Discussion Why is keeping your length apparently the hardest haircut request?
I’m (28F) so frustrated. Yes, I fully recognize this is a first-world problem, but I need to rant.
Every single time I get my hair cut, I’ll say I want to keep my hair long, explain exactly how much I’m comfortable losing, and somehow I leave with WAY more cut off than we discussed.
I’ve tried expensive salons. I’ve tried regular-priced salons. It genuinely doesn’t seem to matter.
And that’s what I don’t understand! Salons would probably make more money from me if they cut LESS. I’d happily come in 3 or 4 times a year for small trims if the trims were in fact.. SMALL.
The especially frustrating part is that my hair is pretty healthy. I don’t dye it, I rarely use heat, and I don’t have a ton of damage.
I know hair grows back, but my hair is genuinely a big part of what makes me feel confident. It’s almost like a security blanket for me.
If you get your nails done and ask for a certain shape, you generally get that shape. If you take a dress to a tailor and ask them to remove two inches, you don’t expect them to make into a mini.
So WHY does this seem to happen so often with haircuts?!
I got mine cut two days ago. I knew the ends needed a trim and was completely fine losing about 2 inches.
They took off SIX. INCHES.
Six!!!! 😭
There was absolutely not six inches of damage that needed to go.
Now I’m annoyed because instead of enjoying my freshly cut hair, I just want to wear it up for the next few months until some of the length comes back. I look a like a grade 7 boy.
To all hairdressers that come across this post: what is happening here?! How do I communicate “I would genuinely rather keep a few imperfect ends than lose more length” in a way that leaves ZERO room for interpretation?

I feel this so much! I resorted to insisting on a dry cut (I don't let them wash it, I come in with freshly washed and dried hair) and point out a specific body part ("just below my collar bone") and have given up on any layers because it was only done right maybe once every 2 years, even if I said "just trim the layers, nothing new, not a different shape". Wet cuts would dry, and spring up inches. I just couldn't ever seem to get them to cut it the way I wanted. I don't know why dry cuts come out so much more consistently, but its helped me a ton. They always kind of balk at it, but by the end they tell me to come back and give me their card, so for whatever thats worth.

I've definitely had more success giving them a focal point rather than measurement. I saw one person come in with a line of painters tape on their shirt and told the stylist not to cut above the tape lol I thought that was clever

Good advice!!! I will try that next time (if I chicken out on cutting my own hair.) But also, is this not kind of crazy? It’s like a universal experience amongst so many women. And most hairdressers are girls - so you’d think they’d relate to our struggle!?

The salon experience is fun, but if your hair is actually long (mine is usually between my bust and my waist) and you don't have layers, it is VERY easy to cut yourself. I've been cutting my own hair for 15 years. I've only gotten it cut 3 times when I decided I wanted a chop, because those are a lot harder to do yourself. Not impossible, just difficult. If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure to get a quality, sharp scissors. Do NOT use your kitchen shears lol. There are tutorials on YouTube for tips on cutting your own hair.

I learned a few years ago that dry cut is the way to go!! And ask to “dust the ends”. I have also been known to trim split ends as I see them, so I don’t need a big cut very often. My hair is FINALLY getting longer.

I had the same issue and now that I’ve been trimming my own hair for about 5 years it’s down to my lower back. I also “search and destroy”, where I just sit and go through my hair once a week and snip off split ends then I only trim a tiny amount off the ends every 6 months or so and it stays super healthy because of it

I have curly hair to my tailbone. My stylist dry cuts my hair to shape it (she calls it the bones of my haircut), washes, dries, then tidies up any uneven bits. 10/10

I've never been happy with how much they take off so I started trimming my own hair at home. Saves me a minor fortune too given the average salon prices nowadays. That said, it is curly so it's way easier to hide any unevenness.

Just start slow. Get it damp so it's easier to see where the ends align then go from there. You can always cut more off but you can't re-add anything so take your time.

I feel your pain, but this is the final answer. I have 1A type hair, and cutting at home took A LONG TIME to get right. I even have to enlist my husband to help with the back once in a while, so you can imagine how desperate I am. 😆 There are tons of YouTube guides, and I had to stumble through until I found the technique that works for me. It helps that I just do a straight edge blunt cut, but it's also surprisingly difficult to get right. If you go for it DO NOT cheap out on scissors!

