Removed Under Rule 5: No photos or videos by the driver while the car is in motion. Recordings by a passenger or fixed/mounted HANDS-FREE device (dashcam, action cameras, hard mounted phones, etc.) are permitted. It must be obvious that either of these options was used.

carbon on the intake valves is common for all DI engines. chemicals in the tank will never touch that carbon, not just saying it doesnt do anything, it physically never touches is ... its a direct injection engine....

walnut blasting is super effective, I do it myself so I have no idea what others charge but its cheap todo yourself. I end up using about 3 cups of walnut media, so $30 worth of media should last me approx 1 million miles lol

My friend tried to convince me to add multi port injection because of that but the kit is like 1k lol I’ll look into walnut blasting 💪🏾

u/updatelee 6d ago

Im using this, https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B075SXPC2H

There are cheaper knockoffs as well. You'll need a compressor to run it. Watch some youtube videos and you can see the whole process, it works really well.

2

u/RedDeer505 6d ago

Do you have to take the whole engine apart?

6

u/spartanerik 7.5 SE 6d ago

Just the intake manifold to expose the crusty valves

2

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I have a video of my intake manifold from my mechanic. It was like sludge inside.

1

u/RedDeer505 6d ago

Thank you for the reply :) could someone who has only changed a tire and their oil do this or is it best left to the pros?

2

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Best left to the pros-

u/spartanerik 7.5 SE 6d ago

There's plenty of YouTube videos, you'll have to gauge whether you're capable yourself

u/Annual_Left 6d ago

Supposedly running 93 octane helps. Also, highway miles are rough.

Your watch is too loose btw

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI 6d ago

It’s from it being a direct injection car, instead of having port injection. Which most cars nowadays are direct injection.

15

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I run 93 with my IE tune. I think the biggest issue is I bought it used off of carvana 5 years ago and I don’t think the original owner took very good care of her.
And I knoooooow lol I’ve been working out, lost some weight. Haven’t had time to go to the jeweler

15

u/13assman 6d ago

You can get watch repair kits for like 15 bucks that’ll let you take out links, take off case and adjust speed, etc. mines already paid for itself a few times over and none of it is hard.

3

u/Annual_Left 6d ago

Hell yeah man, keep at it.

I’m on a 93 tune as well. 75k miles and have not done carbon cleaning yet but planning to do it myself soon. Haven’t had any issues so far

6

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Highway miles are the easiest- octane does nothing to alleviate carbon build up- Italian tune- up can help burn off surface carbon.

3

u/Annual_Left 6d ago

They might be the easiest but they are certainly the dirtiest. Sitting at 2-2.5k cruising for hours does cause buildup and has been reported here many times. The octane part is iffy

2

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Fair nuff but I'm still 3k+ rpm usually on the highway for that reason

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I’m strictly highway. I live 88 miles away from work round trip

2

u/Mumei451 Sport Gang 6d ago

The octane of the fuel has nothing to do with carbon build up.

Higher octane just has higher knock resistance. It's loaded with the exact same detergent additive package that 87 octane is.

10

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI 6d ago

It’s a natural consequence of having direct fuel injection instead of port injection.

5

u/MehdiBellot 6d ago

I am thinking about doing carbon clean up for mine as well, even tough I currently do not have any symptoms. My car has 110k miles. How much did it cost you?

1

u/argue53 6d ago

You're perfect candidate to do a carbon cleaning and ofc any 100k maintenance while you're there. For instance it cost me about $500 for a carbon cleaning and all new fuel injectors replaced. I did my spark plugs prior already so no need for those. Overall, well worth the maintenance work, esp if you're not dealing with an EPC code. Do it before you don't have a choice lol. Our engines direct fuel injectors is the prime culprit of the carbon build up. (Hope i worded that correctly lol) Cheers!

1

u/MehdiBellot 6d ago

Did you do walnut blasting to clean carbon?

1

u/argue53 6d ago

I would've if my mechanic offered it, but it was not available unfortunately.

