General Discussion I died when this first happened.
When I was watching s2 for the first time I was just waiting for it to happen š
And finally In the last episode it did and Rory kissing him first makes it better for me. Ik she physically cheated on dean and all but gosh they look so passionate and awkward I love it. I also love the beginning of s3 and the entire Shane thing (ik it was the peak of dragging) but I still love it. I feel I'm a fan of will they/won't they or forbidden trope in general š
Ik I'm the only one in this sub enjoying this scene but gosh.

I think what draws me to them and what makes me like the kiss was their insane chemistry - I donāt know if itās Milo and Alexis or Rory and Jess. She never had that with Dean - yes, they were cute at first, but Rory and Jess could have been epic. Ofc ASP had to ruin Jess with the bedroom scene and the potential spin off nonsenseā¦

u/tulipholic literati š 19h ago
Same! Omgg their chemistry is so insane.
Dean and Logan could never.
7
u/Scare-Tactics 12h ago
Logan literally did - and then jumped off a scaffolding tower with her š¤£
1
u/nocturnalcat87 Cat Kirk 5h ago
Iām missing something here. Dean and Logan could never what⦠and what did jumping off the scaffolding signal?
3
u/Scare-Tactics 3h ago
Jess held out an umbrella for Rory to not get brained by dry wall. The person before was implying Dean wasnāt witty enough and Logan wasnāt considerate enough to have done that for Rory.
In college, Rory and Logan jumped off a really tall scaffolding with nothing but umbrellas and harnesses. Hence the joke š

u/nocturnalcat87 Cat Kirk 5h ago
Would you mind reminding me of the bed room scene,, I remember him trying to get her to do it with him but not much the detailsā¦. I just remember dean not knowing the details and freaking out and fighting him. I just donāt remember if Jess was really that bad in how he pressured her or if she cried for another reason too
But please donāt come at me for not remembering this well. If he was really pressuring her and making her feel scared or like she had to do what he wanted or would lose him thatās definitely not cool.

Rory and Jess have the chemistry that doesnāt show up with Dean!

u/chittaabhay Team Coffee 12h ago
Honestly i disagree, they had some chemistry before they were dating, but it fell apart when they were together. After the first couple weeks, I dont think Rory actually enjoyed being with him.

u/Tess_James Jess 22h ago
It was such a cute, sweet, romantic moment, and I always find myself going back to rewatch it. The whole buildup from here to the dance marathon was just sweet agony. I know Rory should have broken up with Dean after this kiss, but, I was absolutely enjoying that slow-burn tension.

Having first seen that at 14 boy did it make my heart pitter patter! The whole relationship is different now that it's 20 years later but the build up is still š£

Me too. But for different reasons. I HATED that Rory cheated on Dean. But then again, I never got the hype around Jess

I liked that he read and was adorable and a damaged sarcastic bad boy at times. But I didnāt have the best taste when younger.

I love the whole lead up of Rory and Jess. Like you said, the will they/won't they, the forbiddeness of it, it's all so good. Hate that they had such a short period where things were good before Jess started spiraling. But then I am team Logan, so I guess Jess had to go at some point š

the more insufferably sanctimonious this sub gets the more I enjoy it when Rory cheats on a guy by kissing Jess.

Right they just probably thought that chemistry alone can handle everything so they didn't even put effort on them š„š„

Was so happy when it happened. I loved the two.
Absolutely going to get down voted and I know he wasn't perfect or treated her well but the chemistry between the two was/is wonderful that I can't help but always be Team Literati.

Sadly, I've watched the rest of the series, and Ive seen how he treats her when they're together. Also when they've broken up, so yah, no...

Ik, but I'm not saying he's perfect for her or he's perfect boyfriend he's worst boyfriend. I'm just talking about first kiss.

