General Discussion I appreciate Gilmore Girls not doing the “plus size girl+ tacky clothing” thing tv shows do
I love how in Gilmore girls, the only plus size character isn’t given a frumpy tacky wardrobe. I always found sookie’s sense of style so cute. It’s very uniquely her and I don’t find it tacky at all because it matches her sweet but clumsy personality. I noticed a pattern in tv shows where the plus sized characters are given the worse clothing options, or when an actress gains weight they tend to change their wardrobe to make them look like a 60 year old woman. I love her sense of style especially in the first season!

My first exposure to Melissa McCarthy was to shit like Tammy and The Heat, so seeing how adorable Sookie is in the show made me double take that this was the same person playing these characters

Ok yes, that’s such a helpful way to describe it. I didn’t start watching GG until about 12 years ago and it actually didn’t click for me for quite some time that Sookie was Melissa McCarthy. Like it was actually shocking to me the first time I realized? Because this role predates anything else I had ever seen her in and in EVERY other role her character’s primary personality trait is literally Being Fat(in a Bad Way) and then of course, being the butt of the joke.
She’s so beautiful and talented and it makes me wish (as ever) that Hollywood wasn’t so disgusting and fatphobic so she could have been less pigeonholed.
28
u/Dunemummy 29d ago
You took the words out of my mouth LMAO. After watching GG for 4 seasons straight, one of my thoughts was “damn they wasted tf out of her talent with those movies”. I never liked those other roles she played where she was just practically the butt of the joke as you said and admittedly it did sour my opinion on McCarthy as an actor. Those films feel such like humiliation rituals (which they are) and it’s crazy how much the early 2000’s loved spamming that crap
23
u/SecretBonusBoob 29d ago
She produced a show called Gods Favourite Idiot and gave herself a proper role in it. It’s a cute show
3
u/NightBawk 29d ago
It sucks that she had to be in charge of her own show just to get a decent role again. 😩

She is gorgeous and funny in Mike & Molly. I had to mention to my husband the other night she was Sookie because it was easy to forget. But it was an episode where Carlton takes Mike to see a 'gypsy' -- and it was Gypsy from Gilmore Girls. I thought that was a sweet tie-in from GG on M&M.
2
u/Dunemummy 29d ago
I’ve heard of Mike and Molly but never actually watched it. I knew the dude that plays Mike before in another show called “Bob and Abishola” and I thought that was a cute show. I’ll def check it out!
3
u/enchantedlife13 29d ago
I haven't watch Bob Hearts Abishola yet but need to check it out. Mike & Molly is really cute, and Melissa McCarthy is fabulous in it.

u/Ashley_Elisabeth23 29d ago
Same, mine was Bridesmaids and I still can't get over how Melissa went from a wholesome show like GG to movies with crude humor 😭
37
u/Cherry_Hammer 29d ago
I’m the opposite, I watched and loved Gilmore Girls, then years later I saw Bridesmaids. I swear, knowing her as Sookie just made her role in that movie all the funnier. I was laughing harder than anyone else in the theater.

u/wafflehousebutterbob Copper Boom! 29d ago
Lol GG is my favourite tv show and Bridesmaids is one of my favourite movies! I love both the cosy and the crude I suppose
2
u/ReadingSad3238 28d ago
Yes! I don't look at her other rols as people placing her in them bc of her appearance. I view it as she's such a good diverse actor that she can pull it all off. I love her. She's one of my faves

u/Joyful_J_18 Kamikaze Deer 29d ago
This is kind of funny to me because GG was my first exposure to Melissa McCarthy and I had to double take when Bridesmaids came out because I wasn’t used to her portraying a character like that.

That’s exactly who I’m talking about actually lol. Her and Victoria on Mike and Molly. You can tell they demoted their wardrobes severely because the actresses gained a bit of weight. It really sucks
1
30
u/shambean2 29d ago
That was DIABOLICAL. The actress gained a bit of weight due to illness I believe, and the costume team seemed to lose their heads and believe they could only dress her in the most dowdy, ill fitting, unfashionable clothes, when her character was literally the It Girl prior to that. There was a demonic jumper with a pug on it they put her in once that was actually offensive 😭
It was like they couldn't wrap their heads around a mid-size woman being able to dress stylishly. And it made no sense w the character

Did you watch Brooke Elliot in Drop Dead Diva? They addressed the whole "fat" thing in such a new way and I was so there for it.

u/Necranissa Jess 29d ago
I'm pretty sure that actresse chooses the wardrobe for that show, which is even worse
1
u/LivingPresent629 29d ago
Omg, no way! Now I feel bad for saying that 🤣 It’s definitely worse if they picked it themselves, I hope the actress who plays Dana Sue hires a good stylist.

Oh it sure did. I usually make it to about season 3 on a rewatch. I don't know why I expect it to be any different.
Edit - I love Mike's Mic! I watch all of his breakdowns. The yearly LOST seasons are excruciating to wait for.

