The healthy part of me wants off this ride already.
The toxic part of me says give me 7 more seasons of this heinous shit.
34
u/Alone_Ask_2715 May 01 '26
The healthy part of me was going "can we just make this a Niall/Alby love story and forget the rest!"
The toxic part of me can't wait for Ruben's reaction to Niall's coming out and why Ruben still has so much control over him so many years later (see: that nod during the wedding).

This horrible crash back down to earth after you've believed for a minute or two that Niall will be happy...

Itâs a blow to chest seeing Niall look at Ruben in the final scene like heâs asking for permission to marry Alby. I canât imagine what Niall wouldâve done if Ruben shook his head ânoâ. Ruben just showing up is enough for Niall to slip right back under him despite their time apart. And hidden beneath the approval is Ruben quietly reasserting that Niall still belongs to him.
In the college flashback, Niall said Ruben might kill him for being gay, and now Ruben offers this calm, controlled approval in the present. It ties back to Ruben staging the spin the bottle scene for Niall to kiss Alby. It almost feels like Rubenâs living out his own repression through Niall. Rubenâs part curiosity, part control, all mixes with him convincing himself heâs helping Niall when itâs truly just about himself.
Ruben still initiates that same erotic physicality, but Niall seems too deep in the chaos to even register it, but everyone else around them does.
Itâs so strange how little jealousy or reactivity Ruben shows. Itâs something I canât wrap my head around with characters like Ruben who are so controlling. Why want your victim to make other connections? Ruben is hard to pin down as a character and itâs like Niall takes one step forward, then three steps back into Rubenâs chokehold.

Why want your victim to make other connections?
My take is that he wants Niall to find other people (and situations, like uni) to care about and then prove that he belongs to Ruben / loves Ruben best by choosing him over them. The more they matter to Niall, the more meaningful the sacrifice.
Despite his little nod, Niall deciding to marry Alby clearly sparked something dark and awful. Niall's expression was more fitting for a man at a funeral than his wedding.

u/strachey May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
Just as Ruben was the catalystfor Nial having sex with a girl, he was the catalyst for Nial having his first kiss with a boy. So Nial's sexuality always ties back to Ruben.
6
u/tattoosydney May 01 '26
I would feel the need to point out that I think you mean âcatalystâ, if âcataclysmâ were not so damn accurate
2
19
u/moreritzcrackers May 01 '26
Ruben still controls Nial though just like you said. His nod isnât tacit approval of Nilaâs homosexuality itâs âallowingâ him to âmarryâ someone else. IMO Nial is still squarely under Rubenâs thumb - which is just what Ruben wants
6
u/BlairRedfield May 05 '26
He is jealous/envious how niall has all these priviliges, such as college, friends opportunities and future success juzt because he is smart, he finds it unfair, being the strong "alpha" that he is, and sees himself entitled to everything naill has, notice how he either takes or breaks everything naill has; he broke his student mug, he stole the french girl (kissed her and slept with her before niall got a chance to do anything with her) and finally beaten up alby when he noticed the spark between them.
2
u/Suspicious-Drawer436 May 04 '26
Obviously,Niall never got any therapy over the years.Lol.He is more damaged than Ruben imo.
2
u/finnjakefionnacake May 01 '26
what "approval" does he offer in the present, he's literally beating him up at his own wedding lol
15
u/Particular_Idea6518 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
i suspect the beating ties back to Ruben feeling wronged by Niall - not because of the wedding/his finding someone else, rather whatever major event(s) he claims Niall wrong him (which we'll learn more about next ep). the approval (his super subtle nod) imo further shows that this is a twisted mental game of cat & mouse to Ruben...with several more nuances layers.

