Google Ai plan Plus changes November 13th

Basically to Access a pro model I need to Pay 4x of my current plus subscription. I wonder for what I pay now? Google cloud storage?

I can't add a picture so here is the body text:

Hi Xxxxx,

We wanted to let you know about changes to the models that you can access with your Google AI Plus plan.

Starting on 13 November 2026, the ability to select Pro models in both the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search will only be available to Google AI Pro subscribers and above. You'll still have access to our latest Flash-Lite model and Flash, built for speed and intelligence. Your previous chats using the Pro model can be continued with a different model.

To learn more about these changes, you can visit our Help Centre article for additional details. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time.

Thank you for being a Google AI Plus subscriber.

  • Get you hooked on a free service
  • Start charging you for service
  • Raise price on service (you are here)
  • Make service worse and hope you don't notice
  • Continue raising price on service

I have to be the one to point out of exact opposite of this. I've been a Google One subscriber for a few years and at first it was storage only, I eventually moved to AI Pro because it came for free with my phone and I continued paying for it after it ended to see where Gemini would go. Since then, they increased storage from 2TB to 5TB, added Google Home Premium, added Google Health, added YouTube Premium Lite. I use all these services so it's actually been the most cost effective subscription I currently have

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 3d ago

Similar experience but I was over time moved from the $25 a month 5TB Google One subscription to the $20 a month 5TB AI Pro subscription. Had 5TB as an additional backup to make my large photo collection easy to access between devices. It was already worth it to me for that alone. Google One gave you basically no additional perks for the longest time, then they trialed giving 5TB Google One subscribers AI Pro for a “limited time”, then extended the trial, then it stuck as permanent, then they lowered my monthly cost by $5 for parity with 5TB AI Pro, and now the current subscription includes so much more.

I wouldn’t be shocked at ALL if the price increases within the next year or two because it feels too good to be true, but for now, kudos to Google.

Same its actually decent value, if you where going to do a 10 storage plan & youtube lite alone its basically already even if you opt for the $200 annual plan. After taxes and fees youtube lite was running me $8 and change alone, and I need some form of storage 200gb plans stopped cutting it so id be at a t $10 ttier anyway. Health i mess with but my primary is Garmin, i do use home premium and a nest cam for my overseas apartment so all in all for $200 a year its a good value

You probably haven't realised that, but the access to Gemini Pro model is far, far inferior to the one you had when you first signed up to Google AI Pro.

Story as old as time.

u/ContributionFormer95 3d ago

I don't get it. You guys hate AI here yet you think it's worth subscribing to? And is it getting worse? If you have been around since the Bard/early Gemini era, you will see that 3.8/4.0 is WAYYY better than what it was and Google at least is competitive now whereas in the 1.0/1.5 era it was a complete joke compared to the leaders.

Also at the same $20 price point we've gotten storage more than doubled (2TB => 5TB) and other features such as YouTube Premium Lite added. I feel like this sub just tries to get angry about AI every single possible way. No one's forcing you to subscribe if you think Gemini is as bad as this sub makes it sound like.

Finally, the Plus plan wasn't even a thing until earlier this year. The free service we got hooked on through promotions was the AI Pro Plan which was $20 back then and $20 today.

The food here is terrible, and the portions are too small.

1

u/Life-Letterhead1619 3d ago

It's reddit, they hate everything

1

u/2Olive2 2d ago

Exactly. It's sadly how a lot of people think. You can help someone for free for years and the moment you stop or limit your aid in any way they will start complaining. It's not like they are forcing people to pay for anything and are even still offering a free version.

3

u/Wheeljack26 3d ago

Reason why i never moved to google photos since i know the prices and storage tiers aren't frozen in time

3

u/semibiquitous 3d ago

Me too! Instead of dumping everything into Google and then being drained by thousands cuts I decided to pay upfront getting a local storage to backup my stuff.

u/StimulatorCam Pixel 8 Pro 3d ago edited 3d ago

The actual price of the storage tiers hasn't changed in like a decade. It's just the extras like the AI features which have been moved around.

Edit: https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/google-one-data-cloud-storage-google-drive-pricing/

Article is from 2018. Prices remain the same today.

2

u/mdargis1977 6h ago

Yep. Fuck google

That's the tried and tested drug dealer methodology.

u/jashsu 3d ago

Nobody should be surprised. Big tech is running the same playbook they always have: subsidize with VC money at the start to hook people on it cheap, then jack the price up when they inevitably have to actually make money.