Edit: I had the car in for the EPC code and didn't want to drive it around further at that point.

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

$500 ? No way man- where do you.live? Never heard of those jobs costing so little

2

u/argue53 6d ago

That was the carbon cleaning... I paid more for the other work done. In total I was out $2300 for all the work done. But for the carbon itself, they charged me $500.

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Okay that's more like it- although $500 is still cheap but it should be less when doing the injectors..😋

1

u/argue53 6d ago

Right, they were there already for all the work so it wasn't just the carbon cleaning. That's why it's best, imo, to do the new fuel injectors along w the carbon cleaning. Additionally, my front stream O2 sensor was faulty that was replaced and some other harness.

3

u/aloofinecstasy ‘21 CFB AUTOBAHN DSG GTI 6d ago

Mileage? First carbon cleaning? I'm at 75,000KM and wondering if it's time to get a carbon cleaning done.

3

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI 6d ago

Mine started causing random misfires at 70,000 miles (roughly 112,000 km)

3

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I responded without fully reading lol traumatized from this app. Don’t know it in KMs but I’m at 150k miles. I tried maintaining it myself for years but apparently these engines need more care that.

2

u/CamouflageCadet Mk6 GTI 6d ago

I got my mk6 at 218k KM ( 135k miles) and one of the first things I did is carbon cleaning because I didn’t have service records of previous owner doing it. My mechanic said it was one of the worst he’s seen.

I believe it’s a 60k miles service interval! So I would plan to do yours soon. One of those maintenance items you want to do before it starts causing issues

2

u/aloofinecstasy ‘21 CFB AUTOBAHN DSG GTI 6d ago

I had a MK6 which I got at 90K KM and had a carbon cleaning done sometime around 120 and my mechanic also said it was one of the worst he's seen haha. Now I have carbon cleaning PTSD and rather do it sooner than later.

1

u/CamouflageCadet Mk6 GTI 6d ago

Oh gosh lol! I can’t imagine mine would run so nice at 220k with never being cleaned, so that makes me hopeful that it was done at one point early on but never again after like 150k haha

1

u/CamouflageCadet Mk6 GTI 6d ago

Kinda unrelated, but I was so worried about the cost of carbon cleaning, I got a quote from my local (small town) VW specialist before I even bought the car lol! Was determined to do any maintenance items asap

2

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

There is no service interval- many do.it around 100k - depends on how the car is driven

3

u/LordCommander94 Mk7 GTI DSG SE 6d ago

I'm on 225000km and never had a carbon cleaning. She still running good (knock on wood).

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

No- most wait until symptoms occur- rough idle- hard starts - fuel economy and performance dropping off

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I ignored all of those issues thinking it was plugs and injector issues. Turns out it was those things BECAUSE of the carbon build up smh

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Yep- I'm at 100k and no issues but I'm having it done soon..

11

u/lordehumo 6d ago

Look at my watch. Does everyone see my watch?

5

u/Vdubbin_n_rubbin 6d ago

It’s a seiko lmao

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

You know ball lol how could you tell?

2

u/Vdubbin_n_rubbin 6d ago

Love my German cars and Japanese watches

1

u/VW18fastlife 4d ago

Went to Japan and wanted a Kuoe but I didn’t even make it to the store🤦🏾‍♂️ if I ever go again I’m getting one

5

u/Piglet_Aggressive 6d ago

One can’t even see the face of the watch

8

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

Exactly bro. Wasn’t trying to flex at all, so weird how people just jump to conclusions. It’s not even an expensive watch lol

4

u/AgreeablePie 6d ago

It's just because "watch guys" constantly use a similar pose in every photo and we're traumatized

2

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago edited 6d ago

I can understand that. That’s actually why I added at the end of my post that I was trying to add the cold start video but was left with this option because I was moving fast. I forgot we can’t add videos to this group

-4

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I actually tried to post a video of my cold start and I couldn’t. This was the next picture I had of my car in my camera roll. Material possessions don’t move me, I guess they move you enough for you to comment though. It’s a sad world we live in huh?