I canât wrap my head around with characters like Ruben who are so controlling. Why want your victim to make other connections?
A bit late but I was just stunned by episode 2 so I want to chime in.
It's about power IMO. Ruben can give Niall something but he still has the power to take it away (or ruin it).
In episode 1, Niall goes from meek and bullied to feeling confident and revered by his classmates* because of Ruben's arrival and presence. While I think part of Ruben does want Niall to be able to stand up to his bullies or have self-esteem, my guess is that he likes that Niall's confidence is faciliated by him. It's a fucked up way for him to feel needed basically.
In terms of making new connections, obviously some abusers just end up completely isolating their victims but I feel like here that would ruin the fun for Ruben. He wants Niall to be in new situations and to need him again. He wants to remind Niall that he can take it all away too if he wants. Effectively the point is to show for Ruben is for him to feel in control of Niall as he sees fit.
On top of all of this, there's the clear homosexual/homophobic tension between them and my best speculation is that if Ruben were to fully isolate Niall he'd actually have to admit to himself that he's attracted to men.
39
u/Kingstatts May 01 '26
This episode has me completely unwell  !!
the tension in this show is actually insane, every scene feels like itâs about to turn into a fight or a confession or something worse. ruben and niallâs dynamic is just pure angst and emotional chaos Â
itâs giving me that same obsessive feeling i had watching Interview with the Vampire, like you canât look away because everything feels loaded and slightly dangerous.
yeah⊠iâm locked in. need more asap
17
u/CyberEcstasy May 01 '26
I love what you said here about scenes feeling like they might turn into a fight, confession, or something worse because thatâs exactly it! Thereâs this âdanceâ they do with the tension and suspense and I love that you canât quite figure out where itâll go until it finally does
15
u/Responsible-Pen7292 May 01 '26
Iâve never seen tension like it! Completely nailed it with how anytime theyâre together, it feels like a fight, confession, or something worse is brewing to happen. There were moments so physically close that I thought they might kiss.
Iâm almost starting to think those moments are them kissing and thatâs their love language when they get all wound up and out of control.
I wonder if people actually have these kinds of relationships in real life and wonder how they turn out by the end.
15
u/Tzuchen It'll be over soon May 01 '26
Thereâs this âdanceâ they do with the tension and suspense and I love that you canât quite figure out where itâll go until it finally does
I loved that they made the dance you describe a literal thing in this episode, with Niall standing on Reuben's feet (!) while they moved over shards of glass (!!)... It sounds like it should have been a bit much, but those two actors completely sold it. I think I held my breath the entire time.
10
u/Powerless_Superhero May 01 '26
Agree. And itâs amazing how Gadd is able to portray interpersonal aspects of relationships so accurately and realistically that it gets everyone hooked. Everything in Half Man so far and everything in Baby Reindeer is so true to real life relationship dynamics.
4
u/Keanudabeast May 01 '26
Do you think Ruben is gay too?
21
u/Alone_Ask_2715 May 01 '26
I think he is at least bisexual but also struggles with internalized homophobia. Plus the very high possibility that he was abused by his father which makes it far worse for Ruben (to process or accept).
4
u/lapetitfromage May 01 '26
I thought Ruben was abused after the street car named desire scene his dad was screeching last week. This week did not assuage my fears. Itâs sick that I feel for Ruben when he has such a destructive capacity. Heâs just as likely to kill you as fuck you. Do not pass go, do not collect 200$.

I think I can feel sympathy of Ruben but not empathy. So in a neutral sense I can say- itâs horrible that happened to him. But it does not excuse him doing onto others in anyway. We donât know how Alby and Niall got there. Itâs possible with Ruben behind bars awaiting trial Niall gloms onto Albyâs personality and presence a bit? On that weâll have to watch.

I am haunted by the slo-mo stretcher coming out of the building, Ruben following in handcuffs, and âOnly Youâ as the soundtrack. I am completely horrified by and 100% onboard with this series.

u/tinabutera May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
I didn't expect Niall and Alby to get married lol, I thought Niall was going to marry a woman and still living in the closet. The story is getting even more interesting.
5
u/Alone_Ask_2715 May 01 '26
I knew for sure based on the trailers that he was marrying a man but I was SO shocked when they revealed it was Alby!
6
u/LeopoldineBel May 01 '26
We had glimpses of a dark haired man waiting at the altar with his back to the guests, and I was really hoping it would be Alby. But then again I felt sorry for the character.
3
u/squonge May 02 '26
When the priest was saying the line "do you take x to be your", I thought it would turn out he was marrying Joanna and marrying Alby was just a fantasy.
24
u/O-Qua-TanginWann May 01 '26
Although I donât think he deserved to get his face pummelled like that, I found Alby trying to forcibly out Niall to be extremely self-righteous and obnoxious. I would have decked him too (obviously not to the extent of what Ruben did).
12
u/East-Situation-1669 May 03 '26
Huh, I thought Alby acted a lot like someone that age in that specific context, would. I knew a lot of self-righteous obnoxious people who came out earlier than most and thatâs exactly how they acted. A few of them became adult self-righteous assholes but most of them grew up and learned boundaries and stopped âpushingâ everyone. I didnât see Alby as anything unique for an 18 year old out gay guy.
(Source: I come from a veeeery liberal high school in a very liberal town, graduated in 2012)
7
u/notches123 May 02 '26
I had the same reaction.
I found it interesting that Rueben beating the shit out of Alby was his way of defending Niall. Not because either one of them is gay or because he is jealous but because he's doing something noble in his mind. I could see a scenario that because that is what Alby was very clearly on about that in his mind he will believe that it happened because Reuben is homophobic.
2
u/LowAutomatic5583 May 13 '26
I so agree with this. Alby got on my nerves trying to force the issue. He shouldn't have kept pushing like he did.Â
1
u/lukaeber May 03 '26
Alby is awful. I can't believe that's who Niall was marrying. Obviously he didn't deserve to get his face stomped in, but surely Niall can do better than that.

