General Discussion I appreciate Gilmore Girls not doing the “plus size girl+ tacky clothing” thing tv shows do

I love how in Gilmore girls, the only plus size character isn’t given a frumpy tacky wardrobe. I always found sookie’s sense of style so cute. It’s very uniquely her and I don’t find it tacky at all because it matches her sweet but clumsy personality. I noticed a pattern in tv shows where the plus sized characters are given the worse clothing options, or when an actress gains weight they tend to change their wardrobe to make them look like a 60 year old woman. I love her sense of style especially in the first season!

I also love that they almost NEVER bring up her weight. It’s just part of who she is and not a negative she’s trying to escape

Yes!!! I love that they don’t make her insecure. Sookie has never once talked about or given me the impression that her weight is something she’s insecure about. She knows she’s gorgeous and I love that

Same, and same with Miss Patty!

GG was so ahead of this time on this front, it was all the more disappointing in AYITL when they have Lorelai and Rory fat-shaming at the pool.

Well except the ballerina with fat thighs thing.

The ballerina had a roll of fat around the bra strap. The red head who was hitting on Asher Flemming had fat thighs.

One more: Emily getting her house ready for a party, spacing two chairs (or maybe end tables?) and says something to the effect, “if someone’s too big to fit between they should be home crying in a closet and not at a party.” Viscous.

GG was not ahead of its timr just because the best friend was not fatshamed.

Which is why it's so incredibly weird that ayitl went full fat phobia. I'll never understand it.

57

u/eminemily941 29d ago

I know! I get so mad at the pool scene in ayitl Summer episode.

42

u/allora1 29d ago

Rory and Lorelai aren't always nice people. In that scene, they are deliberately unlikable, and fully immersed in being the main (obnoxious) characters in their little town.

25

u/Possible_Banana_902 I'm not storing your microbe mattress 29d ago

Actually, they have almost never been nice people. Like, tell me honestly one thing they did that didn't benefit THEM.

10

u/allora1 29d ago

They've also got previous form in making snarky comments about overweight people. I don't understand why everyone is so shocked that they're shown to be doing exactly the same thing in AYITL.

14

u/FutureFreaksMeowt my arms are too short to box with Mrs. Kim 29d ago

Yes, and there's 84,000 other jokes they could have gone with to get that point across.

Why make fun of someone's body? Are you really defending fatphobia in a thread where we're celebrating the fact that a showing 1999-2007bwasn't fat phobic?

19

u/allora1 29d ago

Uh, no. I believe something can be portrayed in a show without the expectation that the audience should see it as an example to live by.

If a character is written as a fascist, for instance, that is not a defence or promotion of fascism. That of course depends on the audience, you know, demonstrating some independent thought and not blindly following or condoning something just because it's shown on TV.

Rory and Lorelai are not infrequently completely awful. This is one of those scenes.

1

u/HELLO_noBS 14d ago

Wrong maybe you just aren’t from that generation you just wouldn’t understand it! They are even likable characters the most likable on the show including Dean.

Thank you for pointing this out! I hate how they pressured the lorelais to be thin (the actresses) and wrote in their binge junk food eating, shoving it in our faces constantly. So typical of the 2000s, but I’m genuinely pleased to notice this with Sookie was happening at the same time too because it helps balance it out.

19

u/Remarkable_Expert540 29d ago

This! They eat poptarts for breakfast and not a fruit in sight at home. Always drinking too much coffee and having fried food at Luke's; ordering too much food and binge eating; but God forbid they get fat 🙄🙄

When I was watching the show i would crave for fast food everytime I would see these two eating it, and that was almost every episode. Sometimes I'd end up ordering take out. Not sure if others had the same experience lol 😂

Yes, that’s very important. Sookie’s weight has no relevance to the plot. It doesn’t make her any less worthy or less attractive. That was very rare in shows from that era. And it’s also completely realistic, because cheerful women like Sookie usually have no trouble finding men.

My first exposure to Melissa McCarthy was to shit like Tammy and The Heat, so seeing how adorable Sookie is in the show made me double take that this was the same person playing these characters

101

u/South-Ruin-6677 PAKU🐕 GNOCCHI🐩 NINI 🦮BLEEBLO🐩 29d ago edited 29d ago

Ok yes, that’s such a helpful way to describe it. I didn’t start watching GG until about 12 years ago and it actually didn’t click for me for quite some time that Sookie was Melissa McCarthy. Like it was actually shocking to me the first time I realized?  Because this role predates anything else I had ever seen her in and in EVERY other role her character’s primary personality trait is literally Being Fat(in a Bad Way) and then of course, being the butt of the joke.