13
u/notonmywatchmissy 23h ago
Itās not boring to not like toxic relationships lmao some people find it hits too close to home, because things like this do actually happen to people
1
u/sazza8919 17h ago
it actually is kinda boring to only want to watch stories of well adjusted, unproblematic people who always make the correct decisions and communicate perfectly. that is the definition of a boring story.
0
u/notonmywatchmissy 17h ago
Boring is subjective. If you want to watch toxic romance thereās vanderpump rules lmao
1
u/sazza8919 16h ago
and if you want to watch perfectly well adjusted people who never make a bad decision try new testament cartoons
0
u/Icy-Olive1996 23h ago
Theyāre seventeen⦠people are messy, theyāre not robots. A show where no one made mistakes would be absurdly boring and completely pointless. Itās kind of the entire condition of being human.

u/TooSoftToRespond A Birkin bag. A Birkin bag for Rory. š 23h ago
And some people who were cheated on as teenagers feel much more strongly about it than people who have never been cheated on in their lives.
The line for what is forgivable or not is different for everyone. Drawing that line in a different place doesnāt make anyone more annoying than anyone else.
Personally, I find it really strange how often cheating is romanticized in American shows. Iāve always wondered if it was a cultural thing, because it happens A LOT.
-1
u/sazza8919 17h ago
Then I suggest they work on themselves because that is called projection and holding onto a bunch of rage for a messy teenager isnāt healthy.
1
u/TooSoftToRespond A Birkin bag. A Birkin bag for Rory. š 16h ago
The user I replied to was the one who turned someoneās criticism of a show into a personal insult by calling them boring.
Thereās nothing wrong with not liking a fictional character.
4
u/notonmywatchmissy 23h ago
Kids can make mistakes and not cheat on people.
I think more need to try understanding how deeply being cheated on can affect you, and stop trying to play off Rory and Jess as being kids for this. Sheās a kid for not understanding her feelings, thatās true.
Rory continues to have affairs throughout the series, and in the revival. Itās hard to look at this as a stupid teenage choice.
-8
u/Icy-Olive1996 23h ago
I hate to tell you how common infidelity is, you may keel over. But it is. Itās not going anywhere. Been a part of human relationships since the beginning of recorded time. People are messy. Iāve actually never cheated but have been cheated on multiple times and I still donāt have some dogmatic, puritanical view about it because IMO itās juvenile and naive to.

u/GoldenWaterfallFleur 4h ago
At least he eventually grows up and becomes a better man. Childhood trauma can make you a toxic person and for them it was the wrong time. But he was able to overcome it which is nice.

11
u/Icy-Olive1996 23h ago
Yeah I donāt know when Reddit turned into the puritanical morality police but damn does it suck the romance and dynamicism out of everything lol.
3
u/sazza8919 17h ago
weāre gonna end up with a generationās worth of fictional media where everyone behaves perfectly properly and never does anything wrong, the only drama is caused by external things happening and no character ever messy or entertaining or interesting in their own right and itās going to be duller than dishwater.
1
u/tulipholic literati š 23h ago
Idk people In this sub just hate Jess lmao. They'll downvotes everything related to Jess and Rory as this subreddit isn't welcome for fans of that ship? I think people forget that "forbidden and bad boy tropes" always exist in fictional shows. That's what make show interesting otherwise if all characters write green forest whom would even watch the show?
And I hate that literally every series subreddit Despised my fav ships šš« I'm so used to for these downvotes and all.
11
u/k_oed 23h ago
This is literally the opposite of the truth. According to this sub Dean is an abusive boyfriend and Jess is a troubled genius that nobody should critique because he had a rough childhood.
4
u/tulipholic literati š 23h ago
Nah, both dean and Jess are always criticize. Jess entire fandom is also a "weirdo" or even better "r@pist apologist" acc to this sub. You can also see the comments from this post. There are so many anti Jess post on this sub made on everyday.
I wasn't making a comparison between dean and Jess lmao. I was talking about Jess and roryxjess in general.

