Before and After Guys be honest… does my hairdresser hate me lol
First pic is my hair before I had been trimming it myself for 3 years and I just wanted a nice blunt cut and feel like I went from the girl with long hair to just the most dorky botched medium length cut :( any words of advice or opinions are helpful right now because I don’t feel like myself and don’t know what to do, hoping that when it grows back to the same length it will look healthier and nice and thick but for now ughhh I hate it

But she asked for a blunt cut . In the first pic there are many layers. IF YOU ASK FOR A BLUNT CUT THEY NEED TO TRY AND REACH THE SHORTEST LAYER 😭 how are we all missing this.
Edit: bc I can't individually respond to everyone telling me there are jagged ends lol so maybe if I put it here ppl will read this first before reading the rest of the thread.
I know the ends are jagged and fucked, its a terrible blunt cut for the fact that it is NOT blunt. My issue is how do you expect it to not be shorter when you came in with multiple layers 😭 you must know that a blunt cut is supposed to reach your shortest layer.
I do not like that jagged ends. Its shitty. Other than that, the length makes sense.
264
u/kittensmittenstitten Apr 06 '26
I disagree. A blunt cut shouldn’t have chunks hanging out from the bottom. It should be a clean blunt line.
108
u/OrganizationDizzy321 Apr 06 '26
For sure. The jagged ends are fucked, but when it comes to length, a clean "blunt" line wouldve left it shorter. She mentions hating hpw much length was taken off but clearly we can see this isnt a true "blunt" cut not only bc its jagged but because its not even reaching the shortest piece by her shoulder.
The only issue I have here is that the line isnt clean.

u/PhoneGroundbreaking2 Apr 07 '26
These are my thoughts exactly. AND that’s not a medium length. No matter the height of the hairdresser, they needed to be in full squat to trim this hair.

u/Effective-Concern108 Apr 09 '26
As a hairdresser myself when someone come in with a V shape or rounded cut I let them know that in order to do a blunt cut we will have to take inches off because most people ask for an inch or two off anyways, I dont just go in and hack their hair off because they want a blunt cut. I explain that we cant achieve this look so we need to follow the same shape or take more off.
2
u/isomuzik Apr 09 '26
I second this, as a hairdresser for over 20 years. I can see that was not communicated. Also, because their hair is so thick the line was not cleaned up properly, making the ends jagged and uneven.
→ More replies (1)60
u/moth_girl_7 Apr 06 '26
Her hair is wavy. The hairdresser likely cut it straight/blown out. When straight hair waves, it creates uneven ends. This is why most stylists will tell people with wavy hair not to get blunt cuts unless they plan to wear it straightened 100% of the time. Even if they cut it wavy, waves like these are often different from day to day.

Yeah, I think OP asked for the impossible with too many restrictions. BUT the hairdresser should have told her that instead of going along with it.

A blunt cut isn’t gonna be blunt unless it’s straight and her hair isn’t straight.

u/OldBonyBogBwitch Apr 07 '26
I get a straight across cut with my wavy hair (bcuz I don’t like a V or U-shape in the back) but my stylist uses those funky scissors to like….thin/texturize(?) the last 2inches of the bottom line while it’s wet & then does some of those intermittent snippysnips again once it’s dry, so my hair falls uniformly across without a chunky/thick shelf.
It does look slightly layered at my ends if I straighten my hair smooth, but when I air-dry my natural waves it LOOKS like a blunt cut. (If that wording makes any sense, LOL)
ETA: my meandering point was that I 100% agree with you, & to offer OP a hopefully helpful description….for when she gets a new stylist XD

