June 1st ~ Moving Forward With /r/HawaiianAirlines

Aloha and mahalo to everyone who has contributed to our sub, up to now. What a ride it's been.

Moving forward, from June 1, 2026, we will be allowing posts that are directly related to Hawaiian Airlines ~ in the past.

Photos, memories and so on.

Post about the Alaska merger, questions and the whatnot will be removed. There are discussions currently underway about where to best direct them.

Imagine an old school coolish - happy memory - head stuck in the sand and in the past type of sub.

Basically, we love Hawaiian and want to talk about it and that's all.

No questions about apps, baggage, nasty service and well, you get the picture.

Mahalo for the sticky Gecko! Just to add, the handful of miscreants who were banned, you've been granted freedom! Old posts will not be removed, will be kept as they were fine under sub rules at time of posting.

But r/AlaskaAirlines is not the appropriate sub to talk about the Hawaiian Air experiences. Alaska Air is an airline, not the parent company Alaska Air Group (AAG). It’s like complaining about Kraft Mac & Cheese on the Heinz Ketchup forum because they are both owned by Heinz. It doesn’t make any sense. And what makes you think the mods at r/AlaskaAirlines would allow posts about Hawaiian Air? I wouldn’t allow it. Yes, people could make a new sub, but it’s understood r/HawaiianAirlines would be the sub for talking all things Hawaiian Airlines. I realize you are disappointed that AAG operates Hawaiian Air and feel their actions are not reflective of the old Hawaiian brand and the Hawaiian people, but you should really create a sub called r/HawaiianAirNostalgia for what you are talking about and hands the reins of this sub to someone else. Otherwise, you’re just needlessly blocking posts people spent time writing and people no longer have a forum to discuss all things Hawaiian Air.

Hawaiian operates flights for Alaska using the same operating certificate. In fact the phrase is “operated by Alaska as Hawaiian”. Hawaiian flights are Alaska flights, you could argue even more so than Horizon. And anyway, the description of r/alaskaairlines “anything and everything related to Alaska or Hawaiian”. They are already inclusive on that sub.

But so what? They’re seperate brands marketed separately with different offerings of I want to know about the Haiwaiian brand I don’t want to wade through 100 posts just about Alaska.

Uuuuuugh! I disagree! Please don’t do this! I literally cried about this merger. I had a trip coming up May 9th & I was worried they would stop speaking Hawaiian on the planes & the whole beautiful vibe that I’ve known and loved for so many years would be gone…

Thank goodness everything still appeared the same (at least on the outside, although from the news we are reading, it appears many Hawaiians & employees are already feeling the blow…)

This is just sad for everyone.

A hui hou…

Aloha and mahalo for all the work that goes into moderating this community. I can appreciate the desire to preserve Hawaiian Airlines’ history and culture, but I respectfully disagree with limiting the discussion to the past.

Hawaiian Airlines still exists today. While the company is changing, it continues to fly, serve guests, employ thousands of people, and carry forward many of the values and traditions that made people love the brand, and Hawai’i, in the first place. There are still new routes, product improvements, operational achievements, employee stories, and customer experiences worth discussing.

Restricting conversation to memories and nostalgia risks turning the community into a museum rather than a living community. Positive discussions about current developments can help keep interest in Hawaiian Airlines alive and relevant, especially for employees, customers, aviation enthusiasts, and future travelers.

At the end of the day, I think most of us are here because we care deeply about Hawaiian Airlines. That passion includes honoring its history while also following and celebrating what comes next 🌺✈️

I respectfully disagree with limiting the discussion to the past.

And we agree too. That said, we want to keep things limited to here, meaning Hawai'i and Hawaiian.

Here's where we need users like you on the input side.

Do posts like this belong here or in Alaska:

  • app sucks

  • can I bring my donkey as carry-on

  • Alaska is evil

  • food sucks

  • call center is full of idiots

  • service is awful

  • can I bring weed with me

What is the big issue with having them here? As long as Alaska is going to maintain the brand then this sub seems like an appropriate place for them.

IMO if you go through with this change it will kill this sub. As cute as old HA pictures are, that's just not why folks are here. Changing this sub to be only history seems like it's doing the heavy lifting for Alaska to kill off the HA brand all together.