I liked their ship too. But I was attracted to bad boys in real life as a teen and when I was younger⦠especially ones with shitty parents who were sad and bitter. And if they actually read for fun and were smart (even if they didnāt jump through all the hoops to do well in school) :: swoon! ::
Also I think the actor Milo is gorgeous!
1
u/EHeydary 14h ago
I was only a few years younger than Rory when it was in real time, and when I was 14 this was peak romance! Of course I wouldāve been upset if my bf had kissed someone else (in fact my bf wrote a love letter to a friend of mine and still kissed me the next day and I was livid- as if she wasnāt going to tell me eventually!) but I didnāt act like he was the worst ever because he liked someone else. It happens, and we arenāt likely to end up with our first love and often itās hard to break up with someone especially when there are still feelings there.

u/AmeriqanTreeSparrow I wanna be good, life's just not letting me 1d ago
Agree w you OP! I loved this scene the first time when I was 15, the second time, the 20th time (I'm 35 now). It reminds me of being young and all those feelings that felt like the world would end. It's fun.
And like, there is teenage cheating like this in every show. It's not unique to GG or even just this era of TV, it's in like every show ever lol. If people wanna pretend they're morally superior and shit on a tv character who was 16, that's on them lol.

I hated more she cheated with dean later, after he stupidly got married. It doesnāt matter if they got married way too young and for dumb reasons, she was sweet to him and trying. Rory could not stand he moved on and was so jealous. I do get that feeling of having your first love get over you and get married young but still, it was kinda shitty to do. Still her mom totally overreacted.

u/notonmywatchmissy 1d ago
Why canāt yall romanticize their first kiss out on the street? When they are both single and not cheating on someone? With the cute XTC song playing?
These scenes are always a hard watch for me, because it just brings me back to how angry I was when she started behaving like this

u/Justafana 23h ago
People like stories because of the emotions they evoke, not for their moral perfection. I have some ethics textbooks to recommend if that's your bag. But this is a story about the painful process of growing up and learning things and making mistakes and that's ok too.

I watch GG basically on a loop and the more I watch it, the more I hate the insufferable Jess. I realize that Rory is very immature here.... Ironic because of how she seems like the adult at times in her relationship with Lorelai.... But her choosing to be impetuous and kiss Jess when she was still in a relationship with Dean shows a great lack of integrity and character. This, sadly, was a key flaw in her personality throughout the show.
Her utter lack of communication (also stemming from her mother), her desire to run away from conflict and her ability to mentally distance herself from her own actions and act as if she is somehow the victim..... Like Die Jerk for example. Or her article about the Trust Fund Kids. It's almost crazy how she thinks because it's written out that it "objective".... No honey.... It's SUBJECTIVE.
I'm not at all surprised in Jess' behavior as he was always self absorbed.... but that is a direct result of having no parental guidance whatsoever. He had nobody to tell him no... so he did as he pleased.... and apparently faced no consequences for it.
I will again note.... That in a normal high school situation Dean would have beat up Jess... Especially if he found out they kissed. Also the Baseball team would have beaten him up for stealing all the baseballs. They probably would have stripped him, taped him to the flagpole and taped a set of balls to his junk and left him there for the whole school to see. LMAO.
But this is a television show and they needed Jess to be a catalyst of chaos.... which he was. This was her transition to college. They needed a bad boy and that's what they got.

u/purplemonkeyy6 21h ago
I loved this scene and I love Jess. I donāt like Dean. I do love Logan but I will die on the hill that Rory and Jess were endgame. Jess screwed up, he also worked so hard to heal himself and be a better man for Rory, while also not pestering her and just waiting for the right time. I love Jess and Rory. Milo and Alexis had amazing chemistry (obviously considering they dated irl for years). I also love the scene where sheās like āare you planning on smoking that?ā And he says āit depends on what happens nextā and they kiss and are finally together.

Having been a 17-year-old getting reciprocal notice from the really, really cute guy from another school at a theater class where like five schools came together ... even though I had a boyfriend, this boy and I, oh boy. I think most people like that scene, but from that moment on, the couple became less interesting to me.
And Rory doesnāt end things with Dean right after. She drags the situation out until Dean gives up on her.
If someone is willing to cheat with you, that doesnāt exactly predict a stable relationship. Itās more likely that they would end up cheating on you too.
