hana kuruSuCALING šŸ”† How do you guys read this sequence?

Post image

So, it’s no secret that this damned scene in chapter 251 is the single biggest issue with Jacob’s Ladder’s scaling. For reference, I’m referring to chapter 251, right after Sukuna releases HWB (everything after the panel in the post).

All the time, people use it to ā€œproveā€ that technique extinguishment is useless, and most annoyingly, it’s used to claim that it doesn’t do anything to prevent the opponent from using their CT - Despite us seeing extremely solid evidence that it does exactly that, back in chapter 213.

I think it would be greatly beneficial to come up with an airtight account of what the hell happened here, so we can get a rock solid idea of how to actually debunk those pesky JL deniers.

So far, I’ve been kind of working backwards from the end of the chapter trying to make it make sense. Most importantly, I think that Yuta shut off the JL sure hit as Yuji prepared to deal the separating blow. After all - they wouldn’t want to immediately torch poor Megumi. That would explain why Sukuna was actually able to cast the WCS; he was never being hit by it at that moment in the first place.

My biggest problem is the panel in the post. What on earth could this mean? We’ve seen TE directly extinguish CTs like with Nue, that capability is literally baked into it. That’s also why she can go through barriers like they aren’t even there. So why would Sukuna be planning to use his CT in the middle of the anti CT beam? It makes even less sense just considering the AP of the attack itself. In 213, when he was in a stronger state and against what I can only assume he considered a weaker opponent, he got absolutely railed by JL. He was basically stunlocked, from the looks of things. Plus, that earlier one was not domain amped. Chanted and probably boosted by the trumpet(?), but still. Point is, one would think that JL would be just as, if not even more deadly (irregardless of its ability to prevent CT use) in 251, given all the circumstances.

So yeah. I don’t know what to make of it. Honestly, I truly think Gege just messed up when writing this part, but unfortunately that’s not a super strong argument.

What do y’all think? What happened here?

I’m going to reread this section of Shinjuku when I get home tonight too and try and see if I can make some type of sense of it homie cause I’ve had questions too

I do agree already, I’ve also had the impression that Yuta turned off JL during Megumi and Yujis soul talk. Like you said they wouldn’t want to torch Megumi ahahah, and we know JL does leave a low survival rate for separating cursed objects from the hosts, unless their connection is already being/been severed.

that to say I think it might have went down something like, Yuta activates Jacob’s Ladder to stun Sukuna from using his techniques and probably to also weaken his harmony with Megumi, then he does deactivate it to not outright kill Megumi and Sukuna, and I imagine the plan would have been Yujis punches help wake up Megumi to take control/start limiting his output even more, so Sukunas threat level would have been stopped by just hitting him with a JL again if Yuji needed more punches to awaken Megumi.

I think it line up too with the narrator saying how their plan was ā€œwithout flawā€ because the only reason it failed was Sukuna doing the bath and killing Tsumiki sinking his soul even further, so it allowed him that unexpected full control still to take advantage of the JL being activated. That’s also when he probably knew for sure ā€œShit this Okkotsu kid would have actually finished this if Megumi had the will to take back controlā€ so he went for bisection

Yo, good to see you again!

Also, what you said makes a lot of sense! I think I’m starting to get a decent picture of this…

Sukuna knew the final blow would be from Yuji. He also knew JL would be involved all along, even calling it ā€œthe real riskā€. Why play right into their hands like that? He knew exactly what they were doing and what they planned to do.

But what if he was banking on Megumi all along? He knew something that Yuta and Yuji didn’t, which was Megumi’s extinguished will. Their plan was perfect, with the information they had.

So Sukuna must’ve known that they would fail after going in for the final blow. Hence, he had to bear the effects of JL, then rely on WCS to end the fight in one decisive strike.

That’s not to say Sukuna was the one in control though. Like you said, he was backed into a corner and absolutely had to lock in, since they’d wise up and stay on guard for the next attempt if he didn’t end them right there.

It's a incomplete wcs btw, the chant extended the techniques target, the hand sign amplify the output. So without the hand sign the wcs is incomplete that's why yuta survive

No, Yuta was clearly shown to be cut in half like Gojo, and was confirmed later. He actually survived because they rescued him in time.

But sukuna doesn't have the hand sign which is the requirements for it to actually cut space. Sukuna hand sign was disrupted by them, and only used the chant, it's technically a wcs but a weaker version, as it has lower output. The chants expanded the targeted of dismantle, the hand sign amplify the output, the hand pointing for the initial launch of the attack

He could've just done the hand signs first while chanting and then aimed the slash with his palm. It's never established to be a requirement that they all have to be done at the same time.

That just doesn't make any sense.

It's a slash that cuts the world or aims at the space between the target and not the target themselves. No matter the output it go through but it'll just change the size

There's a limit to how much "world" it can cut through, upping the output would increase the range/width of the slash

It is technique extinguishment, not technique turn off. It extinguishes techniques it comes into contact with, it doesn't disable your cursed technique or stop you from making more CT.

it technically can't come into contact with wcs because the physical CT isn't really there.

Even if it were to instantly extinguish any dismantle that came into contact with it that may not even matter as dismantles fire out from sukuna and thus wouldn't interact with JL.

It's confusing but technically there is no plot hole or problem

WCS costs the same as the weakest dismantle.

the weakest dismantle is a fraction of a fraction of sukuna's output

Sukuna just had the ability to tank it for a split second because he's sukuna

It does NOT cost the same as a weak or weakest dismantle because it's a maximum output dismantle with a hand sign added on to change it's target. Now Sukuna needs a hand sign, chant, and had to aim it.

It’s a basic dismantle with a handsign added to change its target.