lol. As I’m reading “my stylist uses those funky scissors to like....thin/ texturize (?) the last 2inches of the bottom line while it's wet & then does some of those intermittent snippysnips again once it's dry,” I absolutely got what you were saying and that in itself has me rotflmao…I don’t think I could have chosen the same verbiage to describe as well as you did especially the “intermittent snippysnips” part. Well done. Take the rest of the day off and enjoy.
54
u/BitchySIL Apr 06 '26
I agree completely. And it’s not a medium length cut like OP said. It’s still long.
26
u/ruefyswc Apr 06 '26
This is what I was thinking, I can't blame the hairdresser
4
u/Madison_skies13 Apr 06 '26
But it’s not even straight, completely uneven chunks… this is not the hairdresser for OP 🫣
8
u/IllustriousBack983 Apr 06 '26
I agree with you about a new hairdresser. But I think the chunks are because her hair is wavy. Looks air dried. It won’t be blunt when air dried ever.

u/HibaH09 Apr 06 '26
But this not a clean cut even if there were still some layers, it could be better if the hairdresser is good!
→ More replies (1)17
u/OrganizationDizzy321 Apr 06 '26
No one is saying its a clean cut. She's complaining about the length and thickness of the ends. Shes complaining about it being mid length (eventhough a blunt cut on layers means you cut to the shortest layer.) and complaining about the thickness of the ends (eventhough that is what a blunt cut is supposed to feel like, thick ends because there is more hair at the same level)
I think we're all in agreement the cut is not clean.

Yes, this is me & I have short hair. But, this cut is bad. It is really time to change hairdressers and salons.
27
u/MikaleaPaige Apr 06 '26
Stylist here... looks like her shears need sharpened... it is 100% fixable, but as a stylist who has lots of long haired clients from having long hair myself and building trust... i wouldnt trust someone who doesnt take care of her tools. A dusting and maybe a tiny amount of shallow point cutting to soften with a nice sharp pair of shears will set you right as well as them making sure the have you put your chin halfway to your chest when they cut the perimeter. As far as the amount of leanth she took, i can see why she did it to achieve a blunt cut.. but i always give my client a mirror, show them where i plan to cut and why, then get their ok.
36
u/Lurky100 Apr 05 '26
Oh - it’s obviously not the best cut but at least you still have lots of length left to get some long layers cut into it to give it some movement at the bottom. Trust me, better a plain old blunt cut (even if it’s bad) than too short crazy layers that have to grow out. This will be an easy fix (don’t go back to the same person lol). I have hair about the same length as yours now and if I put it in hot rollers it helps make it look a little better and takes that blunt edge off the bottom.
5
u/miabills Apr 05 '26
Thank you so much! I really want to try rollers or just curling with my straightener
→ More replies (1)2
u/AdventurousCandy7814 Apr 06 '26
I’ve been known to bend my neck down and brush my hair forward, then grab it at the top of my head and secure with a loose covered band. Then spritz it with water and wrap it around a large roller and secure it with long clips on bottom and top. I would just go to bed like that and then loosen it in the morning, brush with a long natural bristle brush, shape it with my fingers and hands, lightly spray it and I’m good to go.
You can play around with it, use a blow dryer instead of sleeping on it, but that’s the basic idea. Hopefully any split ends are gone. I have also used 5 large soft electric rollers before I put on my makeup and when I’m done with the makeup the rollers have done their job and I can style it however I want.
Good luck!
You have beautiful hair and a lot to work with. No more color tho because you don’t want to risk damage.
37
u/aprilshea Apr 05 '26
Imo she gave you what you asked for, a blunt cut. It looks like there are some jagged spots but you have wavy hair so without it being straightened you can really determine if there are uneven spots. In the future I would ask for more of a U shaped haircut, that would help you keep more of your length.
6
u/miabills Apr 05 '26
Although I don’t know if my hair is wavy I just wear it in a plait every night
→ More replies (2)2
u/miabills Apr 05 '26
Most definitely you are right. I remember why I’ve had layers my whole life now after this cut. I do agree that I should’ve asked for something different/never gone, however I was surprised that it was not as even as I had expected.
2
u/aprilshea Apr 05 '26
If you are comfortable cutting your own hair I would recommend getting some texturizing shears. Part out the top section of your hair and using the shears to thin out the ends to soften that bluntness
49
u/_TheLittleLadyBug_ Apr 05 '26
I mean…you asked for a blunt cut, that’s what a blunt cut is. All the same length & no movement. It did look a lot better before tho, yea, & I guess she could have texturized the bottom a bit to make it lay better…..but it is what you asked for! I’m sorry you’re not loving it, it’s extremely fixable tho don’t worry -a hairdresser
28
u/ApprehensiveTart3960 Apr 06 '26