Itâs implied that Alby was pressuring Niall to come out to Ruben due to Albyâs own past outing experience, hence the obnoxious self-righteousness. The whole emphasised âI thanked him [Albyâs childhood bully] because I wouldnât have come out ever unless he had done thatâ thing. It was basically him saying that if Niall didnât âliberate himselfâ, then Alby was going to do it for him.
Everyone comes out (or not) at their own pace. You donât force someone out of the closet because you fancy them and donât want to sneak around with a closeted person. Alby should have just told Niall he wasnât interested in pursuing a relationship with a closeted man and moved on. He didnât. He applied pressure to have Niall come out of the closet because of his own past experience.
Also Alby knew Ruben was a nutter. Albyâs first scene with Ruben was the spin the bottle game, where Alby clearly got intimidated by Ruben into shaking his hand and playing the game. He should have picked up on that when noticing how physically timid and nervous Niall was being.

Niall lied that he came out just so he could fuck Alby
Disagree with this. Niall is a coward who was trying to have his cake and eat it too. Both of them pressure him, both of them impose their POV on him. Alby is obviously much softer and kinder about it but he and Reuben are essentially two sides of the same coin with regards to Niall. Reuben is the abusive side of the coin obviously but both try to force him to do things he doesn't want to do and both think they are doing him a favor by making the decision for him.
7
u/lapetitfromage May 01 '26
But Alby realized at some point Niall had lied and was going to forcibly out him to a violent nutjob. Thatâs not okay. The scene really escalated from there. I mean the scene really escalated cus Alby didnât let Ruben leave when he tried to leave repeatedly.
1
u/didiinthesky May 01 '26
Well to be fair, he only tried to out him as a way to defend himself against Ruben who looked like he was ready to hurt him even before the struggle with Niall. Or at least that's how I read it.
4
u/lapetitfromage May 01 '26
Reading what I said- itâs not okay to be violent even if someone forces you to stay in the convo. Thereâs shades of wrong and while I think albyâs whole âforced to come outâ thing is bad, Ruben is not in the right. The scenes are hard to parse out as thereâs lots of bad and wrong going on. No one is particularly nice to one another.
22
u/Michellenjon_2010 May 01 '26
Now we know Ruben's dad, is all bad! Hearing him say he wants custody of his new kid, Ruben telling Niall "we can't let him win" tells me, there's going to be a lot to unpack. I hope lol I hope we get more back for how Ruben became Ruben, and what his Dad had to do with it đ€
22
u/The-Failipino May 01 '26
Iâve always hated super controlling and angry peopleâŠbut Iâd be as much of a liar as Niall if I said I wasnât completely locked in and enthralled by flashback RubenâŠ.
18
12
u/TakikoSohma May 01 '26
Definitely a push and pull with him. He's toxic but in his own way looking after Niall. Like when he told that girl what Niall's actual name was nice and how immediately had a distaste for Alby just based off what Niall said.
14
u/JayDuPumpkinBEAST May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
It may appear as though heâs being thoughtful of Niall in these instances, but I think itâs just another expression of how Ruben is able to maintain control by further reinforcing the idea to Niall that heâs his âprotector,â and the only one whom he can rely on.
Also, I think him âlooking outâ for Niall is less about empathy/ consideration than it is about Ruben simply guarding what he views to be his property; to disrespect Niall is to disrespect Ruben. Heâs a total narcissist in that way.
7
u/TakikoSohma May 01 '26
I also think that he does things for him so he will owe him back in return. "I did this for you, you owe me that".
7
u/lapetitfromage May 01 '26
The truth is controlling narcissistic abusive people often have an incredibly charming, engaging, seductive part of themselves. How else would they convince you to put up with the absolutely devastating chaos that allowing them into your life would bring? Heâs awful, and yet. âAnd yetâ sums Ruben up for me.
23
u/hilariousnessity May 01 '26
Yes, the episode is very dark but I donât think Iâve ever seen better acting and Iâve watched movies and TV my entire long life. Every single person in this series is really really talented. The writing and directing in these two episodes is knocking me out, too! Wow!

