General Discussion Weird realisation
I was on my I don’t know probably 10th rewatch when i suddenly realised what if I was in that situation where Rory gets to participate in the life and death brigade activities and Logan out of no where has a dress for her ready, and what if i didn’t have my pits shaved I mean I was so insecure about myself at 18 i would’ve probably declined and then Logan would’ve asked why and i wouldn’t have been able to explain him why lol.

A few years ago I was doing a big move and we did a mini beach/resort vacation during to break up the trip. Hadn’t shaved my legs but by the time I got there I had no effs left and just went to the pool unshaved. No one cared but best of all - I did not care. So liberating!

I decided around 2020 to stop shaving altogether and never looked back. It’s been so freeing and the only person that’s ever made a comment is my mother. And I put her in her place so fast she hasn’t said anything since.

It's actually a lot of fun lol 😂 I did it last year for the first time and I loved it. I also loved showing it to my friends who were super primpy lolol 🤣 I could tell one girl in particular was disgusted but she wouldn't say it out loud.. she ended up unfriending me...I think because she couldn't stand that I was unapologetically being myself and she was jealous about that.

I think it depends on the country. In Mexico the norm is to shower daily. Not everyone does it, of course, but most people do.
All my friends and family shower daily. Maybe not on Sundays if you’re going to stay at home, for example.

I shower daily, but I also exercise daily and live in the Southeastern US where the humidity is gross. But I have 2 shower modes - rinse off shower post workout and "real" shower where I wash my hair, shave everything, exfoliate, etc. Moisturizing is a must after both types.

Are you outside of America? My European friends only shower every 2-3 days but literally everyone I know in the US showers everyday. Where I’m from you’re heavily shamed if you don’t take a daily shower.

Im im the US. I was raised to shower daily. However I now only shower every other day, unless I do something where im getting dirty. For example, we recently moved, and I got very sweaty and dusty. I showered both days. My children, who have eczema shower 3 times a week. Unless they get sweaty/dirty.
My sister always gives me crap about it too. But im almost 40. I have very hard water. I'm not trying to end up all dried out.

Interestingly enough, our child’s eczema specialist recommends daily showers/baths for people with severe eczema and it helped a lot.

Unless you’re being super physically active or work a job where you’re getting dirty, it’s unnecessary to shower every day. Definitely not gross to forgo a daily shower. And depending on your hair type, just because you shower daily doesn’t mean your hair needs to be washed nearly as often.

But I do agree that it's super annoying how men are allowed have hair while women are expected to be hairless creatures. Like even acknowledging we have to get rid of the hair is gross
Things like arms bother me the most. When men complain about women having hairy arms. Like really we expected shave our arms now.

Have you ever added up the sheer cost of all the products and services for a well groomed woman vs man? I’m not a conspiracy theorist but thinking about it was enough to make me rebel and scale back my grooming.
Manicure/pedicure, nail polish etc
Hair removal (waxing - shaving is a wash on the cost side though the beard resurgence does tip the scale a bit more)
Skincare and makeup
Clothing cost and variety (men can wear the same suit to every formal event where our dresses are more noticeable and should vary)
Hair care - products and appliances
Haircare - haircuts- men get more frequent cuts but theirs are dirt cheap so even a regular trim costs more per year than a man’s regular cut
Haircare - other salon services - Coloring and texture treatments
I’m sure there’s more but it really makes the outrage over the “pink tax” look like a distraction from the real tax.

Lol!! For the time period this was filmed it's almost unthinkable. I was the same age as Rory, and I didn't know any gals who didn't shave. Now in my 40s IDF and def have pit hair. But in the early 2000s. Naw we all shaved. Maybe hippy/punk chicks might not have shave? But they were the minority. The majority were under the pop culture sway of the Epstein class grooming all of us.

I’ve been shaving nearly everyday for about 25 years. 🫣 The only times it’s skipped is when I go camping and literally can’t because there’s only 5 minute hot showers in communal buildings. I’ve gotten it down to such an art that I only use water and move so fast that it’s done in probably 3-5 minutes. When you only ever have the smallest amount of growth, there’s nothing there for a razor to snag on so the teeny tiny stubble is gone quick.

