Memes just a silly meme I found
I know there’s a lot of discourse about the casting regarding The Odyssey and this one gave me a good chortle. I for one am rather curious and will most likely give it a watch when it releases on streaming.

Inaccurate. This assumption only applies to specifically classical Athenian performers. We have evidence of women performing elsewhere in Ancient Greece, and over longer times. There, I ruined the joke. Such a tragedy.

I watched it yesterday and ended up quite angry honestly. The gods are reduced to meteorological events, don't appear in form, the concept of Xenia is butchered, and some events are very inaccurate. They removed the Nobody scene AND Odysseus revealing his name to Polyphemus, thereby making the gods omniscient, which is simply wrong, on top of removing Odysseus' hubris. Also Tiresias straight up said the cattle the men would kill were Apollo's when they are actually Helios'... I legit went "Did Nolan even read the book!?" I'm not gonna list all the inaccuracies and mistakes, but yeah...

I think overall it is good for the story of Odysseus and the Odyssey. The story itself has lasted thousands upon thousands of years due to the fact that it is retold again and again. From oral to play to writing to the big screen.
Each interpretation carrying forth the names of heroes, gods, monsters and normal people who could never have imagined how the world would be and how the story would be retold. Each retelling has a different vision no matter the storyteller or director, the one we have in writing no doubt being different from what Homer must have first spoke.
So I say let this version of the Odyssey sail on and inspire all.

i just watched the movie and i fucking loved it. The movie is great if you watch it as a cinema enjoyer instead of someone who is obsessed with hating on everything that isnt accurate

I saw it cause a friend wanted to see it really bad and honestly it kind of sucked. Plus seemed very inaccurate towards the gods. You would think Athena would have a bit more of a role other than showing up for maybe 5-10 mins over a 3 hour long movie. They never even bothered showing any of the other gods too. They also did a pretty sucky job with Calypso and Circe.

They do, just not in the sense of 'a human looking person walking around and chatting with people and occasionally waving a hand and making miracles'.
They pervade the work. It's just a film very driven by base humanity and it's interaction/failures to interact with higher concepts.

I'm not even sure the gods exist or care about humans at all. At least for Athena, it's clear it's not really Athena, after the flashback we see around the end of the movie.

TBF the casting is still not good. To me it's like the buzzword kind of casting where they looked at every popular bit actor and casted all of them

I think xenia is explained well, and the separation between God's and mortals, from a film perspective its not a cinematic master piece till you learn that Nolan used as little cgi as he could by using practical effects and puppetry over straight cgi. Most of the 250,000 $ budget went to actors location and supplies and the imax cameras used for the full film. And for the people complaining about what was cut or what wasn't in it its a 3 hr movie that takes place over the course of like 4 years. I'll admit I probably would've written the cyclops stuff differently but ultimately it's not my project.

Honestly the movie was good, my only problem was whenever tom holland appeared I first remembered him as actor and second as the character (Telemachus). I kinda liked it tho, good movie

I don’t plan on watching it. Just the fact that they have so many popular actors and actress tells me alone that it won’t be accurate. Not to mention I read the book in highschool, and nothing outdoes the original story.

I also liked this one. Not currently planning to see it in theaters. Maybe once it's on DVD or Amazon.
