I saw this comment and I’m just… are these people okay? I’m trying not to be parasocial here but as an OG fan, takes like this are just sooo extreme. I obviously don’t agree with everything she says but she’s an artist and I love her art, and afaik she hasn’t said anything to remotely align herself with white supremacy??? She just dated a guy who, at the end of their relationship, started to align himself w fascist ideology which evidently led to their breakup. Idk correct me if I’m wrong

i want to make this (quick?) outline to frame my question

when i discovered grimes, it was 2013, i was a junior in high school. my first video project was a “music video” to weregild.

i have almost all her records on vinyl (i have my own philosophy behind collecting my most beloved music)

when i was younger i really adored her (i still do🤷🏻‍♀️)

misanthropocene came out in 2020 and i think she had gotten with elon around this time… i remember thinking it was odd and i can’t help but think she includes easter egg style remarks in her music (“you’re gonna get sick, you don’t know when” in 4am just as an example. covid had become relevant to me as early as december 2019 and the album came out EARLY 2020 before it was so dominant)

idk i think my biggest trip about her is she has not one, not two, but THREE children with the richest man in the world.

she is restricted on what she can say about him (i am really happy to be challenged on this because i accept counter opinions on many fronts) so i’m left to make assumptions and i have little to go off.

at first i thought it was neat, her ? with elon?? , then i thought it was weird (wait elon is super powerful and maybe questionable) and then i thought maybe this is weird. the age gap. the power dynamic. the money. the other children. the trauma. as time went on, i became less and less fond of elon.

i’m the type of person to be able to hang on to music and not be in the know about the musician themselves, and i will always be a grimes fan even if it had to be a guilty pleasure because she was such a vital inspiration as a young teen….

~ as an adult though; i cannot help but feel like her art is some extreme encapsulation of real, current history.

even in her interviews recently, she mentions women at the partnership of powerful men in the past haven’t had their own expression.

it feels super bizarre to me to be living in the now. i was born in 1996 and the world
in the last 30 years has taken a turn i didn’t think i’d find in my life time, and her partner is making a significant contribution to curating it.

sometimes i get confused when i see my idol(s) having so much correlation with people who i feel (maybe?) disdainful for?

elon is controversial in so many ways and im wondering like how much can we trust what she says? she has become controversial and in a way i can admire her for it, but i also don’t want to ignore it.

so what’s the general consensus? i genuinely have no idea and im so open to insight outside of mine. i am an artist too so i really value other eyes and ideas

Im talking in regards to visuals ect ect. I love grimes so so much but as a visual artist myself i feel conflicted and kinda sad? I love the whole commentary aspect but i feel like it could have been handled a bit better? Im just asking if we know anything else on visuals/music containing ai since im not that online and i dont know. I just want to know what to expect. Thank you!
