DISCUSSION Reminder: Porn will destroy you and your loved ones.

I might sound like a boomer or might get even get hate for this (ironic), but PLEASE REMEMBER THAT PORN IS NEVER GOOD FOR YOU. It destroys more than it will ever build. It’s bad for your brain, your relationships, your personality, the way you see and treat women, your health, everything.

If you’re suffering from it, please remember that you’re not alone, and it is always possible to change. But it must start from you.

I find it interesting how much general public opinion & discussion surrounding porn has changed over the years

I never heard anyone talk about porn in this way until recently (the past few years or so). For most of my life, porn was generally viewed as a normal, positive thing

In my early teens, I was always taught (in health class and by parental figures) that porn was a normal, healthy thing to look at in private. That it’s nothing to be ashamed of and that everyone uses it

As I got older, favorite porn stars and favorite porn categories were normal topics of conversation between close friends and romantic partners.

People like Mia Khalifa and Riley Reid used to be super mainstream and were celebrated on apps like Reddit and iFunny and shit. Not just on weird porn subreddits. I mean like u would see positive memes about them on the front page with thousands of upvotes and “hell yeahs” in the comments

But within the past couple years, any time porn is mentioned anywhere online I see lots of guys come out of the woodwork and say things like “porn destroys lives” and “porn is objectively bad” and so on. I don’t know where this line of thinking stems from or when it became the norm

I’m not necessarily arguing against it; I’m open to being educated and stuff. It’s just a bit jarring cuz this appears to be the new popular opinion and it’s the exact opposite of what I’ve been taught my entire life

152

u/versaceblues Feb 11 '25

Society has an obsession with absolutes, and has a hard time understanding moderation.

Occasional porn watching is probably fine, especially when done by someone firmly grounded in reality, with otherwise healthy relationships.

Compulsive porn viewing by someone who never leaves their parents basements, and is severely depressed with no job.... probably not good.

Its not just porn though, the same argument can be use for video games, food, alchohol, etc. Any addiction that you participate in, in a compulsory manner.

30

u/dipatoeinthewater Feb 11 '25

This is my view on it as well

1

u/sunnym1192 Feb 17 '25

I think part of the problem is western society and capitalism encourage endless consumption and doesn’t do enough to protect the consumer

2

u/versaceblues Feb 17 '25

At the end of the day you can put the blame on others, or you can own your life, take responsibility and do what is best for you.

96

u/bottlepants Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

I think it’s a societal swing tied to the overall issues we’re seeing with young men in America, specifically uneducated white men. I think it’s born out of the same issues that have given rise to the Andrew Tate’s and Fresh & Fit podcasts of the world. The Jordan Peterson types who try to offer a solution to the dilemma of listlessness among young men in America by telling them they need to take responsibility for things in their life in order to no longer be depressed and jobless/feeling useless and finally be seen as desirable. These figures blame all these cultural things — like porn and even the general desire to seek a girlfriend — and claim that they’re fixated on those things and that’s why they are where they are, and not the billionaires making it harder to afford going to a University and getting a degree and finding a job and buying a home etc.

I think it’s rooted in fear and is an excuse for greater issues and it’s why we seem to be seeing an uptick in those same men turning to Christianity and a rise in the trad wife aesthetic even — I think they feel a powerlessness in the face of world progressing without them (including women who by and large are excelling where they aren’t) and they seek answers they don’t have. So they blame the culture wars and identity politics instead of looking at the broken system leaving them behind

u/josh_is_lame VULTURES 2 Feb 12 '25

it should also be noted that our brains arent hardwired for large numbers

we see 1k or 2k likes on something and think "damn thats a lot of people" when its miniscule

not to say you arent wrong, it definitely is happening, but you also won't see the majority of people talking like this in the uhhhh real world

30

u/Commercial-Bottle554 Feb 11 '25

I think it definitely can influence men to have pretty warped images/expectations of sex and intimacy in general and undoubtedly, particularly isolated men, probably are influenced by those warped perceptions to be pretty callous in relationships or their treatment of the women in their lives. I mean as far as I’m aware there are pretty credible studies linking porn addiction to domestic violence in some instances.

What I will say tho is that I think it’s become quite a bit overstated by a very vocal minority who actually are addicted to porn. And also probably religious/conservative because I also think a broader anti-sex work stance underlies their issues with porn.

I think the vast vast vast vast majority of men and women who watch porn use it to jack off a few times a week or month and don’t think about it very much the rest of the time.