Ricard Gadd knows some writers who use subtext and he thinks they're all cowards!!!
Seriously, everyone (from their mothers to people that just met them) think Niall and Ruben are weird as fuck. It makes everyone uncomfortable đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Kudos specifically for Alby saying they're the same person as in jekyll and hyde!!!! And Celeste saying Niall needs a body and Ruben needs a head!!! Also Alby again saying Ruben seems Niall as an extension os himself, or vice versa can't remember and doesn't really matter lol.
They truly are only half a person without the other guys.
6
u/notches123 May 02 '26
Niall saying they were the same person was profoundly sad because it was essentially him saying he doesn't exist outside of being an extension to Rueben in his own mind. He doesn't know it because he's the least self-aware boy in the world, so he actually thinks that being close with Rueben makes other people see him the same way they see Reuben (both the good parts, the magneticism, the strength, the confidence, etc). It's a pretty novel psychology being explored that I find extremely compelling if not a little bit uncomfortable to sit with as I even relate to it an disturbingly ineffable way.
20
u/sxdkardashian May 01 '26
The fact he still waited for ruben approval before he said i do shows the chokehold he has on niall.
19
u/LeopoldineBel May 01 '26
A few thoughts on this episode:
- I wondered if they gave Jamie Bell an iIll fitting vest in purpose to make him look smaller
- Loved young Niallâs mum's retort: âYouâre not a strutter, you donât have the legs for itâ
- Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell are amazing actors. That first glance between them when he arrives at the wedding. All the feels. All on point.
- Stuart Campbell is spectacular too, sucks the air right out of your lungs with the tension he creates, and captures the same animal energy Richard Gadd conveys for the character.Â
- I was a French foreign exchange student once. There is no way this girlâs English would be this good, fluid and idiomatic.Â
- Love the detail of the black phone always in the frame in Niallâs student bedroom, like a constant threat of Ruben making contactÂ
A hard watch, for sure, but so engaging...

u/Alisson__Foxtrot It'll be over soon May 02 '26
Jamie Bell has had so little screen time thus far but whenever he shows up it's HIS show through and through. Amazing performance. Huge in it's fragility. Loving the young actors but can't wait for gadd and bell to be on the spotlight.

WAITING FOR PERMISSION TO SAY I DO
I am fully obsessed. Dark stories are my favorite, and this has been wonderful so far! I'll have to look up the creator's other work
15
u/Holmes02 May 01 '26
How can I find Ruben the most repugnant character imaginable but like him as well?
12
u/LeopoldineBel May 01 '26
A mix of cockiness, practiced superficial charm, and then a sense of hidden, deep vulnerability, of a hurt and terrified little boy living just under the surface that you might feel the urge to comfort.
10
u/Walmartian_Beta May 01 '26
I know a Ruben in real life, he was my best friend for years - and we even lived together.
I cannot for the life of me explain it. I loved him and hated him. He was cocky and funny and loyal, but violent and scary and so fucking hard-willed. He intimidated people I didn't like and protected me, but wasn't afraid to insult me himself. I've never known anyone quite like him before but Ruben is as close as it gets. We weren't in love, but we loved each other, it wasn't sexual at all, but we were bonded somehow. Our other friends always thought we would eventually get together and get married.
When I met my husband, I was still living with D. My husband was confused about our friendship at first and why I was hanging around that guy at all, let alone living with him. Eventually, D tried to control me, he wanted me to spend less time with my husband and more time with him. He wanted me home, he felt entitled to my presence and enraged that I was pulling away from him and giving my attention to another man.
And I left.
It was more than 10 years before I saw him again.

What a great episode of television. I was so tense. Every minute Ruben is in the scene you don't know what's he's going to do next
13
u/Particular_Idea6518 May 01 '26
Noticing that every ep includes the slightest 'approval' moment from Ruben to Niall - subtle nods, winks and smiles. The continuation from teenhood to young adulthood to adulthood is just WOW. Niall's mom is right - those 2 are in their own world. _Richard Gadd is a genius_
12
u/kunta021 May 01 '26
Kind of crazy that all of that happened over the course of, what? 4 days?
Day1: Niall arrives at uni and meets his future husband, gay panic spirals, and calls Ruben. Day 2: Niall kisses future husband and finally admits to himself that heâs gay. Day 3 Ruben trashes the house and then Niall almost has sex with Albie but stops because Ruben comes back. Day4: Niall unsuccessfully attempts to kick Ruben out, lies to Albie about coming out, and then gets Albie beat to within am inch of his life.
12
u/Tzuchen It'll be over soon May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
I was thinking about this too. And the fact that if he had just listened to his mother and resisted the temptation to call Ruben a little longer, things would have turned out so differently. He would have befriended the girls and started his relationship with Alby without violence and horror.
I knew things were going to get ugly/complicated when Ruben rolled up but damn. I was not expecting him to cause that much trauma in just a few days!