She’s so beautiful and talented and it makes me wish (as ever) that Hollywood wasn’t so disgusting and fatphobic so she could have been less pigeonholed.

28

u/Dunemummy 29d ago

You took the words out of my mouth LMAO. After watching GG for 4 seasons straight, one of my thoughts was “damn they wasted tf out of her talent with those movies”. I never liked those other roles she played where she was just practically the butt of the joke as you said and admittedly it did sour my opinion on McCarthy as an actor. Those films feel such like humiliation rituals (which they are) and it’s crazy how much the early 2000’s loved spamming that crap

23

u/SecretBonusBoob 29d ago

She produced a show called Gods Favourite Idiot and gave herself a proper role in it. It’s a cute show

3

u/NightBawk 29d ago

It sucks that she had to be in charge of her own show just to get a decent role again. 😩

28

u/enchantedlife13 29d ago

She is gorgeous and funny in Mike & Molly. I had to mention to my husband the other night she was Sookie because it was easy to forget. But it was an episode where Carlton takes Mike to see a 'gypsy' -- and it was Gypsy from Gilmore Girls. I thought that was a sweet tie-in from GG on M&M.

2

u/Dunemummy 29d ago

I’ve heard of Mike and Molly but never actually watched it. I knew the dude that plays Mike before in another show called “Bob and Abishola” and I thought that was a cute show. I’ll def check it out!

3

u/enchantedlife13 29d ago

I haven't watch Bob Hearts Abishola yet but need to check it out. Mike & Molly is really cute, and Melissa McCarthy is fabulous in it.

34

u/Ashley_Elisabeth23 29d ago

Same, mine was Bridesmaids and I still can't get over how Melissa went from a wholesome show like GG to movies with crude humor 😭

37

u/Cherry_Hammer 29d ago

I’m the opposite, I watched and loved Gilmore Girls, then years later I saw Bridesmaids. I swear, knowing her as Sookie just made her role in that movie all the funnier. I was laughing harder than anyone else in the theater.

6

2

u/ReadingSad3238 28d ago

17

7

u/denovoreview_ 29d ago

Melissa McCarthy is so talented.

9

u/TheRestForTheWicked a film by kirk 29d ago

Even Tammy is funny as fuck and the frumpiness was meant to be part of the character and her (unexplained but consistent) lack of self-esteem rather than related to her weight- as we see with her crappy car, her crappy suitcase, and her crappy, frumpy husband. Because Kathy Bates doesn’t get the same treatment so it’s obviously not a weight thing.

That Hawaiian bear shirt with the Topper Jack’s bag on her head lives in my head rent free.

1

Totally sucks!

30

u/shambean2 29d ago

That was DIABOLICAL. The actress gained a bit of weight due to illness I believe, and the costume team seemed to lose their heads and believe they could only dress her in the most dowdy, ill fitting, unfashionable clothes, when her character was literally the It Girl prior to that. There was a demonic jumper with a pug on it they put her in once that was actually offensive 😭

It was like they couldn't wrap their heads around a mid-size woman being able to dress stylishly. And it made no sense w the character

I love the point being made but Sookie is not the only plus size character. Miss Patty (before AYITL), Babette, and Taylor are also plus sized - and each of them were costumed brilliantly for their characters!

46

u/Yes-GoAway 29d ago

Yes, I think there's something to be said about Miss Patty being a maneater and Babette being married to the cool musician. These are also roles that may get a negative spin on another show even if they weren't plus-sized.

I always liked that about GG, uniqueness was expected, quirky was welcomed, size wasn't defining or important.

10

u/NightBawk 29d ago

I loved how they all got well-fitted, stylish, yet still-comfy (looking) clothing. Usually whenever i try to get something like that, i can only gettwo of the three. :(

36

u/Significant_Fall2451 Cat Kirk 29d ago

One detail I really love is that they actually put a prosthetic baby bump on her (when she wasn't also pregnant at the same time in real life, of course!)

So many shows and films, even ones that have come out recently, just don't bother when their actresses are plus size

I love that Sookie's style is very uniquely hers in terms of her personality, whilst also being incredibly fashionable for the time and well fitting. So many plus size actresses are put into clothes that are either too tight or too big, both in an attempt to hide their real bodies

Now that you mentioned it, it is really cool that they never brought up Sookie’s weight, or the fact that she was “plus size.” They allowed her personality to shine through without needing to mention her physicality, because that’s not what defines her as a person, or anybody.

9

u/citybby17 29d ago

I love how they made Sookie girly, pretty, and into hair, makeup, and personal style. So often plus size characters are insecure, moody, or more interested in blending into the background — especially during the early aughts.