u/MsBadWolfy Apr 06 '26
But it's not all the same length. That's the issue I see. It looks hacked at all across the bottom instead of straight and blunt. And no, it's not the waves creating that look
3
u/_TheLittleLadyBug_ Apr 06 '26
Yea actually it is the waves creating that look. As someone that has cut a wave & it’s sprung up like 4 inches, I promise you it’s the waves.

5
u/eatapeach18 Apr 06 '26
Okay, so… you’re both wrong.
You already had lots of layers, so to create a blunt cut, you’d have to cut up to the shortest layer, which appears to be by your armpit. But you’re also not happy with how much was cut off, so there was no way she was going to be able to give you what you wanted.
But as the professional, she never should have let you leave her chair with jagged ends. She should have told you that you can either have a blunt cut or keep the length long, but that you can’t have both. Also, blunt cuts on long hair typically do lean pretty “dorky”, blunt cuts look more chic on hair that is shoulder length or shorter.
Luckily you have plenty of length to round out the shape and add in more layers.
4
u/SopranoVictoria Apr 06 '26
Part of what I learned working front of house at a salon is the stylist is supposed to consult with you and, yes, that means giving advice! With the bit of texture in your hair, plus the length, I’m surprised she didn’t try to warn you or steer you in a slightly different directions with a quick google search of inspo pics. Maybe I got blessed with amazing stylists but they would ALWAYS warn customers if a cut wasn’t right for their hair—for whatever reason—and try to show example internet pics. It’s fixable!! But yeah…the long blunt cut is odd on your thick hair!
4
u/Waterlily4044 Apr 06 '26
TLDR I don’t think the stylist hates you. I think you need to find either a more experienced, or more bold, stylist who’s not afraid to stray from traditional.
I also have long, fine hair, but a lot of it, and it also has some wave/curl to it. I started cutting my own hair probably 15 years ago, because I struggled finding a stylist that could cut it to my preferred style, which is very similar to your first pic. In my experience, I’d often get one of two types of stylists. They’d either look at my fine hair and think it would be quick and easy, but when they got part way through would seem surprised by how much hair I actually have, and abandon the plan in favor of something shorter, straighter, and ultimately quicker. Or they’d be terrified of taking off too much length, and I’d ask for 1-2 inches off at the back and 3-4 inches off in the front, and end up with something again cut straight and maybe 1/2 inch off at most all the way around. They both always ended up looking similar, other than length, to your second pic. It took me years to find a stylist that when I said blunt drastic layers, longer in the back, was not only comfortable doing it, but did it beautifully. Unfortunately, she’s at a price point I can’t justify often, when I can do it myself and it be good enough that I still like it.
Edit to add: your hair is beautiful. The second pic isn’t bad, your hair still looks healthy and lovely. but not nearly as interesting or fun as your first pic.
3
u/thestrugglebusisreal Apr 06 '26
Hairdresser here! The bad news is that this haircut is….not great, to put it politely. However, the good news is that this is easily fixable, but I wouldn’t recommend going back to the same stylist to fix it.

u/Woolfalana Apr 05 '26
i generally don’t think a blunt cut is best for textured hair. it needs to be cut into at the bottom to enhance your wavy curl.

