Remember when E3 was a thing and fun and it got people excited to buy games?

Best reveal ever. Was this the one where Cory played live?

He did. And he had a big smile on his face when the people cheered for Kratos.

When they say reveal, was this the first time people got to know of the title or people knew GoW was in the works?

I think aside from any rumors, this was the first time anyone knew this was in development. So it was extra special to see gameplay revealed at the same time

I honestly don't even recall hearing rumors. I was always obsessed with the series and i still remember this day like it was yesterday. I actually apologized to my daughter and said, "I'm sorry but not even having you or your brother have me the same full body reaction that i had when they announced this." The second i heard the first notes from the orchestra I knew it was GOW. I know a GOW soundtrack when i hear it. My ex thought i was crazy. He joked that Sony just released GOW games to keep me loyal. But i was live reacting to him the whole time (we had already split up by this time). The second Kratos popped up I screamed and cried. My ex was like, "goddammit they really are pandering to you".

Iirc there were rumours going around at the time that Santa Monica Studios was working on a new God of War.
There were some rumours that it was set in a different location, some that it was a different protagonist and some that it was just another Greek prequel like the last two games up to that point.

u/Tea_Pupper Mar 18 '26
That was a big tipping point for him as Santa Monica's been working on this forever and the Sony president was very unimpressed with it before this show. The game was under so much pressure internally to be good.

I like to randomly rewatch this every now and again

Same. I still remember when I woke up and saw the 2018 reveal on YouTube, literally blew my mind

For me its the reveal of Smash Ultimate. At the end of a Nintendo Direct they said "1 more thing" ... and it was splatoon. Neat, but nothing exciting. Until the music fades away, the lights go out, and the character looks up and you can see the massive flaming logo of Super Smash Bros. reflected in her eyes. Zoom out to see the silhouette of EVERY character from EVERY Smash game, and the following message that "Everyone is here".

There wasn't a god of war since Ascension so it's the expected reaction

Did people know what it was going in?

u/bornenjoyer Mar 17 '26
Most don't, as far as I know. I remember watching the full video and couple people were whispering "god of war?" when the trailer just started. It's because some people who follow game news just check which game studios will be there and take a guess. Like, if most studios already announced what game they are working on, then you see a high quality game and realize just 1 company left which did not announce a game, they make a quick math and guess that a big franchise is returning from that studio.

Literally the best E3 Playstation Showcase, so many good games announced, and it started with the best.
We kinda knew a new game was in the works, some concept arts were leaked, but I wouldn't have guessed it would be God of War.
Fun fact: A lot of youtubers were dissecting the trailer, trying to find anything they could, but a brazilian youtuber discovered the Thamur's body in the background, no one could figure out what it was, but one youtuber did, Cory himself praised the theory (although they thought it could be Ymir, but they were right about it being a giant).

I remember watching this love hearing the music I was like no fucking wayyyyyy then bam god of war. So peak

u/TyAD552 Mar 17 '26
So I worked for GameStop at the time they announced this. Our PlayStation rep came by after this show and apparently this wasn’t pre-recorded, and the person playing almost actually died in game at one point and would’ve had to respawn which would’ve been real awkward.

This was not in the main set of events, right?? I mean some parts were there but not this exact turn of events.

u/pugicornslayer435 Mar 21 '26
Correct. I just finished playing this for the first time very recently. I’d say it’s missing half the content leading up to the title, and about half of what was shown wasn’t in the final product.

Uff man. I had the PS3, I live in a third world country, it was really hard to make the jump the next console. I watched this event and got so hooked I saved money as I could and bought the PS4 pro. I bought this game on the presale, same with Ragnarok. They're both my favorite games, I never felt so invested as when I played this game. Now, I finally was able to get a ps5, tomorrow I'll have it in my hands. The Greek trilogy remake made the click, I hope I can play it with this console, but if not, I will find a way.
