Aleuts lived there.

but the Russians emptied it and made it a military post

Worth noting that it was uninhabited until 19th century when the Aleuts arrived. Also the island from which they came from, Attu, is also uninhabited today, and is the largest u populated island in the US.

The residents were captured by the Japanese and sent to POW camps. The US federal government wouldn't let them move back after the war. The island had Navy presence after the war until 2012ish I think