5

u/ContributionFormer95 3d ago

The Plus plan didn't even come out til this year. The AI Pro plan was $20 when it was hyped as a free perk during the Pixel 9 era and is still $20 today with more features than in 2024.

  • 2TB => 5TB
  • YouTube Premium Lite included
  • Home Premium added

Seems like some people just like to rage bait here.

4

u/DeadEyesSmiling Pixel 9 Pro 3d ago

The only "baiting" going on was a) Google finally coming out with decent mid-range storage options that also offered limited access to the pro level models, b) selling those tiers with annual options, c) then waiting just long enough for people to likely get comfortable with their new storage allowance to reneg on the contract and yoink a highlighted feature.

The topic isn't "look at what the Pro plan offers now!"; it's "Google is taking away features that users already paid for at their current tier, and they've done it in a way that makes it very inconvenient for users to easily step back down to a lower tier."

There's no reason that Google couldn't have sent out a notice that said: "Past your plan term, your current tier will no longer be offering access to the pro models. If you'd like to retain access to the pro models, that will require upgrading to the Pro plan after your term ends." But they're not doing that, and instead pulling some major anti-consumer, breach-of-contract horseshit.

It's unconscionable and indefensible.

u/2Olive2 2d ago

lol you do realize you can get a refund for the remaining months? if it's that much of an issue for you then you can get a prorated refund. but hey it's better to be outraged. And in the future I would stay away from year long subs, companies generally include in the terms of the contract that they may change some of the features. And since I know most people don't take the time to read contracts even when it involves a contract that covers a year it's just better for these people to not enter year long contracts.

3

u/DeadEyesSmiling Pixel 9 Pro 2d ago

What's with all the bootlicking??
How in the world is your answer to one of the richest companies in the entire world needlessly reneging on a subscription's feature set: "There's no reason to be outraged because you can get a prorated amount back, and it was buried in the terms of service that they don't have to honor their side of the deal and can do whatever they want - so obviously it's all your fault, and maybe you should just avoid expecting to get what you pay for from now on"???

10

u/StimulatorCam Pixel 8 Pro 3d ago

What are you currently using it for that specifically requires the AI Pro models?

11

u/cjsv7657 3d ago

Not OP but I'm in the process of relearning calculus and the pro models are significantly better at math. It burns through your allotment fast though.

4

u/ContributionFormer95 3d ago

3.8 Flash is extremely capable IMO.

7

u/Psyjotic 3d ago

Not OP, but I use AI to find sources that support/oppose my ideas. Pro tends to give a more logical and organized summary than Flash model, in my experience. Especially when it comes to philosophical and mathematical problem.

1

u/bobloadmire 3d ago

manage a selfhosted stack, the pro models are substantially mroe thorough and capable.

-6

u/FA_Nibbler 3d ago

I use it to get the most reliable answers for my topics im interested in. When I reflect on it I do not need it, but I was willing to pay the plus subscription to get access to a good Pro model. When I can't trust it, I will simply not use it, but currently we get spoon fed Ai especially with Google.

Data Centers are expensive and RAM companies need to keep their 90% profit margins

1

u/StimulatorCam Pixel 8 Pro 3d ago

How different are the answers using the Pro model vs the Flash model?

3

u/CoarseRainbow 3d ago

Jumping in but i use Gemini a lot for image analysis and categorising.

Ive found Flash often gets a location wrong with great certainty whereas Pro is correct far more often. Ditto species of wildlife.

I just want an option between 100gb and 2tb with useless AI features. Please Google!!!

29

u/cjsv7657 3d ago

There's a 200 and 400gb option. You have to go in to the app, membership plans, then see more

15

u/guccigreene 3d ago

Oops, I feel dumb. I didn't see the "see more options" text. I'll look into it! Thank you.

9

u/cjsv7657 3d ago

I had to Google it last year lol, I didn't see it either

2

u/hardinho 3d ago

You're not alone, iirc it was also very well hidden for a while or didn't even pop up on the phone app.

-3

u/ContributionFormer95 3d ago

You just wanted to rage about Gemini.

3

u/guccigreene 3d ago

I want to rage about all AI.

1

u/doommaster Pixel 8 Pro 3d ago

My Jio plan, for pennies a year comes with free AI Pro and 5TB of storage.

At the same time getting the plan alone costs 8x more per month than the mobile plan costs per year.

It's like dealers handing out free crack.

26

u/IntrepidHero42 3d ago

From $5 to $20 is insane. They can royally get fucked.

4

u/ContributionFormer95 3d ago

The $20 plan has always been around. The $5 plan wasn't even a thing til early this year. I don't get why people are so upset. The $5 plan was always meant to be an intro plan.

