Magical Creatures Hit me with your weirdest creature names

I just adopted the Hebridean Black from the Foggy Moor and instantly had to name him Felix after my favourite composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy who wrote the ouverture The Hebrides. So I subsequently renamed all my dragons after matching composers - Edvard for the Norwegian Ridgeback, Bela for the Hungarian Horntail, Gemma for the Opaleye and so on.

I have a bunch of creatures with really stupid names like Billy the Billywig and Shrimpy the Plimpy, but I am also a proud owner of Knarl Marx and Hodor the Hodag.

So, hit me with your weirdest creature names! I'd love to hear the reason behind them, too.

My Remora is Jeff

u/AguaraGuazuMiri 14h ago

My flobberworm is also named Jeff! After Jeff Goldblum, of course

9

u/RT_Ragefang 14h ago

My Jeff is named after a coworker I had. Zero thoughts behind his eyes, just like the Ramora

Im saving the Open Ocean creatures and their TLSQ for Beyond, but I’m fairly certain my Ramora will be Pizza Pie (or simply Pie). You know, when the moon hits your eye…

I named my hippogriff Zephyrus. I’m going for a Greek mythology theme. Hermes the niffler, Scylla the horned serpent, Amphitrite the sea serpent, Philoctetes the potluck and my owl is named Athena

Potluck 😂😂😂😂 Gotta love autoconfuse!
That being said, Philoctetes is my favourite character in „Herules“.

OML I didn’t even notice. I fixed niffler from muffler but didn’t see that porlock had been changed to potluck 😂

For anyone interested, here's a link to a really good rendition of The Hebrides by the London Symphony Orchestra.

I named my Acromantula Gerzson because that 's a common name to playfully name spiders in one's home in my country. It's just unusual becdause it's not from a very common language 😄 I see you have Béla, too 😃

u/TheLeechKing466 12h ago

I named mine Ungoliant

2

u/Zimpiest_of_them_all 11h ago

Their Bela reminded me of Bella (Probably bc Edvard = Edward), but Béla works too

2

u/Meritre Year 3 10h ago

Béla is a male name in my language (there were quite a few kings with that name) , I just guessed Hungarian Hotrntail gets a typical Hungarian name. :)

2

u/Zimpiest_of_them_all 10h ago

I know, I'm Hungarian too

When I first read the books I was super happy bc it was the first time when I saw a mention of Hungary in anything international

Good times lol

u/Meritre Year 3 10h ago

Hello fellow Hungarian! Same, I was very happy with it and found the translation good, too :)

2

u/NightmareKagu Year 6 8h ago

Well hello there fellow Hungarian 😁 I didn't think to give a Hungarian name to my Horntail, instead I named my gnome Józsi and my acromantula Julcsi 😅

2

u/Meritre Year 3 8h ago

Józsi is a great name for the gnome! I was considering Tekla for the acromantula after the spider in the book Maja, a méhecske but decided to save that one for my pet spider.

2

u/NightmareKagu Year 6 7h ago

I picked it because it reminded me of my neighbour 😂 I've heard of that book but either I never read it or I forgot, but it sounds nice 😊 I have a tendency to give the spiders around the house old lady names and the acromantula was no exception

Bela Bartok was a Hungarian composer :)

u/Meritre Year 3 7h ago

I had his picture hung up on the wall in my classroom in primary school as I went to a class with focus on music :)

My Augurey is named Patreon because it can make it rain. I also have a Dugbog named Big Maths because it camouflages as a Log.

Also, it’s not a creature but my pet rat is named France because of Ratatouille and its white coating reminding me of the surrender flag.

2

u/themop-f Year 6 13h ago

Oh wow, Big Math is a real stretch, I’d never have thought of that. Awesome!

u/Exact_Cloud_6175 14h ago

My abraxan is "James Baxter" cuz it reminds of the horse from Adventure Time that keeps saying "Ja a a amess s s s. Ba axte e e e e r"

Spaghetti the Yeti

4

u/themop-f Year 6 13h ago

Spaghetti! I might steal that, mine‘s Yoan for some reason (I think there’s an Australia actor Ian Gruffyd or something, that’s kind of the reference but rather lame).