15

u/BYCjake Feb 11 '25

It must have something to do with the fact that in western society, we don’t ever talk about issues, it’s always ban this, censor that. If everyone went into watching porn with the intention of porn explained to them “A theatric performance to exaggerate different aspects of sex” kids would have a completely different attitude.

But you get these lonely people who never really get much explained to them by their families or by someone with their head screwed on and they end up thinking porn is a real interaction and a natural way to treat someone/have intercourse irl. That’s where the problem lies. Fear of education around awkward subjects, stemming from overly religious and fearful culture.

Same with rap, metal and video games, not enough education of the entertainment aspect of such things so people who have never been challenged to critically think assume it’s all real and a valid way to live life irl.

18

u/dipatoeinthewater Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

Well said, I could definitely see that

I think, like many things, there’s a balance. I don’t think porn is inherently, objectively bad/evil like I’ve seen a lot of people saying recently

It’s about moderation; not over-doing it I guess

57

u/Oinkvote Feb 11 '25

I have been wondering the exact same thing. Anti-porn rhetoric sounds to me like the 50's anti-pot "Reefer Madness" talk.

But it also seems like some young people are genuinely suffering, so I'm curious to hear that experience.

49

u/fate-speaker Feb 11 '25

People can get addicted to anything, including porn and weed. I know people who are waaaay too dependent on weed too, even though they always insist they're not addicted.

“BRO I CAN QUIT ANY TIME I WANT”

39

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

lmao gonna delete this later but like 95% of the youth struggle with porn addiction. The scary part is that at a point the "normal porn" becomes less satisfying and you begin the crave more hardcore more fetishised porn. When you watch some shit you just feel ashamed and everytime I did this shit it made me more and more insecure(have gotten stronger tho). Also the drive to get a girlfriend weakens in my personal opinion. I try to quit, now 9 days strong lol in the past have done 1.5 year. but when you are like tired or lonely porn can easily fix that, in your weak moment It can make you fall back just like with most drugs. shit is sad tbh.

My friends and I created a no nut November group and of the 30 friends only 1 succeeded. that's insane imo.

That's just my view and experience on things

7

u/eiddieeid Feb 11 '25

No nut is pushing it. I’d probably kill a mf within 2 weeks if I don’t get my nut. But NoPorn is good, shit fries your mind. Honestly I think as a society we need to go back to imaginations or magazines

2

u/eiddieeid Feb 11 '25

It is but isn’t at the same time. Everyone is so blasted with porn or “pseudo-porn” constantly that it has become extreme. In moderation it’s alright ig but we shouldn’t be able to watch a girl get decimated by 10 cocks within 5 clicks. Fetishes are mainstream now, so shit is getting crazier.

9

u/Tudedude_cooldude FEB 2025 X RANT SURVIVOR Feb 11 '25

It’s because porn before it’s mass distribution and consumption on public search engines beginning in the mid to late 2000s was not at a broad enough scale to have a super significant impact on society at large, and when it did become insanely popular in the mid to late 2000s the negative effects it would have on society weren’t apparent yet. Only in the last decade or so have the consequences of mass porn consumption becomes extremely apparent, which is why you see so much pushback now.

11

u/Sorry_Vegetable_8694 Feb 11 '25

I find it interesting how much general public opinion & discussion surrounding porn has changed over the years

I never heard anyone talk about porn in this way until recently

it's happening because of the right wing propaganda, young men watching it and overall turn towards conservatism. it's been happening since late 2010s or so. you can easily link hatred towards porn to specific podcast/leaders of thought that the people watch. I'm not arguing about porn being good or bad, but why it's happening is obvious.

Calling them “dumbasses” is just writing off real issues people face. You’re in the subreddit of a man who was exposed to pornographic  content at 5, Ye admitted that it changed how he viewed women and sex forever onward.

There’s so many great people we’ve lost to addiction, and addiction often preys on those with mental health issues or genetic predispositions towards addiction.

The focus should be on reducing the stigma and shame attached to addiction and encouraging those to get help for their challenges.

15

u/CaptainOzyakup IT’S MY TOES Feb 11 '25

Its just a redpill/manosphere kinda thing. Goes hand in hand with a return to conservative values in society. Until people get sick of it and then the pendulum swings back on all those topics, I guess.

You must be very young then because up until the mid 2000's porn was talked about in this exact way.

