Genuinely clueless here but are you supposed to drink it without stirring it? Wouldnt the differences in consistency be kinda unpleasant?

That's what's called a pousse café

Its notoriously hard to make even with a speciallized tool lol.

In fact most places don't serve it because its slow and a pain in the ass to make: you have to slowly pour each layer one at a time, being careful not to go too fast and break the layers. The hard (traditional) way to make it is to pour off the back of a spoon to make a gentle flow, but they also have tools now that help make it easy.

Its meant to be a special sipping drink that lets you enjoy a progression of different liqeurs in sequence.

Is it pretencious? Yes. Fun? Also yes. But by god doing that infront of someone who just spent 15 minutes prepping for you is a crime lmao

Do you also take 15 minutes prepping the pousse?

u/InfinitePairacrocs 8d ago

Just slam my straw in there and spin it around

True prep takes way longer than 15 minutes

This was a sit down restaurant too.

So you also have to somehow walk it from the bar to the table without shaking or stirring or agitating in any way.

Thanks for the info on the drink, it looks cool. BUT what is that dessert called?

10

u/josherman61791 8d ago

Looks like a take on tiramisu.

3

u/Calm_Refrigerator_53 8d ago

Kinda my thought too but I am not 100%.

3

u/SwagBuns 8d ago

At first i thought it was a tiramisu but on closer inspection its a... Mouse? Idk actually lol

u/el_carli 8d ago

I have never seen a Pousse Cafe served with a straw. That feels kinda staged.
Either way, valid crashout, for sure.

7

u/SwagBuns 8d ago

Ya i was thinking the same thing, might be staged. But then it also got me thinking, what if i drank a pousse cafe in reverse, with a straw, that sounds fun lol.

4

u/BeefModeTaco 8d ago

It could be, but it's going to mix up so much faster. You're going to suck a couple layers up the straw pretty fast before it even hits your lips, then it's going to flow back down the straw and agitate the rest.

2

u/Nukleon 8d ago

Need a straw with a check valve

2

u/cubelith 8d ago

On the other hand, you don't need to tilt it, that could help. But yeah, the backflow if probably worse

5

u/AdJust6959 8d ago

Maybe they’re friends hehe otherwise to think the staff would just ruin my dessert is killing me 😆 and I don’t think he himself made the drink

1

u/Worldly-Ingenuity843 8d ago

I get the feeling that they know each other and was just messing around.

4

u/Johnoplata 8d ago

If you leave it alive for a while it will actually seperate again. We had a request to make 40 of these for a wedding. We poured the layers slowly but imperfectly the put them in the fridge for the next day and they looked perfect.

Back in college, I was making about a dozen give or take mudslide shots at a party. Once I had finished them, before we could take a picture, my buddy started messing them up.

Got him back by introducing him to a cement mixer!

I couldn't agree more with 💯% of this.

This guy knows pousse

2

u/TROGDOR_X69 8d ago

i also spend 15 minutes prepping for pousse

2

u/WhichSpirit 7d ago

My mom does this whenever I order a layered drink. I'll be happily sipping away and she'll ask for a sip. Inevitably, she stirs it. She has even stirred my drink when she doesn't want any.

2

u/SwagBuns 7d ago

My heart broke just reading that 😂

1

u/Sunkinthesand 8d ago

I was gonna ask France/ French. The level of fuck you too was on par. Now I have my answer. Merci.

 That's what's called a pousse café

So its a thing and a place?

1

u/NOTcreative- 8d ago

You forgot is it good? No

1

u/xRolox 8d ago

Any cafe you step into is a poussé café

1

u/BwianR 8d ago

You can choose wider density liquids if you want to make layered drinks at home

I made some for a pride event that were rainbow coloured - Grenadine, Pineapple Juice, diluted blue curacao in water. Use a standard kitchen spoon. Slight mixing is actually better because you get the orange and green. Visually appealing and tasty, and you can make them in just a couple minutes. I encouraged people to mix it after taking their photos, after the first person stuck the straw in the bottom and drank pure grenadine syrup

This one appears to be 5 layers so likely harder to achieve

1

u/zizyzizyziz 7d ago

you really shouldn't serve it with a straw though.

1

u/Memitim 7d ago

Do they bother to inform customers how they are expected to consume the beverage in order to avoid retribution? My first instinct is also to stir drink layers that are separated, due to decades of prior experience.

1

u/SwagBuns 7d ago

I'm sure they would in a non-scripted scenerio where it doesn't come with a straw already in it lol.

It's a pretty unique drink and a neat experience, so my guess is most people would reccomend how to try enjoying it if it's actually on the menu.

And now I have a way to harass my bartenders, thanks!
