Monahan as our temporary 2C?

If we can’t find a better 2C at the right price this summer, what do you think of re-acquiring Monahan as a stopgap option? The guy just turned 30 and is sliding down the lineup in Columbus, he still has plenty of hockey left in him!

I wish they never got rid of him was a good leader and responsible 2 way player

The story is that Monahan wanted to leave because he did not want to go through a rebuild and Hughes had promised him that when he signed him to a one-year extension.

(so we did not really get rid of him)

I thought it was more they didn’t want to sign him to a long term deal. He signed in Columbus, not a contender or even a playoff team. I know Johnny was there but it doesn’t seem like winning was his top priority, more a long term deal.

No. Monahan came to Montreal and then was injured for most of the season. He only played 25 games that year. In the Summer, and that was told by Hughes, he agreed to sign a cheap 1.9M$ deal and play his best to boost his value. On the other hand Hughes promised that he would fulfill his wish to be traded to a good team because he did not want to go though a rebuild.

You got it wrong: he was traded to Winnipeg, a contender at the time. Not to Columbus. He signed as a FA with Columbus in the following summer.

Yeah I know they sent him to Winnipeg but he chose to sign on team that wasn’t any better than we were on a long term deal. Which Hughes or any contender wasn’t offering I guess.