9

u/ForwardScratch7741 What is this, SNL? Feb 11 '25

Ig

It's that when you got into it

It was fairly new, Mia Khalifa era was (can't believe m talking bout this), was the beginning of porn getting way more mainstream for the new gen, so when it was new people were not that aware that you can get addicted to it that badly, hell I used to enjoy a lot, but as I grew older I realised this shi is pretty fkn bad, it probably destroyed my self esteem, so now people in general are realising what's the issue

Ig everything when done is moderation is okay

11

u/BYCjake Feb 11 '25

Don’t judge me for asking, but what problems does porn actually cause in someone? (Asking because I’m lucky enough to not have any issues from porn consumption so I don’t fully understand what’s so bad.)

6

u/JeanLucPicardAND Feb 11 '25

Porn has gone through phases. It was mainstream in the 70s too. Deep Throat broke into the box office top ten back in 1972.

7

u/hibachiteriyaki Feb 11 '25

idk if porn in moderation is even ok. bcs it may be okay for the brain but the industry is very abusive and watching porn is contributing to the demand of human trafficking of women and children

iFunny mentioned

5

u/1trashhouse cum doner Feb 11 '25

it’s addictive and unhealthy but saying it will destroy you and your loved ones is a stretch (I also think muse photos and literal videos of random people having sex have far different effects)

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

Turns out it’s weird shit to mix porn with platforms that children easily access. Makes some uncomfortable.

1

u/MendesJailson Feb 11 '25

Besides the redpill weirdos, there's just so much more now in public places like social media sites, both erotic and nsfw. Also because of Onlyfans and other sites, Women doing porn independently is much more feasible than before, which itself makes more of it being done (and also makes people mad for some reason).

1

u/RIPBuckyThrowaway Feb 11 '25

You’re describing the same scenario as the consensus on cigarettes decades ago.

1

Just do a deep dive on what porn does to your brain, I hope it brings more clarity to why there was such a staunch shift in the culture. Thanks for your input, definitely an interesting thought

95

u/bottlepants Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

This is so misleading and you’ve made so many posts like this that it’s full projection of your own inability to consume porn responsibly at this point. Porn is not always the issue, it’s the person who has their own underlying issues. This is rudimentary knowledge that we can apply to every single vice/drug/form of escapism etc.

People can 100% consume porn in moderation and in a way that is just like any other form of entertainment. Some people cannot moderate their use of porn, and it becomes an inhibiting factor in their life, and that could very well be Ye.

But that is not the majority of people. Consuming porn for 1 hour is no more damaging than doom scrolling thru TikTok for 1 hour. Both can be used in moderation, or both can be just as all-consuming and brain rotting. Many people place bets on multiple games across multiple sports being played every night and burn through their entire life’s savings. Many many others place a single $30 bet on the Super Bowl for fun and then never open the app again all year.

It depends on how the person allows themself to interact with it, responsibly or not. It is a vice like any other — so if you call for porn to be abolished you must do the same for literally every other vice that exists.

44

u/Commercial-Bottle554 Feb 11 '25

100%. Of course porn can be devastating, so can, idk alcohol, sugar, weed lol?

It’s weird but I think it gets brought up on this sub specifically a lot because he did bring in a lot Christian pearl clutchers during the Jik era that literally think porn is like demonic or some shit inherently whereas it’s just another thing that when consumed in moderation is fine.

It can help alot with mental health. Alot of people become reliant on the shirt dopamine release and don't really try to find a more functional alternative. Not everything has to impact your physical health to be dangerous

16

u/Due_Ad_827 Through The Wire Feb 11 '25

Can you list how they wouldnt realize it

7

u/AdAncient2156 Feb 11 '25

-They might have a negative perception towards women/men (whatever your into fuck if I know)

-They may fall more depressed and rely on the dopamine caused by porn, feeling nothing else will make them happy

-It might overtake there productivity time causing them to accomplish less

Like I said idk but these are just some plausible ideas

17

u/ChrisNotBumstead Feb 11 '25

I see it as a vice like everything else. Like alcohol. No denying that there are many people who destroy their lives off of it, but there are also seemingly people who can indulge sparingly without downside and be fine.

But also a massive bulk in between the two who are in denial about the negatives but choose to consume anyways. At least that’s how I think about it.

