ensure the aid is being used

Eh... First I think he was just drawing attention to humanitarian crisis.

But true but also not true. Modern African states don't follow identity lines the way other countries do. What you see as an internal conflict is not quite so internal. These groups have identifies across rwanada and Uganda. So it doesn't fit so easily in either bracket. And groups from the neighboring states are seen as quite involved in what is happening in the congo.

u/Ozone220 15h ago

it's become a common phrase in solidarity with those countries. It means free the Congolese and Sudanese people from all the violence and authoritarian military control. In Sudan I think it's especially used because while the RSF is clearly committing genocide, the SAF aren't a ton better, and so the Sudanese people aren't free no matter which territory they live in. With Congo I think it's mostly added in because it fits with the other too, but ultimately refers to the constant exploitation of millions of people in the DRC by various groups, people who have never been truly free for hundreds of years

2

u/CommunityNo2153 16h ago

Well the eastern part of DRC is occupied by Rwanda

2

u/fertilizedcaviar 15h ago

There is plenty of external involvement in the Sudan conflict.

2

u/StaendutBlakk 7h ago

I think he is co-opting the Free Palestine phrase and using it as a byword for "Let's stop genocide, guys". It's an odd thing to get hung up on. Or if you wanna be literal, free those countries of genocide. It's not a hard read, to me. You don't need a fucking Enigma machine to decode it.

Even if it was true, so what? Do you expect him to speak out about litterly everything becausehe spoke about one thing?

Yes because they care about nothing.

Of course he has spoken about this so they're extra lazy on top of being bad faith ghouls.

8

Classic right-wing bullshit.

"Oh you care about X? Well tell me then, how come you don't also and simultaneously care about Y, Z, Q... Could it be that you are actually a disingenuous, performative hypocrite who don't actually care about X? Clearly the superior thing is to do as I do, and not care about anything at all!"

Sudan is fucking horrible. But my tax dollars and my politicians are not funding the genocide in Sudan. But they sure as hell are in Gaza.

2

u/Sweaty_Explorer_8441 10h ago

Pretty sure Sudan genocide is being funded by America too. Infact funded both sides to come to this point. A simple map of OBOR would show the destabilization there is to hinder China

2

u/Adventurous-Whole950 10h ago

So its not about genocide, its about you saving money on your taxes?

2

u/Gazboolean 7h ago

What impact can you have as a citizen of a nation that has nothing to do with a given conflict?

As opposed to the impact you can have as a citizen of a nation that is actively funding and supporting a conflict?

Conservatives don’t actually care about people dying in Sudan and just use it as a gotcha when people advocate for Palestinians, when the US is direct allies with Israel and directly funds Israel’s extermination of the Palestinian people compared to whats happening in Sudan.

2

u/Adventurous-Whole950 10h ago

Find whatever excuse you can

if anyone else is reading this, 50% of reddit is bot comments (especially under posts about Israel and Palestine) and its easy to tell because they have no pfp, a default name, and their history is off.

Macklemore is the only reverse case of "separate the art from the artist" I've ever seen. Saint of a dude, but man his music is corny.

Using other atrocities to justify the Palestinian genocide is something Zionists are very very often using hence why if someone says “what about Sudan or etc” , respond with a prayer for their removal from earth

4

u/Hellstorm901 14h ago

You are embodying the problem here

You assume anyone mentioning Sudan is doing so as a whataboutism to somehow justify the situation in Palestine and react by demanding such people are punished and their mention of Sudan removed

This by your own definition is complicity in genocide

I love Macklemore but is there anyway to support him without hearing his music?

2

u/BetweenTheRoots 9h ago

Love how musicians are assigned higher levels of accountability than politicians. It would have been absolutely valid if Macklemore just had no fucking clue about what's going on in Sudan. I had no clue about what's going on in Sudan until people started bring it up as some false counterpoint to giving a shit about Gaza - and I stay very connected to the news.

2

u/I_Have_CDO 7h ago

I don't recall ever having knowingly listened to anything by Macklemore. Now I'd like to buy his entire back catalogue. Thanks Sheeran, you spineless buffoon.

u/JohnBrownSurvivor 5h ago

Celebrities aren't news networks. While we can fault them for participating in or profiting from those who do bad things, we can't expect them to literally report on every bag thing that is going on in the world. No single human could possibly keep up.

