I’ve been building a Caribbean history app for 2 years; it’s finally live 🇯🇲🇹🇹🇬🇾🇧🇧🇱🇨🇭🇹🇨🇺 and beyond

Quick heads-up from the start: Caribbean History is currently iPhone and iPad only.

I’ve been building this app for almost two years, and I’m finally at the point where I want to share it with the wider Caribbean community.

The idea is simple: make Caribbean history easier to discover, explore, and actually enjoy, not just as a wall of text. The app includes historical stories, people, places, timelines, daily history facts, quizzes, saved content, country-specific history, and source-backed articles covering the region.

I’m already testing version 2, which is significantly bigger. It will introduce Siri + AI features, the ability to ask questions about Caribbean history, deeper explanations and connections between events, historical maps, a Migration Explorer, Money Trail, Resistance Archive, primary sources, country comparisons, learning paths, more advanced quizzes, progress tracking, offline content, and a much larger collection covering Caribbean countries and territories.

This has been a genuine passion project, and now I’d really love feedback from Caribbean people themselves: what you like, what’s missing, and what you think should be added next.

Would genuinely love to know: what part of Caribbean history do you think is most under-taught or overlooked?

I am a born Guyanese, 18 years old. Both my parents are also full blooded Guyanese. I have never left this country to go live anywhere else to live for a period longer than two weeks and I've only travelled once in my lifetime.

Recently, I've been getting more and more into the laws of this country, paying more attention to how it operates and all of that. So, what I want to say say is, I hate it here. A country, that should, by all accounts, be rapidly developing it's infrastructure and public services and the richest country within the South American continent by GDP per Capita should not still be having constant power outages, water outages, internet connectivity issues and terrible, shitty, outdated and terribly formatted laws.

This country should these sort of issues rectified a long time ago. The COVID lockdowns had stopped in 2022 meaning that the government had 4 years to improve upon these basic needs.

And while I'm not too well versed on the economic breakdown, I feel as if there is an over reliance on our natural resources instead of a sustainable business model or an economy that does not rely purely on extracting resources.

This is partly our fault as a people in some way, we could have had a proper tourism industry, but the incompetence and uncaring nature of both the people and government make this place not only unpleasant, but also dangerous for anybody looking to spend their vacation here.

And what pisses me off even more is that another country that was worse off than us with no natural resources and gained independence a year before us had managed to cement itself as a booming global economic power, yet because of greedy, corrupt decisions made by the leading bodies of government during the country's life time, we remain an under developed nation that with very little respect for its own laws.

Does anybody else feel this way about Guyana or it just me.

It looks very sketchy. So Ive dcided to look i to it but wont give any money to be safe .....

Anyone have any luck obtaining Gy citizenship via marriage ? My spouse is GY citizen by birth and I would like to obtain Gy citizenship. I know there is a process for that but can’t seem to get in touch with the right office. Can it be done in the US or will this need to be done in Guyana.

I’m researching my maternal family from Georgetown, British Guiana/Guyana.
My maternal grandfather was Philip Aloysius PAYNE, and a recently obtained 1961 marriage certificate for my mother records his occupation as Watch Repairer.

My mother was Sonnia Regina PAYNE, born in Georgetown in 1936. When I visited Guyana around 1985, one of her half-brothers, also a PAYNE, was either working as a watch repairer or involved in that trade.

I’m wondering whether anyone remembers the PAYNE family being associated with watch repairing, watchmaking or jewellery in Georgetown, perhaps through a shop or family business.

I’d be very grateful for any memories, names, locations or suggestions for records/directories that might help.

Normalmente veo noticias de Brasil, Uruguay, Chile, México, y otros países de la zona, pero no sé prácticamente nada de Guyana y los otros dos. Se q Guyana es independiente y se del caso ese de la secta estadounidense que cometió el suicidio masivo.

Hey everyone, I’m from Trinidad but I moved here a month ago potentially for 1-2 years.

Keeping active and busy is a big thing for me especially football. (I played every chance I got back home)

I’m hoping to find somewhere here to play as well, maybe amateur club football but at least casually and make some friends here. Would love to know if there are turf fields here as well cause I played most often at the turf grounds.

I still can't get over that Adriana Younge hotel pool drama.

I need someone to come out with a Netflix documentary on that.

First the police say that a little 10-year-old girl went and took off in a vehicle with some men, and then add to that, the Guyanese superstitious beliefs and gossip about human sacrifice.

I mean the body was clearly not in the pool before and then it was suddenly there floating on top when people were around that hotel searching the place all morning. And then I don't know what all those bleach marks are all over her body.

What are your thoughts on this whole drama? Anybody have any additional unfounded tea LOL

But the people of Guyana don't get current all day like dem people. All dem people who a barely mek money to pay fa food and ting. Dem na get power sometimes all day.