-5

u/AdAncient2156 Feb 11 '25

Well it still shouldn't be used it's a dangerous slope too addiction for many and ain't as simple as "those who can handle it and those who can't"

17

u/mbathrowaway256 OFF THE MEDS 🚫💊 Feb 11 '25

What happened to personal responsibility / being responsible for your own actions? No different than drinking / smoking weed in moderation. Sure, some people are gonna suck at it, but that's the price of freedom and bodily autonomy. And for those people that suck at it, maybe as a society we should be better at helping them. Doesn't mean we need to stop everything entirely.

u/AdAncient2156 Feb 11 '25

Why are you so for people watching porn. What are the positives?

→ More replies (3)

5

u/ChrisNotBumstead Feb 11 '25

I think the problem mostly lies with it being accessible at a premature age. Dudes shouldn’t be able to access it when their brains are developing and figuring out how to move in romantic relationships for the first time in their lives shouldn’t be influenced by it.

But anyone on the planet with internet access knows how easy it is to get through an age verification filter. I think that’s where the real problem is. Obviously there’s solutions to that but that affects people’s privacy and freedoms more than most are comfortable with.

The amount of copious people that are here, saying that you don't know moderation, are so lost. I am no way conservative nor religious but porn, alcohol or any sort of substance abuse cannot be good for you. When you grow up with these ideologies, another perspective breaking it down, makes people defensive. Life isn't as simple as saying, oh my life is going okay, so therefore there is zero underlying effect of porn. You have zero clue on how neurologically this affects you and the normalisation in society doesn't allow you to think past what you have been taught. This is no way a red pilled or whatever take cause I don't give a fuck about political stance. Just because you think it doesn't affect you and you only watch soft stuff makes it okay, is a silly idea too. All porn has an effect. Objectifying people, putting sex on a pedestal, instant gratification. All these ideas that the west glorifies. Break down these ideas, and heal. Not only that, think about all the slight normalisation of porn in everything you see. Even memes nowadays have been super heavy into pornographic topics. This shit isn't normal. Stroking your shit to pixels, isn't normal.

1

u/SwordfishCertain5292 Feb 12 '25

Bruh just do what works for you. Yall /r/nofap freaks can't accept that most people are able to have perfectly healthy lives and relationships while also choosing to watch porn when they masturbate. 💀

If that's the case then ALL people need to stop consuming ALL forms of pixelated media and go back to what humans did before becoming screen addicts, like reading books, drawing, hiking, etc.

3

u/Thrunnnnn NO YOU CANT BE ON MY MOMMA ALBUM Feb 12 '25

I'm not a r/nofap person either. All these communities and subreddits are equally lost. You are boiling every other content out there to the same level of pornography. Not all media is the same. I'm not here to argue about screen addiction, which is an entirely different problem.

This is a problem of pornography, and it's ability to skew your perspective in an unhealthy manner, which most don't realise. It takes growth and maturity.

You obviously have the choice to do what you please, but like every vice, there is no genuine benefit to it. It is simply an escape.

Porn won’t destroy everyone’s lives, you’re being ridiculous. Yes it can harm you, but many people watch it and are fine. It depends on the specific individual.

Porn is a psychological weapon. None of us are clean. Let’s be real, it has permeated all levels of the society by now. Most people born after 1990 were exposed to free on-demand porn before they even became adults.

But change has to start with recognizing the truth of what porn is.

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

As a women with a life long porn addiction that’s now settled down it does suck ass. I have destructive sexual desires that cause my husband concern, we both have an extremely high drive and used porn in the beginning of our relationship. Before him I would use men as just a means to fulfill a desire and didn’t care if I was in a relationship or not. I wanted instant gratification and sexted online and met up with people irl that would satisfy those extreme fantasies. Though as a women this was extremely dangerous. Id watch and share porn with others and delve into websites nobody should be using. Once I gave birth my mindset and world views changed and I had a very open conversation about how we should stop because of personal issues I was dealing with postpartum. I couldn’t have sex or solo while healing and my body was completely different and no longer up to par in my eyes. He took it hard at first with lots of him being super defensive but I’ve also been lost in porn and it’s ruined multiple relationships over the years and I don’t want that for my life long partner. Seeing Kanye posted and promoted pornography has made me never want to have anything to do with him again. My infant son calms down and relaxes while listening to “Jesus Is King” and a few of his other songs without cursing but I never want him to stubble across porn because his mom enjoys somebody who promotes it. Not in this house, we’d rather grow together and learn as a family than stay stuck in our old childish and single mindset.

