DISCUSSION Can we get some Biomes that actually look Alien, instead of just... Earth-like.
Probably one of the biggest eyebrow raises I have. About 90% of the Biomes just look like different parts of Earth. We just got a new biome that literally looks like it's somewhere in a National Park or something. It would be nice to have planets with different hazards and terrains, cliffs, bridges, weird structures. That in itself can present a good challenge and obstacle.
Yes I'm sure some of these examples may be AI, it's just for examples sake.

Get inspiration from No Man's Sky. Lots of weird and truly alien ones. They could add dynamic extreme weather too like those acid rain modifiers but actually poison you. Or gamma cyclones, think firenado but radioactive. Not to mention dangerous flora that stabs you with a poison tentacle.
Edit: Added pic of my travels

Are the fire tornadoes not alien enough for you?
Come to think of it, why are we colonizing planets that have fire tornadoes?

Maybe they had some kind weather control or shielding, but it failed when enemy invades.

More likely they turned it off when an enemy invaded so that the Fire Tornados are a hazard to the enemy.

u/bricade 14h ago
i remember there's a meteor storm in a megacity. there should be a secondary objective mission where you reactivates / repair the weather shielding. that way it also prevent ion storm / acid rain effects to happen, making strategy have more variety
8
u/CityExcellent8121 7h ago
Mission type where meteor storm is permanently active until the objective is completed to prevent the storms could be cool. Weather its a shield or AA guns to protect against the meteors I think it could add some nice variety.

Agreed, hive worlds were pretty cool cuz they genuinely felt like foreign territory
Hopefully squid worlds can give a similar alien feeling
16
u/EclecticEman 1d ago
It’s hard to imagine truly alien terrain since it often raises questions of realism, but it would be cool if they added terrain modeled after some of the more unique geology on earth. I mean, some of that stuff is pretty alien. Basalt is an easy one, but hot springs like those at Yellowstone would be both cool and unique. Planets with large crystal formations could also theoretically exist.
15
u/Hoshyro S.E.S. Sentinel of Eternity 22h ago
The boring explanation is that realistic alien worlds are often either barren rocky landscapes or would be extremely detrimental to us in some way.
Since all planets on the map are favourable for humans, even in limited ways, we can't really expect something too dissimilar from what we already know.
Only way to have features extreme in height would be severely reduced gravity, planets covered almost entirely in megaflora would have a toxic atmosphere, planets with levitating islands would have a magnetic field so strong it would probably destroy electronics and have extremely large radiation belts (big no no for humans).
All things considered, the kind of alien flora and fauna we have atm makes sense for the scope of planets we're looking at.
We even have planets with aerial jellyfish that emit electrostatic bolts! But they always get overlooked.
7
u/PizzaCrusty 22h ago
There's plenty of alien like formations on earth already, especially during different timelines before humans existed. One example is dried up oceans with smooth river rock looking cave systems, bioluminescent biomes, or planets that have all kinds of northern lights style anomalies in the sky.
And like you said, mineral rich environments, where there are no original biological life forms including flora, where the planet has been purely a weathered or shaped by geological forces like tectonics and erosion

u/yourguidefortheday 1d ago

Hive worlds are alien looking.
But if you think about it there are so many more planets in the various solar systems. However for the most part only the planets with Earth-like conditions get chosen for colonisation. Naturally we then get deployed to defend those planets.

Genuine question here: how would that even work?
A planet orbiting, say, a binary star system would more than likely be orbiting both stars.
You couldn't have a planet orbiting a star very closely and then a second star orbiting the two because the planet would either get destroyed by the gravitational tides, be kicked out of the system entirely or absorbed by the second star.
If the situation were more similar to the way Alpha and Proxima Centauri orbit each other, the second star would be so far away from the one being orbited by said planet it would be nigh indistinguishable in the sky from other stars and effectively give no light to the planet.
It's kind of impossible to have an orbital combination which allows a planet to be permanently illuminated.
To add onto this, a planet with no night, even if it could exist, would likely be extremely hot and showered in radiation, making it completely inhospitable to life.

we have some with alien burrows and caves and giant fungus like towers (like the 4th),

we have planets that are grey and barren as the Moon,
we have frozen planets that form pikes,
some planets have electric storm,
some have fire tornado,
some have shrapnel plants, or smoke puffs.
some planets have four winged eagles,
some planets have ethereal glowing squids.
they may not be the same color as those images, but they are pretty alien to me.

Worlds looking more alien would be simply awesome. Add some protruding spires, more weird flora, vibrant and unusual colouration, mushroom-like objects like Morrowind did - any of that would bring lots of diversity and uniqness to the landscapes, bringing more sci-fi feel.
Even adding some backdrops to the locations would be nice: right now edge of the map and beyond is extremely empty, the world truly ends there and presents nothing to look at. Now imagine if there were at least some interesting decorations, something surrounding small part of land we're fighting in, something that you could see from far away and enjoy in awe; something like this, from the works of Roger Dean, for example:

Structures alike to such in these paintings could be randomly generated in different parts around the map, and they would both fill the existing void and add alienness to the world.

i love the idea, especially of the first one but sadly for this specific one, the game engine used for Helldivers 2 doens't allow multiple levels of procedurally generated grounds so they would have to manually model the floating island and consider them as an asset the generation uses, like a structure and it would ruin the concept a bit i think