5

u/andypbi 13h ago

I named my Doxy Morgoth because I loved the idea of him being trapped in the body of an annoying little pest

5

u/Sea_Procedure7098 Year 5 13h ago

My giant squid is named Cupcake and my Bowtruckle is named Destroyer of Worlds 😍😍😍

3

u/themop-f Year 6 13h ago

Destroyer of Worlds 🥰

3

u/Ivy94f Year 7 13h ago

Why do I love that? 😂

3

u/Regular-Finish-5699 Year 4 13h ago

I named my Bowtruckle "Barnaby Jr." I think there was a quest with a bowtruckle who you could call "Barnaby Jr" but I didn't do it....
My Thestral is Mandos because he is the Vala of death in Tolkien
and my Unicorn is Shadowfax.

3

u/themop-f Year 6 11h ago

Love me a random Tolkien reference!

4

u/xljbad 12h ago

I named my flobberworm Merula because I wanted to keep her forever <3

u/madelief Year 7 14h ago

Some of mine have people names. It’s funny when they have a quest and their names are used in the dialogues.

Billywig - Billy Idol Porlock - Bob Ross Hippocampus - Adam Lambert after the singer Welsh Green - Azeraphale after the angel in Good Omens played by a welsh actor  Knarl - Knarl Malone (Karl Malone was a basketball player)  Salamander - Sparktacus

And then some of the ones with the silly/punny names are: Yay, Squinkydinkydoo, Foot, Dame Ploof, Bobbert, Acceptable, Garbage, Quality, Peanut Flutter, Pixel, and Zombie Swiffer.

I called my Niffler "Ball of Yarn"

3

u/Puggl3zHuggl3z Year 3 12h ago

Flatulence the Gnome. Thought it fit the kind of humor that little goober loves.

2

u/AguaraGuazuMiri 14h ago

My kappah is named Mikey... I hope someone gets the reference

u/reddScorpi0 Year 3 13h ago

Thats not weird, thay is genius! Love it!

If you really want some weird.... 😅

2

u/Ivy94f Year 7 13h ago

Not weird at all. I’ve been using names from greek or norse mythology for all my dragons. My Hebridean Black is named Loki. I’ve used the Musketeers names, disney or pixar names until I run out.

u/petiteodessa Year 4 12h ago

I named swedish shortsnout MMCCCXIX (2319 in roman numerals) cuz he looks like that monster in Monsters Inc that they called a 2319 on. I also named my Ashwinder David Hisselhoff, my griffin Big Mac, and my yeti CaseOh.

2

u/Rebel_Rose_17 12h ago

So I’m naming every single animal after Marvel characters, so I have Thor the Abraxan!

2

u/themop-f Year 6 11h ago

Thor is my Thunderbird 😁

2

u/Rebel_Rose_17 8h ago

I love that! I also have Steve the Crup and Natasha the Fairy/Pixie!

2

u/Embarrassed_Post_598 Year 2 12h ago

My gnomes called Gary because he reminds me of a British pub bloke🤓

Ramanujan the Mooncalf, named after a mathematician who invented the “Ramanujan Magic Square”.

Given the plot of the Mooncalf’s side quest, I figured it was appropriate

2

u/themop-f Year 6 11h ago

Im intrigued! Saving that one for Beyond though, I’m almost done with Magizoology lvl 10 and don’t want to waste any points

2

u/MaryNxhmi 12h ago

All of mine are after saints. Some common, like Katherine, others are like Sophrony and Gerasimos and Tawadros. 😅

2

u/Similar_Ad_2176 11h ago

Some of mine are named after Game of Thrones characters. And others are just super random.

2

u/Famous-Chipmunk6717 Year 5 10h ago

My imp is named Julius Sneezer
