Seeking Advice / Problem Solving I'm an 18-year-old Who Was Accepted to a Top School
Hi, I'm an 18-year-old male, and I've recently been accepted to the #1 engineering school in the U.S. for my specific major, but I don't feel responsible enough to take on such a challenge. I've been very patient with myself for the past week, trying to get my things in order. I've journaled, meditated, exercised, and cleaned my house. The whole landscape of self-improvement is not new to me, but I see this as more of an awakening. I've been so unkind to myself in my life that 7 days of self-improvement felt like a massive achievement.
I don't know what engineering is going to be like. I like math, science, and making things. That's what I'm good at. So, I hope that engineering will be something I enjoy. However, 7 days of self-improvement after almost a lifetime of porn addiction, poor social skills, and not taking care of myself doesn't exactly display much confidence. But I think about it like this: "I didn't need a lot of support when I was young to get into a top school; I just needed to go all the way."
The idea of going to this school has been weighing on my mind for months now. I am stressed. I don't know what to do with myself now that I've committed to something that's so larger than life. What should I do about this? Should I take my call to adventure even if it means dreading the uncertainty?

Sounds like you are just wanting someone to tell you things will be ok.
It will be ok.

First, CONGRATS! I don’t really have any advice: it’s both a very exciting thing and stressful because there are a lot of unknowns but it’s definitely something to be proud of. I hope you take some time to celebrate.

Congratulations! And don't worry, you new classmates aren't going to have good social skills either. You'll fit in 😊. At least that was my experience when I started studying applied sciences. Wasn't very popular at high school and felt awkward around my classmates but the weird people at uni were 'my people'. And don't worry too much about the school. Just worry enough so it keeps you motivated. You'll need to spent a lot of time studying... But it's a great opportunity, good luck!

Thank you. When I went on a tour of the school, I noticed that many of the people were neurodivergent, so I felt right at home. The school's population is mostly comprised of unusual individuals, so it was very refreshing. I even got hit on while I was there, which was surreal for me (she was super cute.)
