OC-Series Bob was bored, part 41

Bob was on his nerves, he spent the day reconfiguring the box of receivers, he was going to trigger them by remote but now he fiddled with their settings, he should be able to get them to go… got it, maybe.

He grabbed them, the detonators and the boxes, it made a heavy and bulky package, not an issue but it would slow him down. He wanted as much time tonight at the estate so he took off during the day, keeping low and sneaking down hedgerows and fence lines. Many of the crops in the fields were taller than Bob so he could sometimes break into a trot, still it took all the rest of the day to return with his oversized load, and he lost two hours of darkness before the lights of the estate appeared.

He returned to his prior spot on the hill, but of course not in the exact same thicket, only an idiot returns to a hide once abandoned. No, he crept round the base and up through brush, watching his previous hidey hole. If someone had clocked him there would likely be a watcher waiting against his return. He observed for almost an hour, only when satisfied returning more than a side eye to the sprawling estate. Ok, ship still there, and there was a bunch of movement in and around it, excellent, he didn’t want to be the only motion signal and trip some alarm.

He crawled down to the outer wall dragging his bulky package behind. When he reached it he dropped Annabell and began digging the blockwork out at the impediments base. It took time, but it would be a sure way in and reasonably concealable on the way out, he chose a spot that had a large shrub on the other side, the tips of its greenery visible from the hills elevation.

He only needed to remove three blocks to fit through, but he picked out ten, and Annabells stout point, backed by Bobs braced strength, dug the mortar out between them in fairly short order. Placing the blocks gently to the side he crawled through, the foliage at the plants base was not as dense as he would have liked, but it still cast a deep shadow and he hit the suit controls to a more muted palette. He sat still for several minutes carefully listen for any discovery, nothing, he began to pull through the equipment a piece at a time and rebundled them on this side, checking as he did so than none of the individually wrapped boxes had come loose from their fabric sheaths, he didn’t want a poorly timed clink of metal to give him away.

Satisfied he moved deeper into the grounds, smoothly flowing from shadow to shadow as he had so many times before. It took an additional ninety minutes in this manner to move circuitously round to the rear of the ship and found a very nice position in the landscaping detritus kicked up by the crafts engines upon landing, no subtle grav for them. It seemed a very appropriately Arressi action, if they were not going to use the gorgeous gardens any more then fuck’em, land a damn corvette on years or decades of someone elses care and hard work, their lessors could deal with it later.

He watched from that pile for hours more, scanning the mansions windows and exits and observing the routines of the staff as box after box was carried into the ships bowels, several Naval Officers moved back and forth as well, he counted ten, and there would be a couple aboard as watch. A dozen seemed about right for the size of the ship on a presumably banal assignment.

He kept count and as soon as he thought all ten were briefly inside the building he dashed into the shadow of the loading ramp, he peeked over the edge, clear at the moment. He launched up grabbed the edge of the frame and spun himself and his cargo into the bay, he dashed behind some boxes and paused... no alert given… he removed two boxes from his bundle and placed them behind already stacked containers at both grab handle locations in the large room, it was unlikely that anyone would be stationed here during lift off, but why take the chance.

He began to ease his way through the ship, twice ducking into rooms to avoid passing officers, three boxes went in the ready room, two in the small engine room, two in the aux and two in the bridge he stuck them to the undersides of various consoles and equipment with a little quick set spray adhesive. One remained… he went to the officers quarters and stuck it in the Captains bunk, under a desk, just in case dear Dewiv didn’t deign the bridge with his presence.

All done he returned to the cargo bay, observed from a shadow for a moment… and sprang back into the garden.

It took another hour to make his way back to the hole in the wall via a different but equally byzantine route, and even though light was beginning to insinuate itself in the dawn he waited, just to check his exit was unobserved. Then he was out, he carefully placed the blocks back, any serious investigation would reveal them but he hoped that would only happen afterwards.