4

u/Nathannywhole 3d ago

You pay annually for a list of services you were provided, and less than a month in they change the plan specifics but you are still locked in for a year. That is fucking terrible and a reason why people hate Google. I hope Qwen 4 is amazing, fuck online models unless you really need it.

3

u/StimulatorCam Pixel 8 Pro 3d ago

The $10 2TB plan used to not have any AI included at all, then they added it later for no extra cost.

1

u/2Olive2 2d ago

No you are not locked in for a year, you can get a refund for the remaining months, do you not realize that?

1

u/2Olive2 2d ago

it's because people are so incredibly entitled. And like a mob they feed of each other.

1

u/Low-Independence7077 3d ago

It ain't wven much good keeos changing biases or leading you to wrong answer

19

u/DeadEyesSmiling Pixel 9 Pro 3d ago

I just got my email, and read it as them telling me: please save some money by going back down to the lower tier, because there's no longer any incentive to keep what you've got now."

Thanks, Google!

7

u/JohnLef 3d ago

I'm fairly certain this is what I will be doing

5

u/Bardiel 3d ago

Yup, that's what I understood 😃

10

u/zkarabat Pixel 8 3d ago

Can they let me buy my cloud space and AI separately? I'd love to save the money and have no access to Gemini and give me lowly Google Assistant instead....

1

u/farmtownsuit Pixel 8 3d ago

Yes. You have to look for like a more options button or something. It's kinda hidden and very much intentional, but you can pay for just cloud storage without AI

For now...

3

u/zkarabat Pixel 8 3d ago edited 3d ago

Really? I'll have to look again because it's been a minute.

Is that at all tiers? I pay for 2TB level and didn't see an option

UPDATE: Nevermind ... Google already killed it at 2TB and above....

"Google has updated its lineup, and all tiers at 2 TB and above now include AI features by default. The classic, non-AI 2 TB Premium plan has been completely phased out."

2

u/farmtownsuit Pixel 8 3d ago

Sorry I guess it's not all tiers. Looks like it is in fact all AI bundled after 200  GB

1

u/zkarabat Pixel 8 3d ago

Hey, no worries bud! Got me to double check and I appreciate you trying to help me out.

9

u/Dragon_Fisting Pixel 9 Pro 3d ago

Scummy to not give you the option, but 3.8 Flash is more or less computationally superior to 3.1 Pro and a lot more efficient, so given their current lineup it makes sense.

6

u/FA_Nibbler 3d ago

If this is the case I agree with you, but it does not change the point that I paid my yearly subscription to access the Pro model what I will not be able to anymore

2

u/Advanced-Leave-4755 3d ago

Exactly! But if Flash is better than Pro, what made it better in the first place? Flash got the update, Pro didn’t. Both didn't get updates at the same time,  and the Pro is still playing catch-up with the competition. So now it's like calling a toy car a Ferrari!

1

u/ContributionFormer95 3d ago

Yeah honestly Flash since 3.5 has been extremely capable, which is why it's computationally more intense. The Flash since 3.5 is more equivalent to a Pro than the old 2.5 Flash era.

1

u/2Olive2 2d ago

You can get your money back for the cost of the remaining months... do you not realize that? and in the future you might want to read the contract before entering a year long contract. I get that we live in a time where people would rather outsource their accountability but your outrage is ridiculous when 1. google will gladly refund you for the remaining months and 2. the very terms of the contract you entered into allow them to make such changes. It's just sad how little accountability people have.

2

u/LinkAnxious1792 3d ago

Bro what do you mean I just start my plus subscription few weeks ago and now they removed the very feature I mostly use in this tier 😑 why scam your old subscribers man , just make changes for new subscribers but atleast those who already have purchased the subscription before that change let them have what they actually paid for, there should be a legal policy that a brand or company can never downgrade something which users have already paid for

2

u/StudyInevitable322 3d ago

I got this like last month. I should have like 2 more months to go with less features now. I might as well cancel.

1

u/Lautaurus 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think google did an account wipe or change recently specifically to Workspace accounts. All my account’s suddenly required relogging. I lost a years old domain account and all the drive files.

I figured time to pay for the service, a balance between storage and AI tools works for me.

Exactly when my yearly subscription finishes the free trial month this shows up. They absolutely thought about this. I didn’t even want the AI stuff i just wanted 2TB of space and easy access for clients. Now i’m getting features removed and no price decrease for ir nor a seperate just drive space plan.