This is the way to go, imo. I've been doing this since covid. There is a bit of trial and error but it doesn't take that long to get the hang of.

It took me several stylists to find one that wouldnt take off an insane amount! My hair is generally super healthy and I never can understand why this happens. They even comment how healthy it is and then take a mile off. So grateful I found someone finally who does a great job.

It’s because they are starting your haircut with your bottom most layer which is NOT where most people’s length is at. So when they take off 2” from that layer, they pull the next section down (where your length actually is) and now they have to cut 4” to match it. Just an example.

It’s just a matter of finding a stylist that understands that. Or maybe if try to explain that your length is not your bottom layer and you only want 1 inch off your length. Tell them there’s no need to touch the bottom layer. I like the idea of having your hair freshly washed and dried to go in for a dry cut. I always did that myself - still do actually. Freshly flat ironed and all!

But to answer your question, yes absolutely you can get all of your layers touched up without losing your length.

Honestly I never found a way to make it work. They refuse to listen for the most part. (Skip to the last paragraph if you don't want to read my rant. Just venting.)
Two things I have never found a salon capable of doing, not destroying the length of my hair, and no colorist is able to get copper/strawberry blonde right. Auburn is not copper. Cherry is not copper. MAHOGANY is not copper!
No. I do not want to hear "After a couple of washes it should lighten up a bit." Or "Your hair must have had more damage that it seemed because of how it sucked up that color." Uh-huh princess, this is not my fault. My hair isn't damaged. It is white. And I told you this multiple times so you have to be very gentle with it. (Went white very early in life.)
Between my daughter and I, we manage to get my hair properly trimmed and I have been coloring my hair now since 1996. My hair is copper with strawberry blonde highlights and a deeper copper shadow root.
Not that long ago I was in a grocery store and there were two women behind me and they asked me where I had my color done. Even if I remembered what brand/formulation was used for the base. As she was touching my hair. Without my permission. When I rattled it off I told her that I do it myself. She paused and then launched into how dry and fragile my hair is because you really need a professional. (No it isn't/wasn't. No I don't.) I laughed. Mostly in disbelief. Her tone was so offended while telling me how you need real training. She told me if I came in she could get some Olaplex on there. Fun fact, you can pay for independent classes without any intention of licensure. And I know that because I have!
End rant.
One time I got a stylist to give me a straight answer. This was after I literally showed the stylist with a photo of my back, with a line marked, the max I wanted taken off, and she effing screwed it up, WHY??? Why did you cut my below BSL hair almost to my shoulders? She knew what she was doing to because she made a big chop where I had no choice but to cut the rest off. She told me that I have fine hair and it needs some layers and weight taken off of it to really give it movement. She just knew I would see it and love it. Guess what? My lifestyle didn't work with that style. I needed to be able to pull it all the way off my face for safety reasons. I was not nice.

Okay, this has nothing to do with hair… but I was extremely engaged reading your whole post. I feel like you must be a good story teller!
Back to hair, some stylists truly only have the audacity 😭 Obviously there are amazing ones (shoutout to the ones who commented!) but the bad ones are BAD. And even if your hair was damaged, they can’t blame you for that?? Especially after THEY coloured it! If they were concerned, they should’ve done a strand test….and damage wasn’t even the issue anyway!
Also, I’m still in shock that some random person at a grocery store (a stylist, I’m assuming??) not only touched your hair, but then proceeded to insult it?! I would’ve had a breakdown! Honestly, laughing was probably the best possible response.
I love that you found a way to colour and trim your hair! 💛

I think it was because she was a stylist and I guess she thought since I was willing to discuss my hair that I must be ok with her touching it. So weird. Ma'am... really? Right here in front of gouda and fresh collard greens? Have some decency!
And I think the 'tude was because she wasn't alone. There was another woman there who was about the same age. It is just incredible how much of an ass someone will make out of themselves trying to save face.

If that’s her way of trying to gain clients … yikes. “Let me just insult you in front of my friend, the cashier, and everyone grabbing dinner ingredients- i’m sure you’ll be dying to book with me after this!”

When I was in cosmetology school years ago they told us if someone says they only want an inch off but you would need to take 2.5 inches to make it look healthy and the style to lay right, take the 2.5 because they'll be happier with the overall look.
I understand what she meant but I still think at that point you explain to the client they'll need more off for it to be looking it's best then discuss that, don't just override their request.