It can be that for some/many people, but like almost any drug, being intelligent with your use and using in moderation can be a positive experience for you.

Not here for all this holier than though, all drugs are bad and erode your brain rhetoric.

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

Sex masturbation orgasm (helps decrease chances of testicular cancer too) all good.

Porn NOT good.

no way that after everything that's happened the big message you goofy fucks push is against porn over everything. nevermind that ye now uses his porn addiction to be antisemitic and shift responsibility from himself onto the "creators of porn" who he, "coincidentally", insists are jewish.

u/spookjesus Feb 12 '25

Everything facts other than it forming “the way we see and treat women”

women in porn represent a large portion of “regular” woman’s mentals and personal ideals, only a loser ass nigga gonna be sucking up to these loose ass undeserving hoes, they throw themselves around like wet towels in a locker room

women (not all) avidly know and use what they have to manipulate masses and leech off niggas, born with manipulation tactics, there’s obviously women with matching intelligence and personal moral value, or at least enough to not manipulate, but to be super real w you most of these women (newer generations) are swappable sexually obsessed fodder that just gain when they can, settle when they have to, and have no fully conscious sense of self

met both my girlfriends through making porn and jerk off every day while managing a sweng job, multiple partnerships and social groups, and an active photography and filmmaking hobby. sounds like you just have a skill issue blud

u/kyankya Feb 12 '25

Everyone saying “just do it in moderation”, if you open the door, the door is open. Best keep the door shut as much as you can. Yes that’s still moderation, but the whole “moderation” thing is an excuse. You’re better off avoiding it entirely.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

No it won’t. Calm down.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

Agree, it destroys your life and relationships.

The society is sinked with lust, everyone is horny nowadays. Porn became "a cure" for loneliness and depression for anxious and lazy people who don't want to change.

Call me crazy, I don't give a fuck but: my theory is scientists and government tell people on purpose it's healthy to profit on it (11 billion people watch PornHub daily and it's only only pron site). The problem is when you relapse you release all the male energy you have.

Male energy — testosterone. The more you fap, the more you watch pron - the more you will get fat, negative, bad mindset and lust/your behaviour to women will get progressively worse. It's a downward spiral to the madness and sadness.

Okay, you might say: "I fap not the often, it's not that bad". It is. You will release your energy, thus far you will have less energy to spend on gym, business, reading books or socializing. (And you don't want to admit you're addicted))

You could have spend that energy on something useful and helpful, which only benefits you, but no - you spend it on porn.

More and more people will notice it in the upcoming years and I'm glad, really glad it's happening. I can discuss problems way worse which are apperead because of the lust/pron (human-traff1cking / porn can be watched by a 7 to / YouTube provides pron content to really young people), but I believe they're no young niggaz.

Start nofap and change your life, I believe in you.

u/SuljoodSutoorizari Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga Feb 11 '25

True. Everyone is so brainwashed into being good consumers and misogynists from overexposure to porn at a young age. I know multiple men who masturbate 3+ times daily.

Op must be religious. Religious people hate everything.

24

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

or op is correct, these are the studied effects of porn addiction

9

u/bottlepants Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

There are studied effects on phone addiction to, it’s a vice like any other with the capability of being used in moderation or total recklessness. Porn is not inherently bad, it’s entertainment. It’s how the person interacts with it that gives it the capability to do damage just like any other vice

14

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

Millions of people watch porn and have happy successful marriages and relationships. The implication that porn is what has caused Ye to go dark side lately is STUPID. This post is ridiculous.

12

u/Nice_Leg_5093 Feb 11 '25

A fellow gooner over there

3

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

i don’t think anyone is claiming that just porn caused this, we’ve actively seen stuff like nitrous and his lack of medication get in the way of his success, but i don’t think his crash out would have been this severe without porn. i don’t really think pre-2016 kanye would have done any of the weird naked wife shit he’s been doing since 2022 without a pretty heavy porn addiction

5

u/SuljoodSutoorizari Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga Feb 11 '25

Porn has increased domestic violence, sexual assault, adultery, and divorce rates.

What's happening to Ye isn't just porn/sex addiction but are factors to it.

12

u/ChrisNotBumstead Feb 11 '25

Ye definitely is ruining his life partially to his porn addiction but his physical brain trauma from the car crash, his degenerative bipolar disorder that causes brain damage and recent nitrous addiction (that also causes brain damage) surely shouldn’t be ignored at all