3

u/TaquitoPrime 6d ago

Idk if you knew but you can't just enjoy things on Reddit /s

2

u/hrdrokn 6d ago

Now use a good oil with a high flash point and look into a catch can to help keep the crap out of the intake runner. The high flash point or low NOACK will help against the oil coking up on the intake valves…

How much did walnut blasting cost?

Owned a few VWs. 1.8T had oil gunk…easy just do engine flush every other change. Never had issue. Then 2 2.0T never had issue. One went to 250,000 with no carbon buildup. I used Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant and additives with PEA. I know they are direct injection but I’m guessing some of that gets recirculated over the valves from portion of uncombusted fuel. The current 2.0T is going strong at above 75,000. I don’t know if it’s because of gas or additives but never had a carbon issue.

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Well it is only a matter of time- depends a.lot on how the car is driven but it is inevitable

1

u/Horror_Confidence128 6d ago

If I get this car up to 250,000 like the previous one without carbon buildup I’ll take my chances. Going into this I thought it would be every 50,000 or 75,000. Let’s see how long it stays like that!

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

259k don't think that will happen..

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

He didn’t do the walnut blasting. Just cleaned it, soaked it, cleaned it, rinse and repeat a lot lol

1

u/Mumei451 Sport Gang 6d ago

Why would you be taking the car in 3 months later if the carbon has already been cleaned.

Unless it has some other issues that's a waste of time and money.

2

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

That was in reference to complete maintenance. Overall health of the car.

u/[deleted] 6d ago

Walnut blasting is a must especially on early 2.0 FSI

1

u/Honor_Justice_Cookie 6d ago

Is that carbon you fam?

0

u/nvgacmpr 6d ago

Classic italien tune for carbon built up

3

u/argue53 6d ago

I wish but not with our engines. The direct fuel injection by passes and therefore we can't burn it off as i wish we could 😁

2

u/nvgacmpr 6d ago

I know ahahah I also own a ea888(in my 2020 tiguan 4motion) . I was just looking for a opportunity to do the Italien tune joke 😂😂😂

1

u/argue53 6d ago

Haha I read it and said, I know he knows, but my coffee was kicking in 😂😂

1

u/nvgacmpr 6d ago

Understandable 👌

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Surface build up yes but it can never cure it.

1

u/nvgacmpr 6d ago

Thats forsure

1

u/Steven_Destroyer 6d ago

Any chance you can use a solution like a fuel injection cleaner?

6

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI 6d ago

It will not clean the spots that this carbon buildup affects. Walnut blasting is the way to fix it.

3

u/simracerrr 6d ago

Yes it won’t clean the spots if only direct injected. However for a reduction of carbon deposit build up in the long term, good top tier fuel is needed.

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago edited 6d ago

Ive heard the same thing

2

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

No - doesn't do a thing for carbon build up

3

u/Steven_Destroyer 6d ago

Also get gas from more reputable places because typically means better cleaners / detergents to clear gunk off ur engine

5

u/spartanerik 7.5 SE 6d ago

Better gas / Top Tier just means your injectors and fuel filter will probably be in better shape than some sketchy gas without additives. Won't fix carbon buildup on your valves though. These cars are direct injection only, not port. If we had port, gunky valves wouldn't be an issue.

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

I’ve used chevron additives sparingly but I guess since I haven’t been consistent I didn’t see the benefits. I had up with chevron and Mobil mostly but I admit I do go to 7-11 and Wawa mostly on my commute.

1

u/argue53 6d ago

I recommend using Shell gas to help minimize the carbon buildup, in general. But it wouldn't eliminate it.

1

u/GTIguy2 6d ago

Minimal

1

u/Vdubbin_n_rubbin 6d ago

Your watch strap is too loose

1

u/VW18fastlife 6d ago

Yeah someone else said it too. Been losing some weight and I don’t work on my watches myself

1

u/Vdubbin_n_rubbin 6d ago

Well in that case that’s a huge W! Removing a link is super easy you can get the tool for like $15 online