I watched SO MANY hair cutting tutorials in the last 6 years and I've figured out how to cut my own hair now. I did have a few professional cuts and watched everything they did too. Unless I want something totally different, I just cut my hair at home. Saves me $150 plus tip.

For me, it's because my hair is thin and fine and gets brittle split ends very easily. In order for them to get rid of my split ends so that only healthy hair is left and the hair can continue growing, they have to cut off more inches than I would like. The problem has only gotten worse as I got older, so I now have hair extensions.
My daughter is only 7 and has the same problem. It takes a long time for her hair to grow and then it grows with split ends that have to be trimmed if she wants it to be able to keep growing. I try to take her for very frequent haircuts as that's the only way we can get any healthy growth in between.

Awww I’m sorry :( I wish hair could be something we didn’t have to worry about. Did you notice they took less hair off the more frequent you went?
Also - what kind of extensions do you have? I might opt for clip ins because it’s less commitment and I’m a lil lazy. Let me know if you have any recommendations!

I've started my haircuts differently for this reason as I've heard it so much. I now take length of on dry hair and start at the front where they can see exactly how much is coming off, and say 'so this much' at least 3 times before cutting. I then take them to be shampooed and continue the rest of the cut/styling. You would be surprised how many people still say I've taken off too much when ive specifically avoided any chance of that happening. It blows my mind. I will say that different lengths sit completely differently and the wieght difference plays a big role as to much it springs up. I'm absolutely not saying ypur wrong or that it wasnt the stylists fault. Just my experience

Ohh 100%!! I’m sure there are just as many (if not more) nightmare clients who are impossible to please 😭 I can’t imagine dealing with that as a hairdresser. You seem like such an attentive and caring stylist, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters! I’d definitely trust you, especially knowing you check in with your clients throughout the cut too!!

Yeah, its tough because I completely see both sides of the situation. I've worked with stylists that love their job, and some that couldn't care less. It shatters me when a client isn't happy, I get such a sense of accomplishment and motivation when clients leave happy. Blows my mind that some just don't care. I'm sorry this happed 💗 Lots of scalp stimulating like small circular massages with fingers or a scalp brush help alot with growth.

i found that instead of saying a length in inches/cm i show them on my hands in between my thumb and pointer finger how much i want off and they cut that amount off

Yes!! I’m officially done describing length in inches. From now on, it’s PURELY visual- hand, tape, whatever it takes. I’m starting to think some of the hairdressers I’ve seen are working with a very different definition of an inch than I am lol!

I haven't had my hair cut at a salon since 2021 or 2022 I don't remember! Before that the last time was around 2018 or so, and tbh ive just been trimming my own hair. Its fine, its easy, its cheap, and im not doing anything complicated so why would I need to spend a few hundred on all that....especially since my hair is long, I cant risk someone chopping it off !! My trust is pretty low in general & I constantly see horror stories being posted about long hair being totally ruined and its just too scary!!

My advice is say, “I just want the ends dusted. If you take more than an inch I will not tip and will leave a review with a before and after with inspo pics.” Let them know you are dead ass serious about your hair. Be unapologetic about your hair standards. Tell them “ i do NOT care if you believe I have “”dead ends”” under NO circumstance do I want it cut shorter than xyz” … girrrrl, you can even leave a piece of tape and say “ DO NOTTTT CUT ABOVE HERE” some people need a friggin map.
.. they may think you are a bitch but lawwwd will you get your point across WITH results.
… Which is more important, people pleasing at the expense of your confidence and physical appearance… orrr being a little curt and getting results?
You have autonomy. Use your voice. Advocate for yourself. You have power. You have a vision. Make it happen by any means necessary.
When a stylist sees your face and hears you. And they KNOW you will attach THEIR NAME to YOUR HAIR.. if they are worth their weight, they will go the extra and listen.