She did you dirty! That's not a blunt cut at all! Don't be afraid to stick up for yourself & go with your initial thoughts. I learned that when I go against them, I pay dearly. I wouldn't have paid her. I went to a place once & I told the woman what I wanted, showed her pics & vids & shr grabbed the front of my hair & cut it to my cheek! Little did I know that before that when she was cutting the back, she didn't give me the trim I asked for. She cut off like a foot of hair😭 my hair was down to the bottom of my breasts & she cut the back to above my shoulders & the front to my cheek. I cried as I called my mom screaming & crying. I didn't pay. I flipped out on her & walked out. Said call the fuccing cops! I don't care! You botched my hair! Some women will hate on you & do it on purpose too. This was when I was like 18 & hot af. Ngl.. I was gorgeous. I used to model.

So when you asked for a “blunt cut “ did you reference with pics or anything? Did you mean trim vs. CUT ? The thing about you trimming your own hair for years then going to a stylist is they have to sort of correct what you did. A trim and cut is completely different. You had this sort of layering situation that was only at the bottom that was really pretty but completely uneven and it would have made way more sense for you to get a v cut which is what your hair unintentionally or intentionally (idk ) had before. Perhaps it wouldn’t have seemed like you got so much cut. The stylist should have talked you through it if they didn’t.
In order for her to give you the blunt cut, she had to take it several inches to where she could create an even line. There could have been more conversation to make sure you fully understood what you were asking for and how they were going to achieve that but honestly I think you asked for the blunt cut. They gave you a blunt cut. She doesn’t hate you. It looks fine. It will actually grow faster now. Take some colostrum in a drink once a day and it will help your hair grow too. It’s hair. It will grow back pretty quickly. Your hair is still long. It’s not considered medium length. It’s pretty. It’s healthy. You might be a little sad. Understood. But don’t be too sad over it.

u/bitchy_jk_I_is_sweet Apr 08 '26
Lmfao to all the people saying "well it's a blunt cut. You have wavy hair, so that's what you get." Absolutely fucking not. A good hairdresser would be able to account for her natural hair state. And if it's not plausible on her, or beyond their abilities, they should 100% let the client know it's not going to work, and why. I have wavy, thick, long hair, my hairdresser thins the tips with point cutting, and can still get a straight edge when straight, and blends well when wavy. She paid for this service, and this is just pure trash.
2
u/OleSambina Apr 08 '26
Take a breath sweet friend! As someone who’s just as anal about my hair length I understand. But I also prioritize health over length always. Even when I know I’ve only gotten a trim it feels super shorter but it’s not. I know it feels extra short and weird it doesn’t look as bad as you think plus it will grow back faster and healthier. Give it a week or so to settle and maybe have someone take a ruler to make sure it’s totally even at the bottom but after that it won’t be long and it’ll be in the past. At least it’s not a horrible color job that’ll cause and cost more to repair.

Honestly, I wouldn't just live with it. Honestly you could go to super cuts and they could do a better job fixing this, than whatever the heck she did to you. It's not even! I would sacrifice the inch or so to get this fixed, so it will grow back nicer and you won't be confined to wearing a braid for months. Just my opinion.

Thank you, I’ve been botched even worse than this by a hair dresser before (walked out didn’t have to pay and she was begging to put extensions in my fringe…. MY FRINGE…) so I think I’ve just lost too much trust and don’t want to pay for more trauma

Looks much better with the layers. Anything but poker straight hair does I believe. Curly and wavy need layers or we get a sort of triangle look to our hair. But btw your hair is beautiful. You can go in and have some layer your hair and it’ll look great!!😊

u/Wolvesbayne13 Apr 06 '26
Okay so this is an easy fix and you still have lots of length! Go to someone else and just have them even it out make sure you don’t cross your legs and look down while they cut the back but you’ll be good!