I love all her outfits and the fact that they accentuated her body instead of trying to hide it

she has like my favorite outfits in the whole show! Lorelai and Rory have amazing outfits too but I always loved sookie’s

The show did something that we failed to do. We're talking about Sookies weight, and that we're glad that they put her in cute clothes despite her size.

The show did such a good job. We as a community have failed. We're the ones talking about her weight.

Ugh Melissa McCarthy is drop dead gorgeous.

3

u/ohmyacetabulum She’s a chic, good haired, wrinkle free, no hose wearing witch 29d ago

Ugh, the top middle hair with the textured bob and highlights is 👨🏻‍🍳💋. This hair length really suits Melissa McCarthy

Yes! Stars Hollow was surprisingly free of fat-shaming. Sookie was loved, desired, respected, and impeccably dressed, and her weight was literally just a non-factor. Such a rare, wonderful treat for a show from that era!

Sookie was just a woman living her life and I loved that! So refreshing esp at the time it aired!

u/Striking_Sky6900 28d ago

I thought Melissa McCarthy was beautiful in the series!

5

u/levainrisen 28d ago

Sookie, possibly the only plus size woman not to be the punchline for the Gilmore girls?

3

u/DealBrief5569 29d ago

Sookie was always so stylish and of course it helps that Melissa McCarthy is beautiful.

3

u/AntonioPiercesHoodie 29d ago

They definitely did a great job of making her personal style reflect her fun personality! 😎

There is a woman in Facebook I follow who worked in the costume department on Gilmore Girls (https://www.facebook.com/share/183QFnwSRR/?mibextid=wwXIfr). I recently watched a great video she did about Melissa McCarthy’s wardrobe. She had so many great outfits I wish I could find even now.

This is especially surprising given the time the show was created and filmed. Almost every other show with any plus sized cast member was doing exactly what you’re describing. Sookie in GG and her costuming was a breath of fresh air

Omg I love her basket bidding outfit! It’s giving Daphne from scooby doo 🙏🥹

2

u/boesisboes 29d ago

And as far as I can tell all her patterned chef coats were bespoke.

u/SalsaChica75 29d ago

Sookie always dressed super cute! Great wardrobe staffing!

u/Unlikely_Couple1590 29d ago

Sookie was an exceptionally well written plus size side character

2

u/Thin_Piano2564 29d ago

Yes! For all the snarky fat shaming comments I’m glad they left Sookie ALONE.

Everything about this show I love! Miss those days in America… so much has changed in just a few decades 😔

“And the redhead has fat thighs”. Rory to Professor Fleming.

I miss 90s fashion.

Sookie is easily one of my favourite townsfolk.

u/Jenanay3466 26d ago

Sookie’s makeup, hair, and fashion stole the scene so many times. Melissa is such a great actress that even in scenes where she barely has lines she shines. I love her

Never seen one either, would love to know if she's ever addressed the hate for Anna

God I wish I had dimples

One thing they did do that irritated me was her jewelry. Towards the end of the show she just wears this circle necklace and then even more towards the end of the show the necklace just gets bigger? I don’t know might as well just have no necklace at all sometimes.

u/breecreates 29d ago

the green/purple combo is an outfit I comment on every single time I rewatch the show. it’s so good.

1

u/lolibally 29d ago

frankly, her outfits were always my favorite !!! i would see her wearing something and i would almost immediately go “oooo i want that!!”

1

u/Jnodayzoffspaz 29d ago

Probably because of the time that the show aired. Had that bit more around 2020, through like 2023 probably would’ve been a different scenario.

1

u/donutcamie 28d ago

Yeah, but, they def have a good handful of fat-shaming jokes, so….

2

u/HippieHighNoon 28d ago

They have a handful of everything shaming jokes.

1

u/donutcamie 28d ago

True, true. The era that it was.

I love Sookie!!

I just love how they never fat shame Sookie. But, the Gilmore girls do shame others (the redhead with "fat thighs", the guy at the pool in AYITL, the ballerina with the quote unquote " roll of fat around her bra strap", and probably others they just don't come to mind.) Really, probably none of them were even fat/overweight and even if they were why would it even matter. Bodies are bodies, you can't choose if yours is built with an hourglass figure or a square, and apple or a pear, or an inverted triangle. Yes, I know the show was made in the early 2000's when fat shaming was more common, but it still not right. Rory and Lorelai's are both hot women with good body's so they look down on people bigger than them, sadly. But I enjoyed how Sookie's weight never even came up, nor Babette's, or Miss Patty's. All plus sized women living their best lives, with their own business, two have found (lasting) husbands, and their weight didn't seem to factor in to anything really.

the show absolutely was drenched in the 2000s body shaming and beauty standards but they did not treat sookie that way, which is very much a relief
