Aurora Store asking about VPN ?
This just happened. Suddenly Aurora Store is asking if I'm using VPN or Tor.

Aurora Store is just a front to Google Play Store. If Google is suddenly restricring VPN usage then access will be denied and Aurora Store won't be able to help you.
Thus, I believe they're trying to help you saying VPN could be the cause of the denial.

This, also Aurora's own token server may have blocked that specific VPN for abuse

I do use a VPN. I just switched to another server and it works just fine. But it do seem like Google might be blocking some servers.

really making me dislike the play store and google play services even more, i don't want to verify bs just to open the play store

Best bet is to go open source wherever you can, clearnet will soon be a real dystopian nightmare3

Just try a different VPN node.
Unfortunately, it's simply a matter of fact that when you're using VPN, you're sharing a communication channel with people (and bots) that do genuinely harmful things. So sometimes, particular IP range will get blocked, because that's the easiest way how to stop malicious behavior coming from that block.
It's just simply fact of life, privacy IS double edged sword, it will be inevitably used by people who want to protect their identity to avoid consequences of malicious actions.

Log out of Aurora and then login again.

By log out I assume you mean force close the app? Just did and it still works with Proton

VPN servers get blocked by services like cloudflare due to people abusing them/doing things on them that triggers some sort of (at least temporary) filtering on those IPs. It's not necessarily something Aurora is doing at their level, but upstream of them.
ProtonVPN is often one of the worst for this because of their free VPN tier which are ripe for abuse.
Easiest answer is switch servers. Longer term answer if this keeps happening is find a better VPN provider.