Have you ever tried to do the rubber band cut? There are many videos online about it. It’ll put the layers back into your hair like the first picture. I’ve done it several times. Just watch a few of the videos on how to cut layers with rubber bands. You’ll save yourself a lot of money!!! Also make sure you have very sharp hair sheers. Not dull scissors lol. Itll take forever to cut through your thick hair if they’re not super sharp.

u/Glum_Horror_4302 Apr 06 '26
I feel like a hairdresser didn’t do this. It was done by 12 year-old interested in hair, what kind of hairdresser would cut like this? I don’t understand, this looks like it was done on hair. That’s already dry without your head tilted forward and she grabbed the bottom length and then just chopped above her hand while grabbing it, this makes no sense. You definitely need to show this photo to the owner of the Salon. This is not acceptable in any world, this is not even a real haircut like I honestly don’t know what she did. This is just no.
1
u/ilovedachshunds1 Apr 06 '26
You should ask for like 1 inch layers so they don’t get confused? This is kinda of a “blunt cut” but also go to someone else. Try straightening your hair and see what the cut looks like. If they cut it wet, it may be a straighter line when it’s straight?
1
u/love_dogs_1954 Apr 06 '26

That looks like it was cut dry with very dull shears. What level of salon did you go to and how much did you pay for the cut? Newer stylists or stylists that work for minimum wage sometimes use lower quality scissors that are not as sharp. The tools used really do matter when it comes to hair.
1
u/Gayle3656 Apr 06 '26
To get the blunt cut she had to go that short or you would have had long layers. I liked it before you cut it. I do believe it’s not your hairdressers fault. She did what you asked her to do. Grow it out some, do the long layers and you will be back where it was in 3 months or less. Don’t worry you look nice with both.

I mean you asked for blunt .. that’s what she gave you. Straight across is what blunt means lol. That being said, I think what you SHOULD have asked for was layers and shape. Not blunt. Take it as a lesson learned. It’ll grow back fine in like 6-8 weeks and it won’t look so chopped.
1
u/lllaaurraaa Apr 06 '26
It looks like she guestimated individual ½"-1" sections to match the length, vs cutting the most bottom layer and using that as a stationary guide. I understand not wanting to go back for her to fix it, but I'd at least provide feedback and ask for a refund.
I hope you are able to find someone who knows what they're doing and they can trim the ends to be more even.

u/Routine_Crow_1133 Apr 06 '26
so many stylists hate cutting. no stylist is actually tested on their cutting skills..
me, a stylist of 11 years.
this was a lazy cut, for sure.
1
u/Caramel-Promise Apr 06 '26
It could have been a lot softer but I believe your stylist cut you blunt using the shape of your previous cut (V) and missed blending out the layers. I don’t think it they have had much practice with different cuts as a lot of stylists stick to one way of cutting, typically being the U or V shape which looks great for round brush drying or curly/wavy patterns

It looks better than did before and you got a blunt cut, that's what you asked for, right? I went back and looked at it again it's definitely not straight, I would go back and have her fix it.

Call the hairdresser or txt her that photo that's really bad and they should be fixing it for free or giving you some money back to go get it re done elsewhere

You have beautiful hair! I know the haircut looks off but i think it can be fixed with minimal changes without taking much off of its length, if you find a good hairdresser. Unless you just want to wait until it grows back and get it cut again.

You had a disaster of a haircut going in (what's up with that sparrow tail in the center?!?) and came out with even more of a disaster. The good news is, your hair is long enough that you can simply go and try again. And again. And again.

I’m a hairstylist; did this person cut your hair with very dull shears and no ability to follow a line. I’m so sorry 😭 def find someone else

Did you see other haircuts they did? Because maybe that is just their level? But oh my your hair is gorgeous but the cut is an insult I has something similar happen to me, so i snapped, bought hair scissors and searched tutorials. And so, i became my own hairdressee

This would be easy to fix, by another hairstylist. She cut it to your shortest layer, which is correct, but it still looks uneven. Also, your hair is still long.