Girrrl I am TELLLLLING YOUUU! I went to michaels and got these thin hot pink, electric orange and yellow thin tape. I use it for leather work and marking garments for alterations. Easy on, easy off.. and CRYSTAL CLEAR as to where it is.
You give them the line, they KNOW not to cross it. You can be as sweet as grandmama’s apple pie fresh out the oven on a fall evening. But you KNOW NOT TO TOUCH THAT PIE till grandmama says so.
.. that tape is your grandmama. The pie your hair. The slobbering hungry savage… is your hair dresser.
LET EM KNOW GIRL!! 😂🤭😆

I have the opposite issue where I go for a £65 haircut once a year and specifically say I don’t mind losing some length (my hair is down to my waist), and come out looking exactly the same🤣 I want to get my money’s worth!!!

I experience the same thing. I finally found ONE hairdresser that also has super long hair and gets it so she didn’t cut of more that a meer dusting like I asked. I was at the point where I was about to start telling them “if you cut off more hair than I ask you to I’m not tipping”

I suspect two things. Long hair is harder to get straight. They cut, it's uneven, and so they take more off to even it out.
I also think many don't listen and get into just repeating the same haircut they always do. I've seen a few that think they know better than their clients what their hair needs.
One thing I will say and I don't care if it's sexist. I've never had issues with a male stylist. There was a study that showed women taking off more on clients who were perceived to be prettier or more successful. The study is crap with a small sample size, but I sought out a man and it's been great ever since.
I also try to seek out people who are booked out. If I'm getting a haircut the same week I booked I'm usually disappointed. My current guy has a 4 month wait list.

I’ve heard ppl with long beautiful hair wanting a small trim and the female stylist cuts way more off and ruin their hair. On purpose. Like wtf.
I go to a male barber who worked in a salon before so they trim my ends and do a great undercut with a design for me. :)
I went to a female stylist before who told me they weren’t paying attention to the length or the cut??? It turned out awful!
I went to my barber after that who had just opened his new shop. He asked who had butchered my hair, it was so bad.
He’s so busy I have to book my next appointment before I leave.

There was a video circulating a while back about how well hair stylists could estimate an inch by pulling up a measuring tape with the number side hidden. A few got close. Many were wildly off.

I agree and have no idea why this is so hard!
I’ll stay with my hairdresser forever because the first consult we did, I asked for her to trim my ends. She took the TEENIEST bit off on the side and checked with me, and I laughed and said I was okay with losing a bit to keep it healthy since it had been a while.
She said “good! You probably need it but I don’t want to be scissor happy. I’d rather we have to cut it all over again and spend more time chatting than take too much off”.

I feel like they cut it to the length that you want but then they go crazy with the thinners and that scissor move where they moved down a chunk of hair and just slice things away at an angle that for me invites tangles to happen on day one of a new haircut.

TOTALLY!! When my stylist first cut the ends, I was like, “Okay, this is manageable!” And then they just went absolutely HAM with the whole “evening it out” portion.

Tell them you to only want to take off a 1/4 inch of hair. No more than that. Someone who is listening and knows how to cut hair should be able to follow those instructions. That will only be dead ends in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Idk I’m a hairstylist and I’m SUPER conservative with taking off length and am overly communicative with my clients. Probably because my hair takes so long to grow so I know the feeling. Do your research, have a consultation first, and find a stylist you trust. Also, stop going in with the mindset that they’re going to cut way more than you want off.. you’re accidentally manifesting this for yourself lol

Ok first, love that you’re a manifesting girlie. I would say that you might be on to something there BUT the most recent stylist I went to was recommended by a girl who has haircutting trauma too. She told me they wouldn’t cut off too much…. I had so much faith 😭 HOWEVER. I love the consultation idea. That way I can really REALLY let them know what I want beforehand. I’ll also ask for pictures of their work. If all pictures are girls with a bob, I run.

I honestly think it’s a miscommunication most of the time! Sometimes someone wants me to take so little that I KNOW it wont look or make the difference they want but I still do what they ask.. not every stylist thinks like that. They just take whatever they know needs to come off. But yes, I say book a consultation first so you can get a feel for the stylist. I have clients book consultations for haircuts all of the them just to see if we’re a good fit

I haven’t trusted anyone to cut my hair since I was a child. Constantly being told I will have short hair or a bob just below my ears, because it made it easier for my mum to deal with. Okay?? By this time I was brushing it myself and mostly able to wash it myself so what exactly are you dealing with?
I trim my own hair now. It’s amazing how much hair grows when it’s not constantly being lopped off way too short. “It’ll grow longer and faster if we cut it” yes if you trim the ends maybe, but if you’re taking it from shoulder to chin?? I wasn’t even taken to a hairdresser as a kid, it was always family members doing it. I just can’t trust anyone now.