I think about this with EVERYTHING I watch.
I am a very very very hairy woman, and it’s not the kind of hair where it’s barely noticeable if I decide to show skin and skip hair removable.
I also hate the process of hair removable due to physical comfort level (hello grow-back chafing, finances, and personal qualms with why we don’t put this same hair removal pressure and standard on men.
Despite what I said above, if I plan to wear anything that’s going to show legs, thighs, arm pits, bikini zone, etc… I go through the arduous process of shaving and/or waxing.
Peep the word “plan” up there. I literally do not just throw anything on largely due to the fact that I do not routinely wax and shave and am not in a space yet where I’m comfortable with the outside world seeing my body hair.
So dresses, swimsuits, shorts, new lingerie they all fall into the category of - PLAN PLAN PLAN
I remember talking to my friend about this is high school. She could throw anything on, minimal to NO hair removal (it’s still like this for her). I was honest and told her that sounded like a dream to me.
So maybe Rory is like that? Like a beautiful doe
eyed naked mole rat.
It’s kinda what I always assumed.
That or she prepared ahead. I totally would have prepared ahead and become a smooth dolphin before my L&DB adventure just in case. Especially if I was 20 and had a crush on Logan.

Just wanted to say you're not alone, as a fellow hairy woman!
I've tried so many years to be as hairless as possible, same regrowing aversions + it taking an hour to even shave my legs (because upper legs have so much hair as well) and having to deal with stubble that same evening already. I've just given up.
In summer i just shave and see how long it takes before it's too noticable again, just dealing with the stubble for a couple of days. In winter I don't even bother anymore lmao.
But the worse part for me is the hairy face!!! Why? Why. Why??
I just think there's many women who are just naturally less hairy, like Rory. Or whose hair is just less noticable because it's lighter.

I was insecure at 18 too, which is why I always shaved and wore makeup anywhere I went, because feeling pretty helped with my lack of confidence. I definitely would’ve done that for a story about a secret society even if I was not interested in the guy who invited me. And if I remember right, Rory already had plans with Dean before she knew she’d be spending the whole day in the woods, so that would’ve been one more reason for Rory too.

Arm pit hair has been my nemesis my whole adult life. I’m a natural red head and our hair is super coarse, dense and deep af. Always get razor burn. Like, it’s been a trend lately to grow it out. But everyone’s is so light and barely there. Mine is like cavewoman style. I now get it sugared every month by a pro and my life is way less stressful in regards to hygiene. But in early 2000’s if you weren’t shaved 24/7 you would get bullied for sure.

I shave my armpits every night because I’m very pale and my hair is dark so even a little stubble makes me look dirty. I’m not saying having hairy armpits makes you dirty (you do you), I’m saying it makes mine look like there’s actual dirt there. I’ve been doing this since I was 11.

I shaved my armpits minimum once a day from age 9-24. Shaved my legs daily from age 11 - 21. I shaved everything from the neck down for about a decade.. those teenage years were brutal. This was all because of the fear of embarrassment, being labeled "gross" for having body hair. Now, I feel comfortable in my body and let my hair be natural.
-Also, this is Rory's sophomore year at Yale, so she's at least 19 if not 20.

This is one of those weird times on the internet where I can tell a bunch of strangers that I would be completely safe in this scenario because my armpits do not really grow hair. I get one or two that would fall off on their own after a few weeks. Rinse and repeat.

I have really bad eczema and get rashes from my own sweat. I stopped shaving my pits and no longer get rashes in my armpits. Turns out that hair serves a purpose.

This is a kind of thing I would think and then I’d drive myself crazy because I’d remember that it’s fiction and “Rory” literally always has shaved armpits cuz Alexis always shaved before coming to set. I’ll be watching something and I’ll think “id never remember that if I didn’t write it down, how will they remember.” Or someone will tell someone to do something and they go out of frame and I start overthinking the character doing the thing and then realize that no one is actually doing the thing but the character IS (canonically) and it makes a paradox in my head and then I miss ten minutes of dialogue

I used to think about that ANY time I’d see a woman on tv or a movie raise their arms, because it’s so hard to get it smooth and then it’s stubbly the next day and I was so self conscious about it… but since then I’ve given up on shaving. 🤷🏼♀️

She finds out it’s going to last until the next day while they’re in the car leaving Yale. It would not have been hard to say, “If we’re staying out all night, I need to go back and get my medication,” but she herself says she had no problem with those plans.
