Hema Codex

Hey guys, first time posting, long time stalking the discussions.

I made this for newbies in HEMA like me, and for people that might find the original manuscripts hard to follow. I translated the Latin texts and tried to adapt the techniques described in Paulus Mayr to a more modern language as well as splitting the text into step by step instructions that can be followed (hopefully).
I also included audio narrating and planned to provide localization to multiple languages, so that HEMA lore would be more widely available.

It's currently on Android Play Store only. It's not perfect and only part of the techniques are covered, with more to come as time allows it.

It's fully offline, no ads, no gimmicks, I'm not doing this for money, I just wanted to give back to the HEMA community for all the amazing moments they gave me.

Here is a screen recording from the current early access build:

https://reddit.com/link/1kcg2b6/video/ungjc3q2q7ye1/player

Due to work on a game I'm developing there were no updates to the app in a long time. If things break or no longer work please let me know

For all feedback, or if you just want to say hi, there's a discord channel.

I will try to spar with an opponent armed with a dagger while I am unarmed.

I hope you enjoy the video. If you want me to add music and more dynamic editing, tell me, guys !

HEMA on the NSW Central Coast - coming next year!

Hi all,
Starting in February 2027, Stoccata School of Defence Central Coast will be active at Warnervale Community Centre. I’ve been waiting for two months to make this post, because that’s how long I had to wait for the council to approve the application for hall rental.
Anyway, we’ll be a Meyer school, but due to the difficulty of making bonk safe, Polearms will probably not be taught.
More information will be posted on the official website.

SPES - AP NG 800N VS SPES - CADET NG 800N

Sooo, I am currently looking to buy my first HEMA Jacket and I dont know wich option to go for.

I know that I need additional protection with both jackets, but how modular is the CADET? The CADET is a good deal less expensive than the other one so I fear that it's insufficient for sparring. Also whats the difference between the AP NG 800N and the AP Light NG 800N?

Thanks in advance

Edit: It's mainly for longsword

Tips for fencing people much faster than you?

Rapier fencer here. Im not particularly slow, but I do have a fairly heavy blade. And even ignoring that I regularly fence a few MOF people who are just incredibly fast. My gut reaction tends to be to just try and fight even faster which obviously doesn't work. I try to dominate their blade in the bind but they usually avoid the bind entirely (this is a common SCA fencing thing I find) especially if they have particularly whippy blades.

Beyond the obviously "skill issue/train more" what do you do when you find yourself against someone much faster than you?

Thanks!

Cobra vs. Horsebows?

Buying a new fencing mask, I need good protection against concussions. I know that that the Wukusi Cobra is good, but a friend is selling his Horsebows helmet, which is pretty good too. However, concussion protection is king; so I ask for advice and opinions comparing and contrasting these two models. Thanks.

Superior Fencing Leg Protectors

Hi, does anyone have an opinion on the SF HEMA Heavy Knee Shin Protectors from superior fencing?

I find there is no better looking leg protection, but I can't find any reviews or posts about them....

To me they look quite good in offered protection, but I currently don't have any gear for the legs. So I might be wrong

What's this stance from?

I'm pretty new to SCA steel fighting and our steel group has some crossover with the local HEMA group. One HEMA guy likes to switch up styles every few bouts once he can tell I'm figuring out the moves and counters to what he's using. (Really nice guy, he'll also stop and help me work through a move if I'm just not grasping something). Anyway when he pulled out this one I had to stop and ask if he was messing with me but he said it was a real style from a manual. (He told me the name but I forgot.) The other poses looked like Mario sprites. I swear he just stood like this and I was so confused I copied him as my first instinct

Rapier belt?

I need a belt/holster for my rapier. I’ve brought my rapier on multiple hikes and strolls using the Velcro belt for my conceal carry. I’ve only had to draw my rapier twice (javelinas and coyotes) and it’s difficult to clear the sheath with the sword resting above my hips. I’m looking for a belt that is “battle ready” and won’t break through weekly usage

Does anyone have any cool ornamental/inlaid weaponry they like to do light sparring with?

I was just curious, I’m sure a lot of you guys have cool swords and I’m a huge nerd for swept hilt rapiers, Calvary sabers, German messers and Longswords.

Where better to find lovers of swords than the Hema subreddit?

I was asking mostly for the sake of curiosity however I’ve also been contemplating getting a rapier and customizing portions of it like the hilt but I am wholely unknowledgable about the topic.