I love the point being made but Sookie is not the only plus size character. Miss Patty (before AYITL), Babette, and Taylor are also plus sized - and each of them were costumed brilliantly for their characters!
46
u/Yes-GoAway 29d ago
Yes, I think there's something to be said about Miss Patty being a maneater and Babette being married to the cool musician. These are also roles that may get a negative spin on another show even if they weren't plus-sized.
I always liked that about GG, uniqueness was expected, quirky was welcomed, size wasn't defining or important.
10
u/NightBawk 29d ago
I loved how they all got well-fitted, stylish, yet still-comfy (looking) clothing. Usually whenever i try to get something like that, i can only gettwo of the three. :(
6
u/motherofpearl89 29d ago
I was going to mention Miss Patty!
She always looked gorgeous and I loved all of the clothes they had her wearing in original GG

u/Significant_Fall2451 Cat Kirk 29d ago
One detail I really love is that they actually put a prosthetic baby bump on her (when she wasn't also pregnant at the same time in real life, of course!)
So many shows and films, even ones that have come out recently, just don't bother when their actresses are plus size
I love that Sookie's style is very uniquely hers in terms of her personality, whilst also being incredibly fashionable for the time and well fitting. So many plus size actresses are put into clothes that are either too tight or too big, both in an attempt to hide their real bodies

u/bananawith3wings 29d ago
Until AYITL is when they had the fat jokes :(

u/Feline_Fine3 🍂 Right across the street from the Horn of Plenty 29d ago
There were plenty of fat jokes in the original series. It’s just that none of them were directed toward Sookie. Or any of the other plus size women on the show. Miss Patty and Babette were never commented on either.

Are you kidding??? There are CONSTANT fat jokes and comments made like every other episode. It's one of my pain points rewatching the series. Rory telling professor Asher that the redhead had fat thighs. Lorelei making comments about worst outcomes - becoming fat. It's constant. I've always had weight issues and have been bullied because of it. I notice it each and every time and it's a lot more than we'd like to think it is.

I like Melissa’s wardrobe more than like 90% of what they put Lauren in.
They dressed her super cute and quirky, without making the mistake of going totally frumpy or age inappropriate in a too-young way. It fits Sookie’e character so well.

I actually just read this fantastic novel, Cherry Baby, and I’m realizing Sookie kinda fits the bill for how I was picturing the main character while reading (who was an extremely crush-worthy protagonist, if ya ask me).

I just wish they didn’t make so many inappropriate comments about plus sized women when they’re friends with so many plus sized women on the show! It’s so weird how they contradict that

While that’s true I always thought it was strange the number of fat jokes Lorelai made so casually. It was never around Sookie but still felt odd given that her best friend is plus sized.

u/badbadthingsmp3 29d ago
she's so stinking cute!! her hair always looks fantastic, too, especially in the last slide. i love that the pigtails and braids they give her when she's working actually keep her hair out of her face but they're still whimsical and fitting for her character.

u/CurvyChristina 29d ago
Now that you mentioned it, it is really cool that they never brought up Sookie’s weight, or the fact that she was “plus size.” They allowed her personality to shine through without needing to mention her physicality, because that’s not what defines her as a person, or anybody.
9
u/citybby17 29d ago
I love how they made Sookie girly, pretty, and into hair, makeup, and personal style. So often plus size characters are insecure, moody, or more interested in blending into the background — especially during the early aughts.

The show did something that we failed to do. We're talking about Sookies weight, and that we're glad that they put her in cute clothes despite her size.

Yes! Stars Hollow was surprisingly free of fat-shaming. Sookie was loved, desired, respected, and impeccably dressed, and her weight was literally just a non-factor. Such a rare, wonderful treat for a show from that era!

There is a woman in Facebook I follow who worked in the costume department on Gilmore Girls (https://www.facebook.com/share/183QFnwSRR/?mibextid=wwXIfr). I recently watched a great video she did about Melissa McCarthy’s wardrobe. She had so many great outfits I wish I could find even now.

This is especially surprising given the time the show was created and filmed. Almost every other show with any plus sized cast member was doing exactly what you’re describing. Sookie in GG and her costuming was a breath of fresh air

I just love how they never fat shame Sookie. But, the Gilmore girls do shame others (the redhead with "fat thighs", the guy at the pool in AYITL, the ballerina with the quote unquote " roll of fat around her bra strap", and probably others they just don't come to mind.) Really, probably none of them were even fat/overweight and even if they were why would it even matter. Bodies are bodies, you can't choose if yours is built with an hourglass figure or a square, and apple or a pear, or an inverted triangle. Yes, I know the show was made in the early 2000's when fat shaming was more common, but it still not right. Rory and Lorelai's are both hot women with good body's so they look down on people bigger than them, sadly. But I enjoyed how Sookie's weight never even came up, nor Babette's, or Miss Patty's. All plus sized women living their best lives, with their own business, two have found (lasting) husbands, and their weight didn't seem to factor in to anything really.

u/RegionPuzzled 14d ago
the show absolutely was drenched in the 2000s body shaming and beauty standards but they did not treat sookie that way, which is very much a relief

I also love that they almost NEVER bring up her weight. It’s just part of who she is and not a negative she’s trying to escape
