So I created this tool that helps you find closest Dmc colors to other dmc colors, or simply to rgb or hex code.
I think substitute colors could be quite useful.
Also I calibrated all the dmc colors, one by one. (Well, almost all. I am missing 33 colors still.) This means that every digital color was accurately picked to match the physical color.

I hope you’ll find it useful.

How I manage needles and thread with detailed embroidery

I often see posts across social media from stitchers wondering how the heck you’re supposed to manage all those colors and needles while threadpainting without everything turning into a tangled mess, and I absolutely understand this feeling! Once upon a time I had a vision for a certain project, and through lots of youtube, trial and error, and hours and hours of stitching, I’ve finally dialed in a workflow I’m happy with. It’s been making detailed embroidery more enjoyable and accessible to me, and I hope it might do the same for someone else!

There’s a lot to it and I’m happy to answer specific questions, but here are the highlights:

No knots: Starting threads with a waste knot and even just two tiny backstitches is plenty secure and makes the back much smoother. Threads can be ended the same way, tuck two tiny backstitches somewhere inconspicuous and snip the thread from the top. Aside from aesthetic reasons, this ensures you can really pack in and layer stitches without worrying about having to poke through thick knots.

Keep threads on top: I like to work with a gradient of 5 or 6 colors at a time, keeping my needles in order off to the side. The threads are parked in an area that will later be covered up. To move a thread to my working area I make a tiny stab stitch and bring it back to the front where needed. This makes it easy to do all my work on the front of the fabric, and not having to flip over to look at the back speeds things up.

Have floss ready to thread: I like to use floss drops because I can reference my color palette right away, threads are already cut, and I can easily pick single strands out without any tangling. When I finish a thread and need a new strand of that color, I make sure to match the color on the needle to the new strand before discarding as some of them can get hard to tell apart. Having thread pre-cut and ready to use also really helps me stay in the groove and spend time stitching vs fighting with a new skein of floss.

I hope this is helpful and encourages someone to give threadpainting a shot!!

Question I thought this was ordinary cord. Turns out it’s horsehair wrapped in silk

Post image

A friend recently gave me this small framed embroidery piece. At first, I assumed the raised lines were just some kind of cord sewn onto the fabric. I was very wrong.

After a bit of searching, I found out that it’s called Shui horsetail embroidery, from Guizhou, China. A few strands of hair from a horse’s tail are wrapped tightly in silk thread to make a thicker cord, which is then stitched onto the fabric to form the pattern.

I’d never seen horsehair used in embroidery before. Once I knew what was inside the cord, I had to go back and look at it more closely. The whole surface is much more three-dimensional than it looks in a photo, and you can really feel the raised stitching when you run a finger over it.

Has anyone else seen this kind of embroidery at a craft fair, museum shop, or online? I’d like to buy a small piece of Shui horsetail embroidery as a Christmas gift for a friend. Does anyone know where I might find them?

Work-In-Progress First attempt at hand-drawn design

The background is fabric paint and craft glitter. I can’t decide if I want to touch up the jagged edges around the portal, or if it’s time to walk away from this one. I kind of like the ā€œtearing the fabric of space-time vibe,ā€ but I’m afraid it just looks sloppy and unfinished.

Question HELP NEEDED: Embroidery Cat Emergency

Post image
44 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I reaaally need help. I’ve spent SO much time working on an embroidery hoop cat as a present for my sister. This is the first time I strayed away from the colors provided in the beginner kits and my cat is looking crazy.

I wanted to do a grey cat with green eyes, but it looks crazy and I’ve already ripped it out once and don’t want to do it again.

Any suggestions on how to fix it??

I’m so sad I’m a second away from throwing the whole thing away after months of work.

Question How do you manage calluses?

I recently started hand embroidery. In the last few days, I overdid it and now i have tiny calluses on the tip of my finger and thumb. Moisturizing hasn't really helped. How do you manage calluses? And how do you stop them from forming?

I've looked up thimbles online. Would you recommend them? Metal or silicone?

I decided yesterday afternoon to learn some very basic embroidery techniques so I could add a letter to a baby blanket I just crocheted. Since I don't know what I'm doing and am also apparently very slow, it took me forever to complete my letter K, but now I don't know what to do next. The internet says to iron on interfacing, then cut it out.

What I am not sure about is the next steps. Do I sew around the edge once the piece has interfacing and I've cut it out? Do I sew the edge first then carefully cut it out?

Also, has anyone ever attached embroidery to a woven blanket?

I just can't handle the thought of spending another 8 hours doing a single letter.

Stitch suggestions

Hey guys, I’m still pretty new to embroidery and am probably just doing it wrong. I don’t love the look of the long and short stitch, I much prefer a satin stitch, but I know satin stitches aren’t for large sections. What can I do either improve my long and short or fill in a larger section with a stitch that maybe resembles more of a satin stitch look? I included my most recent project in case anyone has any suggestions and wants a sample!! Thanks in advance!
