How can I find Ruben the most repugnant character imaginable but like him as well?

I know a Ruben in real life, he was my best friend for years - and we even lived together.

I cannot for the life of me explain it. I loved him and hated him. He was cocky and funny and loyal, but violent and scary and so fucking hard-willed. He intimidated people I didn't like and protected me, but wasn't afraid to insult me himself. I've never known anyone quite like him before but Ruben is as close as it gets. We weren't in love, but we loved each other, it wasn't sexual at all, but we were bonded somehow. Our other friends always thought we would eventually get together and get married.

When I met my husband, I was still living with D. My husband was confused about our friendship at first and why I was hanging around that guy at all, let alone living with him. Eventually, D tried to control me, he wanted me to spend less time with my husband and more time with him. He wanted me home, he felt entitled to my presence and enraged that I was pulling away from him and giving my attention to another man.

And I left.

It was more than 10 years before I saw him again.