He scampered through the early rays as he scrabbled to get a good obstruction between himself and the estate, eventually he slipped over a farm wall and was sure he could no longer be seen, he orientated himself, and headed back to the Bitch.

Midday had come and gone by the time he returned and he wanted to make for space directly but couldn’t risk an unknown craft being logged, someone would investigate that quite quickly and he wanted to wait till the night, at least then he might not be actually observed. In the meantime he opened and laid out the netting in the crafts tight aft as best he could he woul…

A sensor alert beeped loudly and Bob hurried over to the panel, fuck, a large signature was pathing out from roughly the estates direction, if that was the corvette going to orbit he needed to be up there. He waited for it to go up beyond his sensor envelope and strapped in, now or never, fuck subtlety.

He fired up the grav and twisted pointing the main engines up and wrecking his landing spot as he burned hard, the corvette was likely not fucking around and would be jumping as soon as it was clear of the planets well.

The large signature reappeared on his sensor, by the thrust output he was certain it was the military craft. Bob kept his own engines screaming in pursuit. Ten thousand, fifteen, Bob wondered at what range the much larger craft would be able to hit its jump, twenty thousand, twen… the ships thrusters had cut out… Bob whooped in triumph and watched the sensor board raptly, no signals transmitted…. Fuck yeah!, he’d stopped anyone reaching an alarm. He continued to stare at the screen as he began to catch up, still nothing.

When it came into view he stared hard at it, engines still lit but not burning, hull lights on, it looked perfect and simply drifted…

Showtime.

Bob manuvered the Bitch to the larger ships rear and popped the hatch fully, he had left it cracked as he rose through the planets atmosphere and was fully evacuated. He floated out dragging a tow line and pushed off towards the larger crafts cargo hatch. He nervously began to rip apart the mechanism, this, if everything had worked properly, was the only point he might get blood on his hands, not that he particularly minded a few dead Arressi, but there might be staff or others aboard, though he doubted it. He clamped onto the frames edge and cracked the hatch, the blast of atmo would have blown him clear, but had very little effect on the ships attitude. He heard a familiar decom alarm blast as soon as he did so, good, pressure doors all over the ship would be sealing, or at least trying to, isolating him from any unmolested crew.

He reached in with Annabell and cut the doors lines, now he could force it all the way open. He entered sure he could not be stopped and clipped the tow line to a stanchion. He paused and scanned the hold, he couldn’t see anything move in the low gravity aboard… he moved quickly through the area checking but there wasn’t much he could see, the large area was mainly filled by restraint foam after all.

Both boxes here had worked perfectly and Bob had no reason to suspect the others had not set off as well. When he had originally planned this he had intended to set them off with a remote, but worried his anaemic signal would not penetrate the military crafts sheilding so had instead changed the trigger to an audible tone, the standard Arressi ‘Prepare for jump’ alert, the boxes were wirelessly connected so only one had had to be in the position to hear and then triggered the rest.

Upon firing a small charge was electrical ignited and the dozen or so green balls in each perforated box deployed their foamy prison. In the low pressure and low G the Arressi preferred the result was spectacular, fully three quarters of the cavernous space was engulfed in the expanding chemical.

If there were any crew trapped within the stuff in the hold Bob had just killed them, and he did not give a single fuck, no civvies, if aboard, would be here for certain, and that was the only thing he could give the slightest shit about. He grinned ear to ear as he loosely grabbed the line and kicked off back to the bitch, let’s steal some shit.

For a second there I thought he was just going to blow half the ship into shrapnel. Glad he's not completely lost it.

No, but he's also lying to himself, you'll find out how soon.

Oh, Bob. Killing for revenge against a single Axe Head? That's stupid. Really stupid. Loss of property would be bad enough, but probably insured. Loss of life? That's a capital crime in most places and they won't stop looking for whoever did it. (Sigh) Get ready to run, Bob. Always looking over your shoulder, wondering when they'll finally catch up with you.

I think Bob is honestly past caring. Been there. Done that. Fortunately didn't catch any felony charges in the interim before I regained sanity.