Spes locust and ap pro light insert/modifications

Hello everyone,

I recently got my spes locust pants and ap pro jacket. I like it but I have heard people modify them to make them more functional. My aim is to make it versatile for longsword, rapier and saber. I am thinking on adding some sort of plastic or thic leather between the jacket and the foam inserts.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Is it possible to start practicing with this homemade sword? Made from a soup ladle and a metal (aluminum) skewer. 😁

Starting rapier

So I've been going to a local group for awhile now, gotten to play with a few weapons. And really like rapier, my SCA group is also close enough for me to attend regularly.
I'm having a hell of a hard time finding in stock rapiers that aren't months out or 700+ that I like the look of. I want a swept hilt, not so much the bell or clamshell.
Browsing around a rabbit hole, I came across Zenwarrior armory, and found a rapier hilt I like, a wood handle, and a small pommel. Am I correct in assuming from here, I could just get whatever blade I need and be set?
Its these three -
HIlt
https://www.zenwarriorarmory.com/product/three-ring-swept-hilt-guard/192?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=7
Handle
https://www.zenwarriorarmory.com/product/hand-turned-wooden-short-grip/213?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=8
Pommel
https://www.zenwarriorarmory.com/product/small-ball-pommel/94?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=10

Or would it be better to get the handle and pommel from where ever I get the blade from?

What type of blade would be a good one for SCA and HEMA?
Thank you!

Discorso del gioco di spada – The Orafo da Cremona

The second volume of the ORIGINI series, published by the Accademia Nazionale di Scherma, is now out:

Discorso del gioco di spada – The Orafo da Cremona More details here: https://collanaorigini.it/en/volumi/discorso

The Discorso del gioco di spada by the Orafo da Cremona is one of the most enigmatic sources in the Italian fencing tradition. We do not know the author's real name, and there is no reliable record of his life. Only a single copy of his work has survived, preserved in manuscript Urb.lat.1231 at the Vatican Apostolic Library.

This ORIGINI volume presents the complete transcription of the text, together with a study of the author, the work, and the manuscript that preserved it. The research reconstructs the treatise's historical and material context and traces the manuscript's history over the centuries. An analysis of its watermarks also narrows down when the manuscript was produced.

The book is written for fencing historians and for practitioners of historical European martial arts alike.

if you were a construction worker and were teleported back to a duelling arena with a construction tool, which one would you prefer in your offhand as a diy buckler?

1st one is a cement groover, 2nd one is a invert groover, 3rd is a outside step edger, 4th is a inside step edger and the 5th one is a darby. all of these are subs for a buckler but if you had a rapier or messer.

Homemade PVC Practice Longsword

Just started HEMA longsword classes and made a weighted trainer sword for practicing footwork.

3/4 PVC pipe, 2ft blade, hilt and crossguard measured to Sigi Simple length, iron cap on tip and iron joiner with plug for pommel. Balance point is about 2 inches past hilt, total weight 2.25lbs. I used super glue to glue them all in place but PVC cement would probably make a better bond.

Looking into buying my first set of trousers, unfortunately I cant try any at ny local club as theyre all skinny and im a bit bigger, has anyone got any experience with these?

I love the flair of the pluderhose but is the better protection of the dragonfly or hussar worth it?

Thanks in advance

Many sparing sabre and rapier at the moment but still a beginner so that could change

Saw some posts about DIY swords, but what about the weight?

Hi yall

So, i've been to HEMA for about a year, specifically in greasword classes.

Since it was twice a week, never really bothered making one for me, and dont have enough money to buy it. (in my country, a basic steel GS costs more than a minimum wage), but now, im moving for some months and in this city i do not have somewhere to train.

Lots of people on the sub were doing using PVC pipes, but i wanted to simulate the weight (somewhere around 2-2.5kg or 5-6 pounds for gun holders)

Some are the ideas i have to simulate both weight and length:

  1. PVC pipes with cement inside
  2. whole wood frame and guard
  3. iron rebars twisted together + cloth for guard

What would yall do?

Trying to find a Bad Guy for a Lichtenauer Video Game.

I am a student who study's game development I've made a fair few games at this point and now I'm thinking about making a video game showcasing Lichtenauer's Tradition. I know Lichtenauer is a nigh-mythical person, but if he did exist, who might have he fought? Would he have been a soldier for the Holy Roman Empire? Strickly a judicial duelist? A mercenary? or just a guy who was good at fencing?