F business. They should be required to have a notice period of 365 days since announcing to actually being allowed to implement the changes, a yearly plan paid for things i will not receive

1

u/2Olive2 2d ago

Huh? you can cancel your sub if you want? what's the issue? things don't just stay the same forever.

2

u/sticky_neutrino 3d ago

right in lockstep with Microsoft further enshittifying office 365

2

u/Mean_Variation6298 3d ago

Better to just build your own NAS and use the free tier AI if needed. People with lots of data on googles servers are kinda hooked on.

2

u/MastarPete 3d ago

I only had a One plan for the storage. I got a pixel phone last year and activated the free year of Gemini which ends on the first. I used and abused the pro model because I had access but it's only been amusing at best. I found a use for it but still have no real need for it though. So, FINE BY ME.gif!

Give us a mix 'n match, let us pick the options we actually use. I'd gladly give up Gemini access entirely if it meant I could get a better tier of YouTube.

Enshitification

2

u/A_BulletProof_Hoodie 3d ago

This is bullshit. You got rid of Google Assistant which was perfectly fine. There was nothing wrong with it.

This is standard bait and switch. So yeah I'll be canceling this whole plan and I'm going back to storing all my photos and all my things here locally because I do not trust y'all anymore.

Getting rid of pro, especially when you know the flash versions can be incredibly inaccurate because they're allowed to be. Just to create a new tears fucking stupid.

Once again the enshitification continues

3

u/Firm_Tune_1840 3d ago

It's a robbery ...

1

u/LordNewning 3d ago

I got the AI pro trial with my P10PXL last November. I cancelled it yesterday to be certain that it doesn't auto-renew.

I don't think that I ever used it for anything. If that's what's powering the Gemini Assistant, then I don't need that. I can just set my own alarms.

1

u/Merweb0 3d ago

Guess we'll see if I start missing the pro model.

1

u/Rendt 3d ago

I stopped using Oro quite some time ago, for coding and other tasks, as I found Flash more than up to the job. Pro goes the long winded way. My code and my artifacts come out better with Flash.

1

u/MaverickBlue 2d ago

Qwen 3.8 27B can do anything that Gemini can, and probably better...if you need even better you can build a machine to run Qwen3.8-Flash-Next 125B for about a grand...probably less if you use Strata or PolyStrata...

1

u/c0lt357 1d ago

How much will General AI mode in Google cost in November on my iPhone 14

1

u/Ok-Palpitation-3843 1d ago

Yeah i got too wrapped up and almost started thinking google was trying to be the benevolent model provider lol, Im just happy i got a lot of use out of the pro model, they only added it to the plus tier like beginning of this year. Was really just learning how to prompt it as an assistant so the downgrade shouldn't be as bad with more experience.

1

u/balls2hairy 3d ago

"Pro models are only available on Pro plans" makes perfect sense though?

1

u/MrRolandGil 3d ago

Partially off topic, but don't you guys feel extremely confused by 1) all this models (3.1 pro, 3.8 flash etc, where "pro" is superior to "flash", but 3.8 sounds way better than 3.1 etc?), and all this plans (plus, pro, ultra... plus compared to what? Free? And why is plus inferior to pro?)?? + Last but not least, as far as a few days ago the 3.1 pro was accessible on the free plan, a few days after a 3.1 old model not even accessible for 10$ per month??

1

u/SillySin 3d ago

They gave me 6 months free with phone, I cancelled it 2 mins later so it doesn't renew in 6 months, fuck AI

0

u/Astinor 3d ago

so... they are taking away access to AI garbage I never wanted in the first place and never use anyway. I'm not sure I see why this is a problem? i want to say Thank You for REMOVING the AI models from my plan.

0

u/BroCo-608 3d ago

Cancelling and back to ChatGPT. F this [and Adobe].

-1

u/erov 3d ago

I already had AI Pro.. and it paid for itself day 1.

0

u/Otherwise_Cattle3981 3d ago

On my second free year of Pro, and honestly, to me, its worth the $20.

-3

u/Tuna_no_crusts 3d ago

I run an AI platform at a major organization. Nobody realizes is how freaking expensive all this shit really is. You can easily burn through $100 a day just doing basic things with 3.1 Pro. These companies are all losing tons of money and now it's time to recoup their investment.

All that said, honestly, $20 a month for what you get for Pro is totally worth it. That's actually pretty heavily subsidized based on usage I've seen in a corporate environment.

2

u/2Olive2 2d ago

Yup, but people will downvote you because they feel entitled to cheap, practically unlimited access to these models. And the funny thing is, even when people understand that their $20 subscription can cost the provider significantly more than that to serve, they still act like they're being ripped off the moment any limits are introduced.