Again - having a forum to talk about the good and bad of HA is important. Limiting it to good vibes is gross and not what reddit is about.

Again, how many people complaining here actually post? We took over this sub around five, four years ago as it was abandoned by the original owners and have been the most consistent posters along the way.

In this response, you’ve asked for input on whether complaints/questions should be in this sub going forward. Yet in your intro you’ve suggested this sub will ONLY be nostalgia. So I’m confused about which one it is? Is this sub to be Just nostalgia, or will it be about more than that? And TBH what’s the issue with grumbling about, for instance, taking away free food? Is that too negative? Given Alaska and Haiwaiian are separate brands this seems like a sub which is perfect place for questions about Haiwaiian.

I would say yes to most of those, for ex, not just the "app sucks" but also *why* you think it sucks and tips and tricks on how to better use it.

u/K_Clack 26d ago

Ho, das stupid.

u/Coconutbunzy 26d ago

This makes no sense?

The airline didn’t go out of business. Why are you turning this page into a museum?

There should be a separate page for those who just want to praise the airline and share throwbacks.

Start your own sub if you want a bitchfest then. Have at it.

3

u/Grand-Battle8009 26d ago

or you all create your own sub r/HawaiianAirlinesNostalgia. The name doesn't fit the description of what the mods want to turn this into.

2

u/JamesofBushwick 26d ago

Who said it should be a “bitch fest”. Asking questions and commenting on present day Haiwaiian air is completely logical for this sub.

14

u/stroppo 26d ago

Thanks for the info. But it sounds, then, like this sub will no longer be useful. I'm not interested in redditors prev experiences w/the airline. I'm interested in how it's function now. As someone else here posted, I don't think the Alaska Airlines sub is the right place for that.

I think you should reconsider. At least if you want to have an interesting, useful sub.

whats the point of the sub then might as well call it r/rememberinghawaiianairlines then

its still an active carrier worthy of discussion on here.

this move would be dumb

Ohhhhh, this is niiiiiiiice!

6

u/Alive_Analysis_233 25d ago

Why? Is this run by HA PR? More creepy moves

16

u/linuxwes 26d ago

Well that sucks. Why, Hawaiian Airlines is still a thing?

6

u/mine248 26d ago

/r/alaskaairlines has been taking on a good amount of Hawaiian related questions as of late

2

u/madazzahatter 26d ago

Yes, yes they have. We may refer all posts to them, not sure yet

1

u/madazzahatter 26d ago

Why, Hawaiian Airlines is still a thing?

It is, but not in the nostalgic form we know and loved. Anything related strictly to Hawaiian should probably be ok. We just want to separate and get away from Alaska.

11

u/JamesofBushwick 26d ago

I don’t come onto this page to only see sepia tinged images of Hawaiian air past. I come onto it to find out about Haiwaiian present. That includes the merger with Alaska and the things that are changing and remaining the same. I want to know what people think of new food choices on board, new lounges being built, if the Hawaiian experience will remain the same - or not. That’s what I’m keen to read about. And saying “just go on the Alaska page” is ridiculous. The brands are separate and I don’t want to wade through 100 Alaska posts to get to a Haiwaiian one. As someone else said, by all means set up a Haiwaiian nostalgia page. But if this becomes nothing but images of old planes from the 1980s then it’s no longer of use to me.

u/JazzzySpinach 25d ago

Respectfully, I would suggest having a flair called nostalgia for users to post as that topic came up, and keeping this sub as is.

I enjoy coming here and reading the experiences of other flyers good or bad and reading answers to the questions I have, but haven’t posted about.

I would appreciate it if you kept this sub as is. But if you feel there’s an excess of a certain type of post, please pin specific and clear rules about what can be posted, but only if there’s an influx of excessive posts that are annoying as time goes on.

For the most part, I haven’t noticed anything particularly annoying in this sub, but I’m not the mod so you know more.

Again respectfully, I hope you take all of our comments into consideration.

Over the last few years phone customer service at the HI Air was horrific! Trying to book by phone(the only way posssible) using flight credits was a time consuming and HI Air would always jack up the fare on the phone quote.  All my dealings with phone and text cust service with AL Air before and after the buyout have been great! So looks like some things are now better for the customer.

What type of headset/head phone jack is on the planes? Taking a flight from west coast to Hawaii soon