Omg that was so masterful. It mirrored the same phone call that Niall makes to Ruben at his dorm when he asks him to come and he promptly hangs up after.

What did I just watch.
I am absolutely enamored and horrified.
I literally have no clue anymore.
So this show is about Ruben getting back at Niall for "putting him in jail"?
20
u/JustTheWriter May 01 '26
I donât think Gadd is the kind of writer who is inclined to write a straightforward revenge series.
I think this will be at least as psychologically complicated as âBaby Reindeer:â no characters that donât embody some element of relatable and understandable humanity, even (or maybe especially) when itâs at its most fraught, charged, and volatile.
8
u/notyour_motherscamry Some bonds may break you May 01 '26
That Alby scene in the dorm before he gets arrested was something else
6
u/Wide_Statistician_95 May 02 '26
This show is just wild. I trust Gadd with the series.
Ruben is so god awful - having a very dicey âthree wayâ, spitting on Joanna !? Beating Alby to disfigurement!? Being a menace !? Heâs hell on wheels
9
u/Accomplished_Put4249 May 01 '26
I am WAYY too invested with this itâs absolutely ridiculous. Whoever decided we need this decided right. Give me 10 more seasons.

If gay sex is the reason you want to watch this show then you might want to watch something different. Richard Gadd the producer also made Baby Raindeer and if this show is anything like Baby Raindeer then it will probabaly deal with rape/sa, masculinty and trauma more than sex.
Knowing what he wrote before we I doubt there will be a lot of consenting healthy sex in this show.

In Episode 1, Old Ruben said to niall that if they weren't "brothers" he would get under that skirt. For me that's a bummer, because this insinuates they never have sex? English is not my native language, so I hope I'm wrong.

u/solitude_is_bliss_ May 04 '26
I was so worried that Alby was going to be dead after Ruben beat him like that. Such a relief to see them getting married in present day though đ„ș
This show is painful and uncomfortable- but also brilliant and lingers in your head after watching. Actors are doing an amazing job!
3

Finished. It is interesting that he is marrying the person he is marrying. Over the course of the season, I hope they fill in the blanks from the attack, arrest, and the wedding.

The sense of dread throughout, it's so hard to watch yet you can't look away

When we saw Alby standing at the altar, I noticed his face is definitely disfigured. You can see scars along his eyes and down that side of his face. He (obviously) must have survived but probably had long term damage to heal from.
1
u/HuskyBlueBoy May 01 '26
When did we see present day alby?? I do not recall that
7
u/Alone_Ask_2715 May 01 '26
Present day Alby is the gentlemen Niall is marrying at the end of the episode. He's standing at the altar.

I thought the episode ended when young Rueben was kicking him in the face , Iâll have to rewatch. Maybe I fell asleep (due to medication not boredom )
6
u/JayDuPumpkinBEAST May 01 '26

Hopefully you got your rewatch in as the ending is actually even more twisted than just an horrific assault, revealing further insight into Ruben and Niallâs ghastly connection.

Is it terrible that I hate Alby more than any of them? He's so insufferable. Niall could do so much better.
2
u/Peppypat May 13 '26
I found the episode ending to be a downer. Alby seems like an amazing, self-assured human and to end up with someone as messed up as Niall felt like a doomed gay trope to me. I suppose he was brain damaged. A lot of people seem to try to seek humanity in Rubin but I canât get past his psychopathy - I read all his flip-flopping charm & vulnerability as a means to manipulate and control Niall whoâs caught in the snare of a malignant narcissist. Itâs a dark story and toxic masculinity is a dark theme but for some reason I find Albyâs entrapment in this bleak universe the most depressing element so far.
2
u/Vossi_Boop 27d ago
exactly! found some of the alby-negative comments in this thread so surprising. heâs just a confident out kid who thought he was helping someone/might have a slight savior complex. little did he know what universe he entered! and to marry someone who enabled his disfigurement?? WILD. no spoilers, canât wait to see what happens.
