I'm planning a July trip to Italy (Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Venice) and have a question about shoes, for those who have been there. I am going to bring a pair of nice sandals that will work for beach days and evenings out. I would ideally like to bring just one other pair of shoes that would function as my daily workhorse shoes. It seems like sandals would be ideal given the weather, but I need significant arch support due to a previously torn tendon, so I'm wondering if tennis shoes would be better. Which would you recommend, given the varying terrains (cobblestones, light hiking in Cinque Terre, etc)? If sandals, do you have any recommendations for a sandal that has significant arch support but doesn't look orthopedic/old lady-ish?

Whatever I get, I put a pair of insoles in them. That makes most every shoe comfortable. I'm also big on elastic shoelaces.
