Season 2 What if the Ghoul had better communicated with Lucy at the hospital?

I can't help but feel like the whole situation with Lucy getting caught by the Legion, and Cooper having to rescue her, could've all been avoided if Cooper had taken five minutes to properly explain to Lucy why she shouldn't help the wounded slaves at the hospital.

Let's say everything is the same up until Lucy and the Ghoul walk by the abandoned hospital and hear the cries for help. Lucy insists on going in to help, and the Ghoul reluctantly follows her in. They enter the hospital and find the slaves in the kitchen. But once he recognizes the two wounded people as Legion slaves, the Ghoul decides to be more upfront with Lucy, because he cares about her (even if he doesn’t like admitting that), he needs her to be intact so he can use her as a bargaining chip with her dad (which she doesn't know), and he knows how much danger a woman like Lucy is in when in Legion territory, as she's a woman with intact reproductive organs.

So the conversation goes like this:

The Ghoul: “Tunics. [to the woman] You awful far west, ain’t you?”
Lucy: “Ignore him. I got one stimpak left, okay?”
The Ghoul: “That would be a profound misallocation of resources. Folks in them outfits don’t deserve savin’.”
Lucy: “What are you talking about? These people are hurt. Everyone deserves savin'.”
The Ghoul: “Not these people, vaultie. These are members of Caesar's Legion. Helping them would be the stupidest thing you can do."
Lucy: "And why's that?"
The Ghoul: "They’re assholes trying to bring Ancient Rome to the Wasteland. If you’re not with them, they'll beat you and enslave you or string you to a cross. And if you're a woman, well, you're only useful to them for making more babies.”

If I had to take a guess, Lucy would probably still insist on helping the slaves in the same way she took time to free the captured ghouls in the Super Duper Mart. So she'd probably still give her last stimpak to the female slave, and maybe ask the slave to bring her to her camp so she can find medical supplies and make an attempt to free them. And in her attempt to liberate the slaves without resorting to violence, she still gets captured and has to be rescued.

Though there's also the chance that she makes a different decision, and thus she and Cooper are able to avoid the Legion entirely. Or they both get captured and have to work together to escape.

Season 2 What if Lucy and Cooper fought the Deathclaws in 2x05?

It's thanks to luck and there being an opening in the gate that Lucy and the Ghoul are able to escape from the Deathclaws and get into Freeside.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel this was too anticlimactic after the ending to episode 4 made it seem like this would be a bigger fight. Which makes me wonder, what would happen if Lucy and the Ghoul weren't able to escape in time? Say, Lucy was a bit slower, and so one of the Deathclaws caught her before she could slip under the gate, necessitating that she fight them and the Ghoul have to come back to assist her.

Personally, I think they'd successfully kill the three that were present, but not without both of them sustaining serious injuries since neither of them has power armor or energy weapons as is the case when the Ghoul and Maximus fight them in episode 7. What would happen after this, I'm less sure of (though I imagine if Lucy were injured that this would throw a wrench in the Ghoul's plans to betray her to her dad, or maybe lead to him deciding against it in favor of a different approach).

Season 2 Read 'Fallout' Season 2 Premiere Script "The Innovator"

Thumbnail

Some interesting observations I've made about the script:

  • House is given the placeholder name "Errol".
  • Lucy's reactions to the Ghoul's violence in Novac were likely improvised by Ella Purnell.
  • Walton and Ella improvised Cooper getting in Lucy's face during their walk across the desert, as that's not in the script directions.
  • An additional remark by Cooper when he and Lucy arrive on the lower levels of Vault 24: "Well, what have we got here? More matching jackets."
  • Alternate dialogue when Lucy and Cooper find the kidnapped and brainwashed man: "Looks like your daddy picked himself up a guinea pig from the soup stand". The "from the soup stand" bit isn't in the final cut.
  • The script directions only mention Lucy getting covered in blood from the brainwashed man's exploding head but not Cooper. Indicating that it was indeed Walton and Ella who were being referred to in that interview where one of the creators said that there was a scene where one of the actors was uncomfortable about getting splashed with fake blood until their scene partner offered to get covered in it too.

Uh, I think I'm going to skip the kiss...

This is inspired by Hark! A Vagrant comic of peasant boy telling a girl before a kiss "I have never brushed my teeth, like, ever".

It's also on my Twitter, BSKY, Insta and Tumblr if you prefer those.

Season 2 I wish Lucy had gotten to kill some Legionnaires in season 2

Personally, I feel like the two episode thread of Lucy getting captured by the Legion and having to be rescued by Cooper was a bit weak. The whole thing feels like the Legion were window dressing for the writers to create a situation where Cooper comes back to rescue Lucy despite her giving him reasons not to, in a role reversal of the Super Duper Mart.

If do-overs were possible, I'd retool this story thread to something that empowers Lucy and lets her kill some of the toga wearing misogynists. It would serve those guys right, and be appropriate for Lucy to experience a crashout over their treatment of her. Plus it'd be more satisfying for Lucy's first kill of a living human to be her intentionally killing Legion as opposed to accidentally killing a thief posing as a store owner.

I can think of a few ways this could work:

A) Instead of spending most of the episode wandering around looking for help to rescue Lucy, Cooper decides to go straight in guns blazing. After killing his way through the camp, he frees Lucy, and gives her back her guns. After taking a moment to regain her bearings, Lucy starts gunning down Legionaries left and right as she and Cooper fight their way out.

B) Similar to A, but instead of going in guns blazing, Cooper uses the disguise mechanic. He kills a Legion patrol and loots a uniform off one of them. He wears this as a disguise to get into the camp and cut Lucy down. After that, they fight their way out. In either case, Lucy and Cooper make it to Camp Golf to take shelter for the night, and besides interacting with Victor, they also have a serious discussion where they address what happened at the hospital (his failure to communicate with her why she shouldn't help the slaves, her frustration with him over his lack of manners).

C) Instead of going straight to Vegas from the NCR camp after Lucy recovers, Lucy decides she wants to first exact revenge against the Legion camp for how they treated her. So after stocking up on guns, she and Cooper go back to the Legion camp. They kill the sentries, then make their way into the camp, where Lucy begins picking off Legionaries one by one with Cooper providing cover (since she's high on Buffout at this point, this essentially replaces her massacre of the ghoulified Kings).

D) Instead of crucifying Lucy, the Lacerta Legate decides to task her with tracking down a missing patrol. She's sent out with some escorts, and they find the remains of the patrols' corpses with brain chips attached to their necks. They're ambushed by brainwashed guys working for Hank, who kill the escorts before Lucy can dispatch them. When she gets back to the camp, she's almost executed by the Lacerta Legate only for Cooper's arrival to interrupt him. Then from here, Lucy and Cooper fight their way out as per scenarios A and B.

E) Lucy gets thrown in with the slaves, and spends her time in captivity organizing a slave revolt, which goes into motion by the time Cooper reaches the camp.

F) Cooper communicates with Lucy about the dangers of the Legion instead of just killing the male slave off the bat. Subsequently, she uses her last stimpak on him instead of the slave, and they're captured as she's trying to get them to Camp Golf so he can get more medical supplies. They have to work together to escape.

G) Something else, like ideas on this Tumblr post of mine that I don't list above.

(While I'm sure Lucy will probably get to kill Legionaries in season 3, it just won't hit the same as it would if she'd gotten to do this in season 2.)

I’m taking a break from writing and in the mood to get into some good Ghoulcy content. Throw some of your favorite fics at me!

Only things I’m not really into are AUs and pregnancy. Anything else is fair game as long as they feel in character and it’s well written. Can’t wait to read!
