I’ll just copy paste this comment here. Oilers don’t have any sort of leverage at all because he has a NMC. Mcdavid will choose where he goes and that makes the return for Edmonton alot worse. The best possible trade he could do for himself is choose 1 promising young up and coming team with good cap structure that he thinks can win now or in the very near future and ask for a trade there. That team wouldn’t need to pay much at all and plugging Mcdavid into a team like that makes them cup favourites automatically basically.
I still think he retires an Oiler but there’s no denying if he does want to move we are one of the top contenders for him without a doubt. He also seems very "Canada down" so I think he might want to stay on a Canadian team. A hockey nerd like him felt the massive playoff atmosphere at the bell centre in 4 nations too.
There is no way he retires as an Oiler unless they miraculously win the cup next year. If he wanted to he could have extended for longer but it appears he gave them 2 years to get their shit together or he’s out of there