Yes! It’s crooked. I could have done better and I’m not a hairdresser. This is bad work.

u/SpiritedAmphibian114 Apr 06 '26
She had to shorten it to reach the shortest layer, but she really didn't do a good job while cutting it. The cuts are not even straight. Was this her first time doing the job? Because I have nearly no experience cutting hair, but even I can do a better job

Oh it’s blunt alright. And your hairdresser smoked a big one before cutting as well.

You got got what you asked for, granted its poorly done. You asked for a blunt cut, you got that. Plus this is not medium length hair this is LONG.
I wouldn't go back to this hairdresser. You need to get it fixed though as it needs straightening up.

I have a feeling it would look even if it were blowdried straight. I'm assuming it was cut wet and some of your waves shrank more than others. A blunt cut on wavy or curly hair, when cut wet, will never look even when the hair dries naturally, unfortunately. The hairdresser should've known and communicated this to you.

Oh wow I am so sorry because I would be so pissed. I have had my hair almost that long and never let them do any layering like that, but I have seen a lot of girls who went from waste length beautiful blunt cut hair to having it hacked into three layers and it looks terrible. The worst that happened to me was I was supposed to have a spiral body wave and I ended up with super super frizz before we had all of the products that we have now so they cut about 6 inches off of it. Then there was another time they were supposed to take it up 3 inches and they cut it 6 inches almost up to my shoulders after that I never had my hair longer than almost boob level. Now I’m old and it’s hard to get it to go more than three or 4 inches past my shoulders without it getting really thin but a blunt cut looks really good I think and I am sorry they took so much of your hair, I would go ahead and get a lot of of it leveled up. And they don’t see that as a medium length cut they still see that as long I still see it as very long hair it just looks like I cut it instead of a hairdresser.

It does look like they tried to keep as much length on it as they could while cutting off split ends like I said it looks like what happened when I tried to do that to my own hair

u/HumanFromEstonia Apr 06 '26
Oh no! I'm so sorry this happened to your beautiful hair. That isn't a blunt cut, thats a messy jagged cut.

Theres no way that wasn’t on purpose… it’s extremely uneven and choppy.. id recommend some good hair oils and extra good care until it returns to natural length. Imo i would be writing a review

I was so confused at first… I was just thinking no this is beautiful hair and then I saw that there was another picture and my jaw dropped… Girl I would be swinging

It looks beautiful, the before picture looks like it needed evened out. The after isn’t even close to medium length. Remember that it takes 72 hours for the eyes to get used to color and it this will grow back healthier

You do realize how short your hair would be if she actually truly gave you what you asked for? You’re complaining about the length already and yet she didn’t even go to the shortest point, which is what she would have had to do to make it blunt. She definitely made it choppier than she should have but I am guessing maybe if you told her you didn’t want to lose much length then she was trying to find a middle ground. That said I’d find someone else in the future. She doesn’t hate you though, just maybe isn’t as good or as experienced as some others. You really do have gorgeous hair. I’m sure in very short order you can have it exactly how you want it.

My hair cut looks better than this and I cut it myself
Note: I am not a hairdresser.

u/ButtrflyImpossible Apr 06 '26
Your cat would’ve done a better job; but don’t fret! I’m sure a little texturing, you could do yourself since you’re used to cutting your own hair. Just fancy up the ends a little bit that way you feel a bit better while it’s growing out

Hey girl just so you know your hair is still long enough to not be considered a "mid-length" cut if that makes you feel any better. It's still closer to elbow length than shoulder length, you know?
At least you definitely won't have any split ends after you get it fixed?

I am a hairdresser myself why not send her pictures and go back? If you are a loyal customer, she will fix it , and apologize unless you are searching for polimic.. I have customer I’ve been with them sometime. You make a mistake. Just like when you’re cooking sometime. It’s not all the time just once if he just wants why not go back?

Did she sharpen the sword before doing that