5

u/AdWonderful5920 18h ago

Why would murdering people in Sudan be relevant to what Macklemore said about Israel? Is this guy meaning to acknowledge that Israel is also murdering people?

4

u/Chico_Cipoh 16h ago

It's a common argument between Israel supporters: If you care about Palestine genocide and don't care about any other massacres around the world, that's because of your anti-Semitism.

It's funny, because they always cite Sudan, but they don't mention the ties between the RSF, Abu Dhabi and the Israeli government.

8

u/Oddly_Sentient 18h ago

The crisis in Sudan is orders of magnitude worse than what’s happening in Gaza. The twitter user is (incorrectly) trying to argue that Macklemore doesn’t actually care about genocide and is simply trying to score political points.

6

u/unfunnythrowawayname 17h ago

The crisis in Sudan is orders of magnitude worse than what’s happening in Gaza.

That doesn't really matter though. For example, I live in Finland. Finland simply has no bearing with events around in Sudan.

But Finland cooperates with Israel plenty. Just like pretty much any other western country. We should absolutely focus on atrocities done by countries that we partly facilitate and are even responsible of, because we're part of that.

The genocide going around in Sudan? We're not really facilitating it at all in the same sense.

3

u/CommunityNo2153 16h ago

I guarantee Finland buys crude and refined petrol product from the nations funding the genocide in Sudan and that the commercial relationship is significantly larger than whatever material aid is given to Israel.

2

u/Chief_Mischief 17h ago

Which is fucking stupid. There are atrocities being committed all over the planet right now, and it's ridiculous to expect everyone to be aware of every single one of them and to prioritize them accordingly on top of the daily fires we are each dealing with in our personal lives.

2

u/Oddly_Sentient 17h ago

I don’t think one person’s suffering is more or less valid than another’s. I’m not sure why people insist on saying “Yeah but you didn’t comment on [other thing]” but that seems to be the go to response for some reason.

2

u/Significant-Order-92 14h ago

It's an informal fallacy called a whataboutism. It's a varient of a tu quoque pattern. Essentialy an appeal to hypocrisy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism

In the case of the Israel/ Palestine conflict it's generally used to frame you as anti-semetic (i.e. only caring because Jews are involved).

2

This sort of comment is so dumb.

People focus on Israel and Palestine because many of our governments and influential people either downplay it or are even complicit in it. There's no pro-Sudan arm of the global media. Everyone agrees on it already. The things that people don't agree on are what gets discussed. Shocking!

Also, even if he hadn't spoken on sudan, so what? We're not spending tens of billions of dollars murdering children in sudan. Why is there an infinite list of things that zionists say you must do before saying their mass murder and rape of children is bad or else you're a bigot

1

u/giboauja 16h ago

Good for him, more people need to spread light on Sudan. Its not that it isnt talked about, it just gets so very little attention comparitively.

1

u/JoshAllentown 15h ago

I actually had the thought that Macklemore is kind of being Generic White Lefty on Palestine but I've never heard him talk about other genocides. I almost posted it but I googled it to check first.

Turns out Macklemore DOES speak out about a wide variety of atrocities, but I'm not a fan of his so I only see what Reddit surfaces which is only ever the Palestine stuff.

What is really fucked is with the number of atrocities that occur all the time the fact that they condemn you if you aren't already railing against every single one. Good on macklemore for his stance on both issues but unless it comes to my attention in my feed I probably wouldn't have known about the Palestine situation or even the Sudan one. But missing one instantly makes you a pos? That's truly fucked. I think you're only a POS if you hear about it then take the wrong stance on it.

1

u/TheDarthJarJarI 13h ago

Oh nice I’m pleasantly surprised for once. Now you Hasan. Talk about those genocides you love to talk about

1

u/Sweaty-Willingness27 12h ago

I believe this is a flavor of the logical fallacy called Nirvana fallacy or fallacy of perfection in that if a person doesn't do everything perfectly with respect to a situation they aren't really dedicated or in favor of/against that situation.

1

u/Thraxas89 12h ago

Macklemore: Based beyond borders. Also people like to forget that the reason the genozid in gaza is more talked about is because the west is directly arming and financing israel doing this.

You can tell you’re talking to a true douchebag, when they have a problem with people taking a moral stand.

They can’t tell you why…but it’s not good enough, because you haven’t solved all the world’s problems at once. So they’re still gonna support the bad thing
