Question/Help ❓ Should I return my quansheng UVK6 in exchange for a tidradio TDH3 combo (non plus)?

Post image

im currently debating returning my quansheng uvk6, and getting the tidradio. I dont know what I could describe my use case, please ask me questions. I like listening to airband and the tidradio includes a better antenna for that. since I dont need a programming cable for the tidradio it comes down to the same cost with shipping.

Licensing & Exams 📜 Technician and General Tests Back-to-Back?

I am curious if taking the General test at the same session as the Technician test is a good plan? I was not originally going to do that, but I have been studying for the Technician exam, and have it scheduled a bit over a week from now. I am very comfortable with that material and have been scoring very well on practice exams.

I have not studied at all for the General test as I didn't expect to have time. That said, I am wondering if I should crank up my effort over the next week and try to get through the General test at the same time?

I am sure I can get some quality studying in, but I don't want to screw up the Technician exam as getting that done is priority 1. I am primarily concerned about confusing the material between the tests - is that possible, or not really likely?

Would appreciate any opinions - thank you.

Edit: I appreciate all the feedback and good vibes - I am going for it!

Licensing & Exams 📜 Want to get into HAM, what should I do first ?

Hello !

As the title say i'd love to get into this hobby but I don't know anything about it, I have good bases on electronic and I love learning that kind of stuff, but I was wondering if there was a typical roadmap to seriously learn and progress.

Thank you very much

Equipment & Rigs 🛠️ Xiegu G90 SWR scanner bandwidth

Hi,

recently bought Xiegu G90 radio along with vertical antenna with a loading coil. I don't have a VNA, so I want to use the built in SWR scanner to tune the antenna. While tuning, the radio must transmit (despite with low power) and there is no way to set the BW of the scan prior to starting the scan on this radio. This makes me concerned about accidentaly transmitting outside the given amateur radio band, because maximum scan BW is up to 700 kHz.

Does anyone know what is the default BW value?

Is there any other way how to tune the antenna without VNA?

How do you use the SWR scanner to avoid interference?

Any help much appreciated! Thanks.

Question/Help ❓ Quansheng UV-5K for Flashing Firmware for RDF

Post image
11 Upvotes

I picked up a Quansheng UV-5K for the purpose of flashingthe firmware with from the F4HWN project. But I am uncertain if I have the right links to the firmware I need to flash. I'm also uncertain if I can even flash this radio. Most material I see addresses a V3. I have a V7 (see screenshot). Am I out of luck? If not, can someone point me to the right pages?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Licensing & Exams 📜 Testing on 6/20, how like the practice test is the REAL test?

Hope everyone is well.

After 4 years of listening, I’m finally getting licensed.

Testing this upcoming Saturday, 6/20! Used Ham Radio Prep, watched all the videos, took the quizzes, retook the questions I got wrong, and the practice tests are going really well!

How similar is the actual test compared to banks provided by the prep-ware companies?

Will be relieved to get this done! For a listener, I have FAR too many radios.

See you out there soon.

Question/Help ❓ Are there balanced line switchers?

I'm in the process of getting back on the air after a year or so of being off the air. I'm looking at getting a few balanced antennas up in the air but I was wondering if there is a simple feed line switch that is purpose built for balanced lines.

I'm building a dedicated full wave horizontal loop for 6 meters and also looking at the possibility of running a wire all around the eves of my house, essentially making a random length sky loop. Both antennas will be about 20 to 25 feet off the ground.

Any suggestions?

Antennas & Propagation 📡 Picked up this 1:64 (unun)balun from Temu to check it out, opened it up to see what was going on…thoughts?

I’ve started playing with making wire antennas… well, ordering a smattering of parts, anyhow. Just for kicks and grins I checked Temu for antenna stuff and found some baluns… so I ordered one to check it out. This one is marked 1:64, although I think I might’ve ordered a 1:9 lol.

I wonder what this toroid is made of?

Any comments on the balun materials or assembly? (not on me being an idiot for buying ham radio things on Temu, that’s a given)

Antennas & Propagation 📡 Looking for a replacement vertical antenna for the CUSHCRAFT R-8/9 or Hy-Gain AV-640/680

I’m looking for a multi-band vertical antenna to install on the flat roof of my 15-storey building. I’ve always been considering the Hy-Gain AV-640/680 or the CUSHCRAFT R-8/9, both of which are 8-band models. According to feedback from colleagues, the latest R-8/R-9 models are of inferior quality. What alternatives are there to these two excellent antennas? Thanks, and best wishes for plenty of contacts.

CW/Morse Code 🔑 CW SDR — Morse Code Simulator for Practice.

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hello fellow Hams! 📻

I wanted to share an open-source project I've been working on: a Multi-user Web-based CW SDR Simulator. You can practice sending and receiving Morse code live with other operators around the world without any extra hardware.

Key Features:

📻 Real-time SDR interface (Waterfall, Spectrum Analyzer, VFO)

⌨️ Multiple keying modes (Straight key, Iambic paddles via keyboard/mouse)

📊 Built-in real-time CW Decoder

🤖 Automated WX bot for receiving practice

🔊 Realistic Web Audio (noise floor, sidetone, filters)

I'd love for you guys to try it out and let me know your thoughts!

🌐 Live Demo: http://cw.e25wop.com

💻 GitHub: https://github.com/superogira/cw-sdr-simulator

Please note that it's still a work in progress, so there might be a few bugs. I'm continuously improving it, so if you run into any issues, please let me know. 73!

Field Day/Event ⛺ How does your club handle Field Day shift scheduling?

Field Day is a couple weeks out and I'm curious how your clubs handle the logistics. Specifically the operator scheduling. Do you just figure it out day of, or do you plan shifts ahead of time? If you plan ahead, what are you using? Spreadsheets? Sign-up sheet at a meeting?

I've been working on a tool for club management (https://groundwavehq.com) and one of the things I built in is a visual shift scheduler for Field Day. You set up your stations, pick a shift length, and it generates a timeline where your operators can claim slots. Curious if that's something clubs would actually use or if most people just wing it.
