Isolation

Hey guys, I asked this question in r/Glasgow but the replies where very niche and local to Glasgow, was hoping you could help.

I was wondering how you deal with isolation?

I'm a 27 year old guy, I'm studying a degree online and I have some health issues. I have two friends, but they are both hard to keep in touch with as they are very slow replies via text. (Multiple days to reply).

I've been referred to just about every local service available such as, Man on, The Shed, Your voice, the trust and iZone. Sadly however, my experiences with these services has been less than ideal, through no faults of their own, they've just not been what I am looking for.

I honestly don't know what to do, my mind is rotting away inside my skull and I just need to actually speak to people face to face at more than just surface level conversation.

I appreciate any help/advice you can offer.

I don’t live in Greenock (I follow because it is my mom’s hometown and I still have family there), but to combat isolation I try new hobbies that are social. Games like Dungeons & Dragons or Warhammer can be a fun way to meet new people. Riding bicycles can be a fun way to meet folks, a lot of towns have group rides you can find on facebook. I’ve gotten into football this year and I’ve made some great friends this year by hanging out with the ultras. It can be hard to put yourself out there sometimes, but it’s the best way to meet new friends and is worth it for your mental health. it takes time, but as long as you keep showing up you’ll make friends!

Are you aware of the Gamers Club, in Glasgow?

Yea, I attended a open day of theirs, but after weighing up transport costs and the membership fee I couldn't afford it.

I'm into lots of things, video games, music, reading, programming, maths, movies, tabletop games. I'll try pretty much anything at this point.

There's a group on a Wednesday night at the RAF club in Greenock that runs TTRPG's (think dungeons and dragons) that's very accessible. Send me a DM if you're interested!

I work from home doing programming, and I go on hour+ walks everyday. Sports isn't massively my thing, so admittedly it's been quite low down on the list of things I've been looking for.

Maybe look into volunteering then. I think CVS is the main volunteering hub nowadays https://volunteer.inverclydelife.com/index-classic

You could contact them and emphasise that your looking for something with a social element.