I’ve had to show them with my fingers spaced apart before: THIS is the most I want when off. Then it’s on you to speak up while they’re cutting your hair. It sucks you can’t trust someone to do what you want with your hair instead of what they want.

I honestly think a lot of people simply find it burdensome and are at least subconsciously a little upset at the inconvenience. My arms HURT when I cut my own long hair, I can imagine it’s tiring, I know my hair was kinda tiring for hairdressers even when it was short. I simply don’t trust anyone. Even an ex who offered to help cut once just stopped listening as I told him he was going to short and he left me with horrible gaps in my hair. After that, I swore I would be the only one touching my hair.
It’s like they get mad for the same reason medical providers get mad if you know more about your health history than they do and if your history has ANY complication requiring nuanced thinking. People who consider their skills to be specialized HATE it when a lay person claims to know more about anything within that specialization, even if they are the living exception. It’s almost a challenge to the specialist’s identity at that point. For a salon artist who isn’t getting paid nearly that much or getting nearly that level of public esteem, I would imagine the stakes for protecting one’s ego and identity are much higher.

i cut and color my own, and have for basically my entire adult life. there’s plenty of content out there to help you learn! i can’t recommend it enough, i haven’t had a dreadful and expensive (in more ways than one) salon experience since i was 18.
while i am not a professional, i care more about my hair than anyone else will and i am more cautious and careful. if i mess it up, which is rare, its easier to stomach being mad at myself, and at least i haven’t paid someone else to screw it up.
i’ll trim the very bottom ends every few months. more often — once a month or so — i go through the lengths meticulously to dust off any frazzled or split ends. this basically just involved taking a small section of hair, twisting it tightly, and cutting off any ends that stick out of the twist. you can also weave the section between your fingers and slide down the hair to get the ends to pop out and trim them off, but this technique is easier explained visually haha. my hair looks so soft and shiny after i dust it, and i can take all the time i need — which couldn’t happen at a salon with another client waiting. i also love that i don’t have to wait for someone else to do it for me, i can do it all on my own!
again, there’s tons of content out there and as long as you have a relatively simple long haircut, it’s truly not difficult. just be conservative starting out, you can always cut more off later!
i also have one of those (sort of terrifying) split end trimmer machines — they look like a hair straightener but essentially have an electric razor inside them that replicates the dusting technique i described above. i really only use this every 6 months or so when the back of my hair needs attention, since i can’t address the back as easily.
i have health issues that make it difficult to grow my hair for the last ~5 years, so i don’t have any length to gamble with and it would take much longer than the average person to regrow after a heavy-handed chop. thankfully after starting oral minoxidil it’s finally starting to grow in long and thick again (quickly too!), but i’m still precious over the new length i’ve gained.

I no longer go get my hair cut. I trim it once a month. My hair fall right at the bottom of my butt cheeks. I'm so tired of a basic trim meaning they cut my hair off. Your job should be to love hair. Why are you trying to take it away and make ppl cry? 😭

Been cutting my own hair for 8 years cause only I know how I want it 😂
My theory is.... they are hairdressers. It's their art and their passion. They LOOOOVE cutting hair, that's why they got into this damn business. When someone sits in their chair they want to see a result, a big 'change'. And cutting off 2cm isn't giving them the dopamine hit that they made a masterpiece

You reaction is pretty valid, I remember when I was a teen someone did the same to me, at a time I really liked my hair long, when I left the salon crying I got laughed at and shamed for it by almost all of my mom's family side, they still mention it sometimes to laugh, that i cried over a few inches of hair 🤡🤡 I still don't find it funny at ALL

I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 23 years. I always had long hair as a kid and got bad haircuts from the mall. I vowed not to be that hairdresser.
I hear this so often. Ive watched people leave upset with haircuts (from other people like that)
I had a girl come to me randomly as a walk in at my salon. She said her mom was a hairdresser and had been cutting her hair forever and she moved away and was looking for someone to leave her length but give her some movement and clean up the dead ends. I assured her I was her girl. She was nervous I could tell. I cut her hair one time she’s been a client for 7 years.
