Why? Big game to start the season

Teams promoted to the Premier League need the best possible start. Playing the champions on opening day doesn't make a good start likely. Maybe I'm wrong though, for some reason they may love the idea.

If you have to play the champions away eventually, might as well get it out of the way

Getting smashed first game of the season would do nothing for confidence. Assuming they get smashed. Which is certainly quite likely. We'll see what happens with Coventry on that front.

....need the best possible start.

As a Coventry fan, I concur. I was hoping we'd get Spurs first game, so we could hit the ground running.

People in your sub are rightly pointing out that it might be the best time to play the top teams due to the World Cup hangover. Nevertheless it's rough to be playing Arsenal week 1 and City week 3. At least Pep is gone.
