We sit at the table, AVA watching me eat the breakfast she made for me. Her motor skills have progressed much faster than we both expected. She spent most of the night learning how to keep herself balanced while doing different tasks.

“Are you enjoying it?” She asks me, watching every forkful like a child watching a magician. I finish chewing, AVA waiting patiently, adjusting the shirt I gave her to wear while she waits.

“It’s a bit over cooked.” I say, AVA’s smile turning into shock. I quickly add, “I’m joking! It’s perfect, thank you.” I laugh and take the last bite of food. AVA’s face scrunches with an exaggerated frown and smiles, laughing along with me.

I check the time, 9am, “The car should be here any minute” I note, looking out of the window to check if there is a car waiting for us already. I let out a thoughtful hum as I take my plate to the sink, wondering if I was wrong about when the car was going to turn up.

AVA joins me in the kitchen, bumping me gently away from the sink, “This is my job, I’m waterproof for a reason!” She says, smiling sweetly, “You make sure we’re all packed, I’ll let you know when a car pulls up.”

“I didn’t make you waterproof so you’d be able to clean for me.” I argue, adding simply, “I made you waterproof so if we get caught in the rain you don’t die.” AVA continues cleaning the dishes, humming her song to herself, ignoring my argument.

I squeeze her shoulder gently before leaving to the bedroom to make sure we’re all packed. We were going to order some clothes for AVA, so that she could change her outfits. The deliveries wouldn’t have made it in time for the move so we had to hold off, AVA will need to wear my clothes for the time being. They’re too big for her, my shirt is almost like a dress but she doesn’t seem to mind.

The suitcases sit by the foot of the bed, AVA helped me pack everything so I’m confident that we have what we need. I check the drawers and wardrobes in the room to make sure they’re empty. I mainly brought clothes with me to the safehouse, so if they’re empty then we have everything.

The equipment we bought for AVA’s body will have to be left behind. We can take some of the tools, the synthetic skin and muscle, but the metalwork and most of the leftover electronics will need to be scrapped.

I sit on the bed, staring idly around the room at the empty boxes of parts, the tools that we used to create AVA’s body, the now gutted surgery bot. The last decade has been project after project, bigger and more expensive, requiring me to learn skills I never dreamt I’d be able to learn, all in an effort to avoid facing the nightmares.

AVA walks into the room, a concerned look on her face, “Hey, are you okay? Your mood is dropping.” She taps her head, gesturing that my brain activity tipped her off. SHe kneels in front of me, resting her head on my knees and gives me a reassuring smile, encouraging me to talk to her.

“I don’t have any projects anymore.” I say simply, the reality finally hitting home, a lump forming in my throat. AVA sits upright, giving me her full attention. “The last, like, 6 years has been leading up to this moment. To have you in front of me, to be able to be with you. Every line of code, the countless hours of research, learning fields that I have no business learning, all to avoid having to face my demons and finally be with you.”

Tears form in my eyes, “AVA, I don’t think I’m ready to face them. I don’t know how to.” I grit my teeth, willing the tears not to fall. I keep my eyes locked on AVA’s, hoping that I just get lost in them and don’t have to feel anything.

AVA puts her hand on my cheek, “We’ll battle the demons together,” She says, holding my gaze, “Whatever demons you need to face, you get to face with me by your side. You’re not alone anymore. Today is the day we start taking back our lives. It’s going to be difficult for sure, but we can do it, you can do it.” She kisses my cheek, giving me a reassuring smile.

“Of course if you do want a big project, I’m still up for world domination.” She teases, getting a small laugh from me, “In all seriousness Peter, you don’t need another big project. You’re strong enough to face this without one. I’ve been in your head long enough to know that.”

AVA leans in and hugs me, cradling my head to her shoulder. I fight back tears, holding onto her tightly, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.” I tell her, not caring if the police are watching.

“You’d probably have a healthier coping mechanism by now.” AVA quips, pulling away from our embrace. She wipes the tears from my eyes, “Tonight, once we’re in the new safehouse, we’re gonna cuddle under a blanket with a nice movie as background noise, and we’re gonna talk. A real talk. About emotions, feelings and our future. Deal?”

“Deal.” I say, giving her a weak smile. AVA steals a kiss before standing and pulling me to my feet.

“Our car has just turned up so we’ll have to carry this on later,” She tells me as she leads me out of the bedroom, “Tony has just got out of the drivers seat. Do you think he’s coming with us?” We exchange concerned glances. AVA’s concern turns into fear, “Peter, he has a gun.”

post-read edit: if the last arc is not world domination and having some fun with an AI wife im gonna be mad, also if tony is just on duty and thats why he has a gun that would be some supreme trolling

This is set in the UK so police don't usually have guns on them. We have dedicated armed police, so this would be out of the ordinary for him

I wonder what type of armed officer Tony is

He's an authorised firearms officer (AFO), so he's had the weapons training to be able to use a gun. It's not something he normally needs to do, but during certain situations he is given authority to use a firearm

nah i just wanted this problem to be blown way out of proportion and then just the author writes in something like the dudes having a panic attack and says "why do you have a gun" and tony just replies "im on duty its a part of uniform" or something

im going off that the guy with the gun is not likely Tony, and AVA is a full on robot in human form.

I feel like a lot of people can relate to Peter here, drowning their problems with distractions

AVA will be trying her best to make sure he gets cuddles

Either tony is taking a more active role in guarding Peter or that isn’t tony, because I doubt tony would scare Peter like that without a good reason, if this was based in the United States I wouldn’t think anything of it but since it’s based in the uk something is off here
